as much as ive enjoyed my 97 ram and use now as a work truck on a daily basis sometimes working on it can be a bit of a pain. changed the waterpump yesterday. first lesson i learned was that the fan shroud does not come off first. you must remove clutch fan assembly then pull the shroud and fan out at same time. a lousy 1/2 difference in shroud width and this would not be the case. as for the clutch fan..what a fricken pain in the ass. using special tools .... an adjustable wrench and crow bar i successfully removed it allowing access to pump. pump came off easily and replacement was quick cept for one little glitch. the heater hose going to pump secures to a tube that is pressed into pump. this tube does not come with new pump and attempting to reuse the old one didnt work since it did not come out in one piece from old pump. just glad advance auto was open till eleven last night. i just have to question some of the engineering that goes into designing the layout of the truck ....ie last project was changing distributor cap and rotor by feel since it is placed in a spot that had to be intentionally designed to make it inaccessable or at least as aggrevating as possible. with 100k on vehicle i took opportunity to change belt and thermostat at same time along with hoses. now i am wondering if i should have also done timing chain since i spent a fricken day doing a lousy water pump i do not even want to think about getting in there again anytime soon. .

help! this has been going on about a month now. about 15 minutes into my 30 minute drive to and from work my truck will shudder or lurch like it momentarily loses power. it feels like running over a speed bump on the highway. this may happen 2 or 3 times before getting to where im going. i dont think im losing total electrical power because there is no break in the radio or ac. this also happens with the radio and ac off... also about a couple times each week when i come to a stop the truck will just die. starts right back up with no problem... there are no check engine lights. i took it to the shop and they ran a diagnostic with no results and told me to take it to dodge. dodge did a diagnostic with no results. so they started playing the guessing game which has cost me $313.00 so far. here is what they did 1 change spark plugs 2 change pvc valve 3 bg major fuel induction system service with injector kit and throttle body gasket nothing has changed!!! question can an electrical fuel pump gradually go on the fritz dumb question i know and/or after driving for a while can the motion of the truck shake up any crap in the fuel filter and clog it up enough to cause the above problems dodge wants $700.00 to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump and filter. cant afford this to be another guess... any guidance would be appreciated. thanks pcb .

thanks to your and others advice i went with the automatic again. cool. whens the tranny temp gauge going in will i need to worry about it so long as the truck is stock .....now i hear a banks upgrade calling. - if you want to spend more money than you need to for less power than you should get then yeah.... ok. i was thinking about the banks torque converter. the edge juice/attitude is a nice box for someone looking for decent but safe power agreed. however i keep hearing from some of my buddys all power stroke owners about an issue with the cummins both modified and stock burning up #3 cylinder. anything to it but let the engine break in first will ya lol....as i understand it the cummins takes about 12000 miles to fully break in. thats a long wait tom. - -- nathan w. collier http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com .

nice! which transmission thanks to your and others advice i went with the automatic again. funny thing i had absolutely no intention of buying a new truck yesterday. i called the salesman who sold me the 04.5 and told him that as soon as i could sell my jeep and 01 cummins that i wanted him to find me a low mileage fully dressed 02 dually. he told me he would take both off my hands if id take an 05 off his hands. i didnt think he could put a deal together that i could live with but he did it. ......now i hear a banks upgrade calling. - -- nathan w. collier http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com .

