if it is a carrier bearing then you do not need to and should not mess with the pinion unless there is damage that requires its replacement. setting the carrier is easy compared to getting the pinion right and if the bad carrier bearing did not cause significant damage to the gears to cause their replacement messing with the pinion does nothing more than increase your chances of screwing up the rear. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving hi it sounds like a wheel bearing. there is no side pressure on your carrier bearings. if you decide to take it apart you should have a good torque wrench to 250 lb. for the pinion nut and a good in lbs torque wrench for the preload. it sould be around 14-35 in lbs of resistence at the pinion/yoke nut. you may also have a collapsible pinion bearing spacer that should be replaced at every loosening or replacement. i know this sounds stupid but a bad or weak rim can cause noise also. down the axle tubes is the access to your ring gear/carrier bearings. the adjustments on the bearings dictate if the lash is correct for the gears. i welded on a nut to both sides to a steel tube about 4 long that fit the adjuster so that i could put a wrench and torque wrench to set preload. i think it should have about .015 at the ring/pinion gap at the tightest spot. try to move your yoke back and forth to check for any movement. there should not be any. there should also be some resistance when turning. your specs should have every thing you need to know. let me know if i can help. good luck. ps use blue locktight for the pinion nut. you should have plenty of time to adjust before the locktight dries. jessie dick wrote i replaced all the bearings in my dakota axle 2 years ago now its making some noise again mostly on a right turn. i suspect the left carrier bearing any thoughts i didnt have a adjusting. spanner or other tool or torsion bar to adj. preload properly when i did it before. what year torsion bar will fit the adjusting nut through the axle tube its a 97 8 1/4 29 spline with posi. dick .

down the road. with that in mind im thinking about getting the tekumsha prodigy controller. last i saw it cost about 175.00 and will prolly then youd be overpaying by about fifty bucks... $124.95 with the plug-in harness and free shipping http//www.brakecontroller.com/ pros-n-cons none to speak of... lots of guys myself included use it and it works great. maybe the only knock you could give it is that it is an inertial controller whereas the brakesmart senses actual brake hydraulic pressure. but at the same time the hardest part of installing the prodigy is deciding where to mount it. .

its the same for my 2002 4.7l dakota. it was the same for my 1994 318cid dakota. the 3k mile is b.s. used to sell more service. jam over half a million miles with mopars my former mechanic who was also a good friend he died a couple of years ago had me on a 4k schedule. 3 oil/filter changes--then time for the 15k or 30k service. ive been using this schedule for over 30 years and have put 150k miles on several vehicles. i just bought a 2000 dodge ram 1500 with 43k miles on it--my first full-sized pickup former ford ranger owner. ill start the service cycle at 45k and drive on from there. since i commute by train my annual mileage is only about 6000-7000. so i plan on having this truck for a long time. mark those who live by the sword get shot by those who dont .

try a different gas station. you may be getting contaminated fuel. steve i have a 2002 dodge durango with low mileage around 23000+; dont remember exactly. last week i was going out and the car stalled just around the block from my house. i came to a corner the engine was idling a bit rough so i gave it some gas and then it just died. it took me about 5 minutes before i got it restarted. i immediately brought it home and took it to my dealer the next day. this had happened one time before about a month and a half prior on an extremely cold day probably in low 20s. the 2nd time it happened i had just filled the tank the day before and it was quite as cold maybe upper 40s. the dealer wasnt able to find anything wrong but they did reset the codes. my father suggested i put some dry gas into the tank to combat any possible moisture in there. since it is a fairly new car with not many miles im hesitant to put anything but gas into the tank. i dont know anything about dry gas but what are other peoples recommendations/experiences with it can it hurt my car to put it in thanks. .
