Q: 1999 dodge ram about 55000 miles 5.9l engine. today was a cold morning about 5f. i drove to the train station and was parking my pickup. engine was warm by this time. i backed out of the parking spot a bit and then put my truck in forward at which point the engine stopped. i was able to turn the key off and restart it instantly so no big trouble. i would like to know what may cause this behavior. thanks i .

thanks for the info. it has 90 thousand miles and never change the fuel filter. but doesnt seem to have problems unless its cold. probably a precaution to change it eh thanks! yep good idea. its gonna be more of a problem when its cold. the fuel is gonna wax more when its cold especially the older the filter is. youve been incredibly lucky. your fuel economy will probably get a little better also. have a great week tom heintz mopar maniac .

greetings group i just had a webasto blue heat diesel fired heater installed on my 02 dodge cummins 2500 pick up last week. it puts out 17000 btus which does a nice job warming the engine and cab. the past 2 winters when down around 20 below the truck started hard and took quite a while to warm up. so far the coldest it has been is 10 above and am not sure what itll do when really frigid but impressed with it so far. a defrosted windshield warm cab quick easy starts with wait to start light out within a couple seconds and able to run the heater with engine running makes for a pretty comfortable cold weather package. the fuel line travels inside the frame rail and is tapped into the vent line of the fuel tank. it gets its power from the vehicle batteries which makes it a totally self-sufficient system. heater fan set on low and cab heat knob set to defrost itll turn the blower on when it fires. a three-event timer is installed with mine which has to be set for each use only one event to a time and i set it to run for an hour. now so long as the fuel doesnt gel.... o i thought id share this with the group as there were discussions on heaters in past posts. calf... ps. wife is almost a bit jealous as she is still scraping and brushing .

i have a 2003 sprinter with the mercedes diesel engine. last winter im in minnesotai had no problems with gelled fuel. this year its in the shop today for the third time to be warmed and started. i blamed the first two times on bad blended fuel but this time i dont get it. i put in power service emergency anti gel topped off the fuel tank with a grade of diesel that claims its good to 36 below it was 20 below today. it was cold over the weekend 15 below and the truck started and ran fine until today monday. any suggestions out there anybody believe in-line heaters if the fuel filter works ok in normal temps does that mean it doesnt need replacing i mean would a fuel filter be the problem even if it works ok in temps above cloud point any input would be appreciated. thanks! how many miles do you have on it. has the fuel filter been replaced & if so how many miles ago. little personal experience i had years ago. 85 f-250 diesel had about 11000 miles on the filter. i was driving home one night and the truck started losing power. i had a spare fuel filter in the truck that i installed after the truck died on the side of the road. it started right up & ran great after that. i havent had a problem since i started changing the filter every 10000 miles. in-line fuel heaters work well in my experience. we had them on the line trucks where i used to work. they worked quite well. i would bet that there is a factory set up for you. best of luck tom heintz mopar maniac .

the sound pretty much stays the same during the shift. slight change when it goes to a lower rmp right after the shift but not a noticable change. already did the over fill trick on the fluid and that did nothing. all mounts are good. still havent found what it is. but thanks transurgeon wrote does it raise in pitch then drop and repeat as the unit shifts in other words is it related to engine speed if so id say pump or perhaps the converter thrust bearings especially since it stops in n you might try overfilling it a quart or so in case its sucking air between filter and valve body or valve body-to-case even 2 quarts over full will not be a problem if its not engine-related it may be a collapsed rear mount grounding the case to the frame and transmitting noise even a cooler line against a metal body part will make noise like that transmission suddenly started to make whining or howling noise. its a 97 dakota 4x4 about 90k miles automatic and the noise changes pitch in sync with the speed of the truck. meaning a very light noise when at a stop while in drive and once i take off and pick up speed the noise increases bases on the speed i am traveling with the pitch getting high the higher the speed. i brake to come to a stop and the noise whines down in sync with the speed of the truck slowing down. the noise is very noticeable and loud. the faster i go the higher the pitch. transmission oil and filters have been changes as recommended and last done about 5000 miles ago. the oil level is good of course and smells normal no burnt smells or anything like that and has good color. the transmission is still very strong pulls hard still just as powerful as new even while towing. no problem with its performance at all other then the noise that just recently started when in drive. the noise has not gotten any worse in time so far and sounds and performs the same when cold or hot. when the transmission is shifted to neutral the noise goes away totally so its only while it is in gear both forward and reverse you hear it. i can be traveling down the road at certain speed and rpm and while maintaining my foot on the pedal not change the rpm or speed shift it to neutral for however long a time and noise disappears. put it back in drive 2nd or 1st the noise comes back. i have worked with hydraulic before and the sound is similar to a hydraulic pump whine or even like a power steering pump low on oil or something for the record its not the power steering pump i have checked this out. it is not the engine tires or power steering and this is based on the test with the noise going away when shifting to neutral while maintaining an rpm and speed on the same road surface. any ideas please post. thanks for looking. .

1999 dodge ram 1500 quad cab sigh what color! open up the sunglasses holder and youll see two clips. squeeze these clips and the back of the console will pull down. then slide the whole console towards the back of the truck until it disengages. you can then disconnect the wiring and remove it. .

cycling the preheaters will put a drain on the batteries but thats just one reason why we have 2 of them.... for the drain it causes its well worth doing gets rid most of the white smoke and really helps them start faster.. i have guys starting 1980s chev diesels at -30 which is damn near the same in fahrenheit as in celsius. we have had fewer trucks not start since they started following this procedure m. its been getting cold here in kc so i plugged in the block keater last night. i went out to start up the truck this afternoon and two things caught my attention. the first was how quickly the wait to start indicator turned off it was only 3-4 seconds. in the past several weeks where its been cool mid-low 30s i havent used the block heater and the wait time was a lot longer upwards of 10+ seconds if i recall correctly. pretty impressive.... .