rick your history is a bit off. actually diesel was employed by the krupp family to develope an engine to run on coal dust. this of course was a failure and he was fired but the diesel engine was born from that effort. the krupp family was heavily invested in coal at the time. steve rudolf diesel was born in paris in 1858. his parents were bavarian immigrants. rudolf diesel was educated at munich polytechnic. after graduation he was employed as a refrigerator engineer. however he true love lay in engine design. rudolf diesel designed many heat engines including a solar-powered air engine. in 1893 he published a paper describing an engine with combustion within a cylinder the internal combustion engine. in 1894 he filed for a patent for his new invention dubbed the diesel engine. rudolf diesel was almost killed by his engine when it exploded. however his engine was the first that proved that fuel could be ignited without a spark. he operated his first successful engine in 1897. in 1898 rudolf diesel was granted patent #608845 for an internal combustion engine the diesel engine. the diesel engines of today are refined and improved versions of rudolf diesels original concept. they are often used in submarines ships locomotives and large trucks and in electric generating plants. though best known for his invention of the pressure-ignited heat engine that bears his name rudolf diesel was also a well-respected thermal engineer and a social theorist. rudolf diesels inventions have three points in common they relate to heat transference by natural physical processes or laws; they involve markedly creative mechanical design; and they were initially motivated by the inventors concept of sociological needs. rudolf diesel originally conceived the diesel engine to enable independent craftsmen and artisans to compete with large industry. at augsburg on august 10 1893 rudolf diesels prime model a single 10-foot iron cylinder with a flywheel at its base ran on its own power for the first time. rudolf diesel spent two more years making improvements and in 1896 demonstrated another model with the theoretical efficiency of 75 percent in contrast to the ten percent efficiency of the steam engine. by 1898 rudolf diesel was a millionaire. his engines were used to power pipelines electric and water plants automobiles and trucks and marine craft and soon after were used in mines oil fields factories and transoceanic shipping. it comes as a surprise to many that dr. diesel did not start out to invent an engine to run on diesel fuel but run more efficiently on gasoline. after he and several co-workers were injured in a gasoline explosion in his lab he switched to vegetable oil. the diesel engine was commercially introduced at the paris worlds fair in 1900 running on pure peanut oil. as long as you have a supply of used oil youre in the conservation business. when you run out of discarded oil it will cost you about 2500 btus in petroleum fuels to grow and distribute 1000 btus in vegetable fuels. theres nothing new under the sun. we didnt drill our first oil well until we ran out of whales! rick nerdrevenge wrote by blair goldstein www.advance.com june 24 2005 its a simple recipe mix 10 gallons of vegetable oil with 10 gallons of diesel fuel. bobby tabor has been feeding the unusual mixture to his 1987 cream-colored mercedes benz for almost a week. it fuels his car on the 60-mile commute between his home in appomattox and his car technician job at mb euro service on boonsboro road in lynchburg. theres just one problem though - the smell. i dont notice any difference in the power or performance of the car tabor said. you do get an odor out of the tailpipe and it smells just like it does outside of a mcdonalds. its that charcoaled grill odor. mark barker owner of mb euro service said he didnt know about bobs experiment when he pulled into work monday but he smelled the change. when bobby comes to work we all get hungry barker said. we have to make a breakfast run. tabor said he has been talking to his brother who works in the heating and air conditioning business for almost five years about powering a car with vegetable oil. about three weeks ago they started their experiment. they get used vegetable oil for free from friends working at local restaurants. tabor said the free oil is the only way it is economical for him to use vegetable oil in his car. youre looking at spending $20 to $25 a week on fuel instead of $40 to $45 tabor said. you put $20 in your pocket. vegetable oil can only be used as fuel in some diesel engines. however tabor said he did not have to modify his car at all. in fact tabor said his car would run on pure vegetable oil as long as the temperature of the liquid remains above 160 degrees. the high temperature keeps the liquid thin and ensures that the oil will not cong

hi people i have a 1995 1500 with the 360 and auto. it has around 120k on it and i want to freshen up the performance a little so i am thinking of a dropping in a crate hemi from jegs. ill add headers and it already has a good free flow catback on it with edelbrock muffler. i am thinking of doing away with the fi and dropping a street-demon carb on it. not for any particular reason other than i am an old-school guy and i like to see a carb not to mention less stuff to f-up. i had thought of some rpm performer heads cam roller rockers and other stuff but it fast approached the cost of the crate. any idea on whether the hemi will drop in comfortably thanks in advance. dave .
