how much work is involved in swapping out the 258 from my 84 dodge and installing a 318 it would be a 225 and if you have an at you can swap it out fairly easily. or is it even worth it well it would be easier to just buy a truck with the 318 in it. you will need a 318 and trans since the 225 trans will not bolt to the 318. engine mounts will be different but the trans will bolt in. all the wiring will work but some of the connectors will be different or you may need to lengthen certain parts of the harness. this is just the tip of all the debugging you will need to do. the point is its up to you if its worth it. max anvils dont kill cartoon characters cartoon characters kill cartoon characters. .

how much work is involved in swapping out the 258 from my 84 dodge and installing a 318 a lot! you will need to change pretty much everything from the exhaust to the fuel lines. even the battery cables may need to be replaced! its a lot of work and more importantly cost. the one saving caveat is if you can find a similar truck in the bone yard with the 318 in it to use as a parts vehicle. not only will you not have to build or scavenge parts youll also be able to see how the v-8 was set up from the factory and that will save a ton of headaches! or is it even worth it thats kind of a personal call depending on what you want to do with the truck but imho the answer is no. im guessing since you are talking about swapping a 318 youre not looking to take it racing. while both engines are solid the 318 is pretty disappointing in overall performance. that old slant-6 pumps out a lot of torque for its size and should get pretty decent mileage when kept tuned. if its dead or dying the first thing i would do is get estimates on either rebuilding or replacing it. if theres a reason to justify the v-8 swap or you just want to do it i would recommend going with the 360 engine. the work will be the same but the end result will be better. if you are going to take it racing the 360 is a much better starting point too. john v .

yeah red theres no replacement for displacement... but give the /6 engines a *little* more credit! i have a lot of respect for /6 engines when i worked for the phone company we had a 65 a108... /6 three on the tree. it had a habit of getting stuck in high gear and i didnt know about worn shift linkage bushings at the time. the first time it got stuck in high on me i had to accelerate around a left-hand corner and up rose hill redmond wa. even loaded down w/ equipment it still made it up the hill. later a buddy had a 66 a100... /6 three on the tree. it hauled my broken ragtop on the racecars trailer over 5000# back from bremerton raceway by way of the steep hills to the ferry terminal. mostly that was not a good day at all... but that little 225 saved our bacon! another buddy had an aspen w/ a /6 tf904. steve was notorious for neglecting his cars and rat-beating them everywhere he went. after arriving at his place one evening a 15 mile drive for steve at wot up/down hills he popped the hood and the darned exhaust manifold was glowing bright red! that engine still lasted a good-long time. shawn if you want to go thru w/ the swap you might just as well go w/ a 360... 42 more cubes... longer stroke... more torque... and theyre almost as cheap as a 318. an alternative would be to modify your /6. clifford performance http//www.cliffordperformance.com/ as well as mopar performance are good places to look for parts. bryan im guessing since you are talking about swapping a 318 youre not looking to take it racing. while both engines are solid the 318 is pretty disappointing in overall performance. you actually believe your load of bs that old slant-6 pumps out a lot of torque for its size and should get pretty decent mileage when kept tuned. yeah sure whatever you say. the /6 must put out about 200 lbs ft of torque at 1800-2000 rpm so if you have want to travel 45-50 mph be my guest maybe he actually wants to use his truck for something besides driving around to the original poster-if you like the truck its in good shape and you think it will make you look good in your red dress then just do it. i had a 69 gmc with a 292 six in it once upon a time i put a 454 in it and never looked back the six got 12 mpg and the 454 13 mpg if this poster likes the sixes so much sell it to him. .

sounds like you are in the market for another one then just speak up i knew a guy who hauled his 66 fairlane to bakersfield with his 302 1/2 ton ford pickup. i wouldnt have hauled a car across the street on his trailer let long towed it with that truck. one of them home made jobs with ramps made from old service station ramps 50 miles an hour swaying all the way. one time one of the tires from the trailer passed him. another friend of mine said jeff asked him if he could convoy with us. i told him sure as long as he understands we haul about 70-75 mph pretty much ended that you want to tow at 30 mph good. i like to get where i am going and back without whiteknuckles . but give the /6 engines a *little* more credit! i have a lot of respect for /6 engines didnt say they werent a good engine a 292 chevy or a 300 ford are too. and 230/250 chevys are great. ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .
