screw driver and pliers was all i used to change the rear breaks on my 96. hardest part of the whole job was getting the drums off. even with the brakes backed off the drums didnt want to come off. used a chunk of 1 1/4 aluminum round shaft about 12 long and a 2lb hammer working around the back side of the drum was able to finally persuade them off. i know they make a special puller just for brake drums but i didnt have one. if you have to beat on your drums use a soft lead brass ect. hammer or punch. gary i am getting ready to change my rear brakes on my 95 ram 1500. i was telling a neighbor and he told me that i needed special tools i have not changed rear brakes in a long time and never needed anything more than a screwdriver and pliers to change them before bypassing the special break tools... can i still do it the old way or do i need theses tools thankyou jc .

jc special brake tools can i still do it the old way or do i need theses tools a picture or two with a digital camera would be helpful to me. saves any mixup between the sides. and a spray can of brake cleaner is always in order. bob az .

i just did the rears on my 96 ram 1500 2wd. if you want to get the job done in the easiest way posible get the tools. btw i just did the first rear brake job in 90k miles and the shoes still had plenty of life left. only changed them because its been 8 years and 90k miles. if you have done the brakes once b4 you just might need an adjustment now chris i am getting ready to change my rear brakes on my 95 ram 1500. i was telling a neighbor and he told me that i needed special tools i have not changed rear brakes in a long time and never needed anything more than a screwdriver and pliers to change them before bypassing the special break tools... can i still do it the old way or do i need theses tools thankyou jc .

as with everything the special tools make the job easier but you can certainly do the job with regular tools just be prepared to spend more time doing the job. i can send pics of the sides but it might take some time to get to do it as i do not have much time anymore chris 96 ram cc sb 5.9l can i still do it the old way or do i need theses tools a picture or two with a digital camera would be helpful to me. saves any mixup between the sides. and a spray can of brake cleaner is always in order. bob az .

or do it the old fashion way and only take apart one side at a time. you still have the other side for reference. as with everything the special tools make the job easier but you can certainly do the job with regular tools just be prepared to spend more time doing the job. i can send pics of the sides but it might take some time to get to do it as i do not have much time anymore chris 96 ram cc sb 5.9l can i still do it the old way or do i need theses tools a picture or two with a digital camera would be helpful to me. saves any mixup between the sides. and a spray can of brake cleaner is always in order. bob az .
