i have never owned a pickup before. i will be mostly driving between 6000 and 11000 feet and a turbocharger is definitely an asset at those elevations. i did a google search of groups on fuel mileage and got some data which did not look too bad. but i have more questions. after talking to friends i have settled on a 1999 or newer 24-valve turbo diesel dodge 2500. i want a manual transmission. it seems they make a 5- and 6-speed what years for those should i hold out for the 6-speed i do not want the quad cab. extended club cab or regular cab. i want to put a camper on it and tow a snowmobile trailer behind that. i think i need the long bed for the camper. do i what kind of fuel mileage should i get or should i say what kind of mileage do you get and doing what what should i look out for looks like i will be buying from a dealer as i cannot find much in private party sales. thanks for any advice charles. .

dont know if theyre similar but i have a 2004 dakota without the tow package. on mine the 4 wire connector under the dash had all the wires i needed to connect to the protege dodge adapter but the blue wire did not go all the way to the rear. on mine it went to a connector just behind the left front tire on the wheelwell a multiple wire connector that had more wires going into it than coming out of it. i assume if you had the tow package a different wiring harness would have been run from the front to the rear with the blue wire included. i simply ran a blue wire from the connector on the wheel well to the rear 7-pin tow connector and the brakes work fine. if you get the plug-in adapter from protege then you dont have any additional wiring under the dash just plug one end in the brake controller and the other in the flat 4 brake controller connector that dodge supplies under the dash mine actually had a tag that said brake.on the rear you will need a 7-pin plug but will also need to run the blue electric brake wire as noted above. some 7-pin plugs are designed to plug into the 4 wire plug at the rear so you have those 4 out of 7 wires connected simply by plugging it in. the blue wire will be the 5th wire of 7 and youll have 2 slots left for future use; one for charging the trailer battery and i cant recall what the other one is but i dont use it on my pop-up. a previous poster showed a link to dodge wiring. thats what i used to find where my wires ran. john todd wrote i just purchased an 05 ram 1500 qc 4x4 slt w/4.7 l 3.92 rear. i tow a popup camper and have a question about the brake controller harness and factory 7 pin trailer plug. the truck did not come with the factory tow package so all i have is the flat 4 connector under the bumper. ive heard that the brake controller plug is under the dash near the brake pedal. when i look there i see a wiring block near the emergency brake pedal with a blue 4 pin plug. is this the brake controller harness since i have the flat four can i purchase a factory 7 pin harness and if so does it simply plug in somewhere under the truck i have no problem wiring up the 12v and brake line if need be - just wondering if the the truck was pre-wired for the 7 pin plug already. todd .

joseph myers wrote on my 89 that happened when the hot wire going to the fuel cutout solenoid shorted after the insulation rubbed through due to vibrating against a bracket. jmtcw joseph your 2 cents worth sent me looking at exposed wires touching things again. this time up close with 100 watts of light. there it was exactly as you said. fixed the wire replaced the link and cranked her up. thanks you saved me hours of troubleshooting and then re-bundling wires. thanks again for the timely reply. regards lee .

nosey wrote tbone wrote yea it sounds like your new truck went for a swim before you bought it. the actual seats were probably replaces due to water damage along with the carpet. you might want to lift the carpet and look for damage on the floor boards as well. not necessarily. the seat brackets on my 99 are rusty too. the rust started shortly after i got it. im the first owner. i got it less than a month after it was built. its not severe rust yet just a uniform surface discoloration. same on my 98 and its never been swimming in its life! smh .

so many say that about the hemi but i find the opposite. i also have a 2001 ram 1500 qc with the 5.9l. the hemi flat outperforms it with ease and i get better mpg. now when i load it down such as towing the hemis mpg drops to 8-10 but it does perform well. andy wrote gas thinking of trading in my 99 dakota sport v6 for a new 05 ram 1500 quad cab 4x2 hemi sport appearance group/look. saw some last night at the dealer and with the employee discount and other discounts the hole in the pocket would be about $22k. any pitfalls or drawbacks on the new rams - especially the hemi engine thanks in advance for your advice. ray austin tx ======= .

