need a little more advice re tune-up

From : rifter

Q: as i posted a couple weeks ago my truck failed emissions. ive been working on tuning up the truck so i can go for the retest. ive got it running pretty smoothly now but have a few of questions. 1 ive rebuilt the carb and made all the adjustments according to the manual. but on startup i get some black smoke out the tailpipe for about 5 seconds just enough to fill the garage with the door open. after the engine warms up a little it goes away. should this just be a choke adjustment 2 what is the typical vacuum im getting about 18 steady with 12* timing @ 700 rpm. this is a ton better than the 15 i was getting earlier. see question 4 3 how hot should the exhaust be as it comes out of the tailpipe i can barely hold my hand for more than a few seconds about 3 from the end of the tailpipe. think its time for a new cat ive got one ready to put on but if its not necessary im sending it back and getting my money. 4 what is the process of setting the timing i was thinking which can be pretty dangerous plug the vacuum advance port on the carb and adjust the base timing. i did this but when i reconnect the vacuum advance the timing goes way up to 30* at idle. this causes the exhaust to sputter and put out nasty fumes. am i supposed to just leave the advance hooked up while adjusting the timing this is the way i finally did it last night but i want to make sure its right before wasting another trip to the emissions station. any help is appreciated. -josh .

1 ive rebuilt the carb and made all the adjustments according to the manual. but on startup i get some black smoke out the tailpipe for about 5 seconds just enough to fill the garage with the door open. after the engine warms up a little it goes away. should this just be a choke adjustment yes. check to be sure the choke pull off is working. it should pull the choke open a bit with a vacuum dashpot just after start up. 2 what is the typical vacuum im getting about 18 steady with 12* timing @ 700 rpm. this is a ton better than the 15 i was getting earlier. see question 4 18 is ok. idle should be about 750rpm 3 how hot should the exhaust be as it comes out of the tailpipe could be a big variance there depending on a number of things. i doubt its an accurate indicator of cat conv. health. i did this but when i reconnect the vacuum advance the timing goes way up to 30* at idle. as bir said you need to find ported vacuum to connect the advance. even if its the same as the diagram its not right. max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan .
