towing question

From : cliffton

Q: hi i have to move two of my trucks to another location about 500 miles away. i was thinking of pulling the f150 sport backwards behind the dodge one ton by making some sort of hitch that would lift the back wheels off the ground. does anyone have any thoughts on this or any advice thanks cliffton .

a better plan and less likely to cause troubles would be to rent a flatbed trailer from u-haul and tow the ford on it. or pull the front wheels onto a tow dolly from u-haul drop the driveshaft from the differential secure it to the frame or exhaust pipe and truck on down the road. leave the driveshaft in the transmission and you wont leak much fluid. the steering lock is not designed to hold the steering while being towed. ropes used to tie the steering wheels can slip. i witnessed this happen to a friends 50 chevy that a neighbor had given him. budd hi i have to move two of my trucks to another location about 500 miles away. i was thinking of pulling the f150 sport backwards behind the dodge one ton by making some sort of hitch that would lift the back wheels off the ground. does anyone have any thoughts on this or any advice thanks cliffton .

does anyone have any thoughts on this or any advice yeah - dont do it. thats far too much tongue weight for even a class v hitch - not to mention about 5000 lbs. of trailer with no brakes. spend the money and rent the tow dolly or the flatbed. its what theyre meant for and its the safest way to go. not to mention the legalities of towing a vehicle backwards down the highway. you can get away with that if is being towed by an emergency vehicle but not by a private vehicle. denny .

the last time it happened was during a ohio ice storm . . . . nasty! budd not to mention the legalities of towing a vehicle backwards down the highway. dont like staring at the front grill of a big truck for 300 miles denny .

From : budd cochran

why put the back end on the dolly where the overhang can easily cause damage on turns to the tow vehicle when he can put the front end on just as easily dropping the driveshaft is much easier. budd you can put the rear axle on the tow dolly unlock the ignition steering run the seat belt through the steering wheel and go. the direction the vehicle is facing is of no consequence. the tow dolly will have the proper tail lights on it. -- steve ========= ok thanks i guess that answers that question. cliffton .