lol because there is no reason for an argument. never stopped you in the past. pkb and as if to prove me correct in a spot where there is no reason for an argument and plenty of reason to simply shut up as in saving face and proving you can walk away from what you think is a non issue you jump right in with stupid name calling. like it or not you do jump right through hopps placed in your path. or in this case placed as a diversionary tactic.... right friggin through. almost like shooting fish in a barrel except the splash back in the face. any answer from you at this point would simply prove me correct even further. can you resist -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. lol because there is no reason for an argument. never stopped you in the past. pkb my initial comment was based on the simple logic that if you could not obtain something how would you know what its actual properties are but in the cartoon world anything can happen and for all i know even though it is unobtainable its properties may still be known and since i dont remember or know either way why argue about it. indeed. perhaps you should remember that when discussing such things as helium warranty work and...... well almost anything as far as you are concerned. pkb -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

ok heres the deal. im a registered nurse not a mechanic but i have a question. i have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 5.2 magnum. ive got a gibson dual exhaust connected thats pretty much rotting out. im pressed for cash right now so i thought id slip a sleave over the open holes in the tailpipe where the hangers used to be and use another to reconnect to the muffler. i need to pass inspection soon it expired 7/31. i can get everything i need from the local carquest. should i or should i wait and get the muffler replaced lock stock and barrel as a rn you know that a band-aid is a temporary fix. as long as you realized that putting patches on is temporary and youll soon need to patch another spot theres not a problem with it. denny .

hi i have a 2003 quad cab ram 1500 with about 1500 miles on it i know its not a sports car but of late it seems to be bouncing around a lot more. normally its only a very light load in the truck but occasionally i do tow a trailer and fill the back. any thoughts as to the best way to go forward with this. i live in the uk so its not so easy to get answers here. thanks when the time came for my 2500 to have new shocks lots more than 1500 miles i put rancho 9000 shocks on. they are adjustible with 9 positions. i can set it one way for no load and another for when im taking my 5th wheel around. looking around 4wheel parts is having a sale this weekend buy 3 get the 4th one free. try http//www.4wheelparts.com/4wp/products/manufacturer.aspcat=sus&man=ran&prodline=ran&catname=suspension or http//tinyurl.com/byxcz $271us. -- fmb only one b in fmb no affiliation with 4wheelparts or merriam-webster .

ok short version mopar elected to keep the same basic valve body that has been used forever in the 904/727 and added a piece on for od and lock-up with the advent of the 500/518 units then they decided to stay with it when they went to the electronic governor the vehicle speed sensor tells the ecm what the speed is; the ecm tells a governor pressure solenoid to generate a hydraulic pressure corresponding to vehicle speed so far so good if theyd stopped there............ but then the diddle with it urge overcame common sense and they added a governor pressure transducer to feed back the gps pressure to the ecm to see if it was working right unfortunately the gpt doesnt read the pressure right thinks its too low and the ecm tells the gps to jack up the pressure a scan tool will show governor pressure of 20 30 even 50 psi at stop when it should be zero result is 2nd 3rd or even 4th gear starts get a scanner on it and watch the gov press line when it acts up g i didnt try that but what i have also found is that when tried to pass or jumping on it she downshifts but goes through the gears to fast. kinda like shes slipping i had a trans flush done that b&g stuff..talk to me about that govner though..please... thanks .

sir an engine with 139k miles will use some oil due to ring wear etc. as i am shure you are aware blue smoke is oil and white is water. i had a 318 cid ram that started showing those symptoms that is small amounts of blue smoke when starting. it was leaking oil past the valve stem seals. the fix was to have the heads rebuilt any decent auto machine shop will do it. maxpower is also correct when suggesting not to use aditives. they indeed are a waste of money and can actually leave deposits thruout the lower engine and block passages. henry i have a 1995 dodge dakota with the 3.9 v6. i have changed the oil religeously in it every 3k since it was new and now has 139k on it. recently it has started to smoke when i start it and is using oil. is there anything cheap or like and additive i can put in it to solve this problem i know it needs rebuild but i cant afford that. john .
