from a novice... is there a difference between a 5-wheel and a gooseneck i thought it was the same a 5th wheel is what you see on the back of a semi tractor... its a plate with jaws in it that clamps onto a pin on the trailer. the pickup variety are just smaller physically but work the same way. a gooseneck uses a ball mount just like you would use on a receiver hitch only its a bigger ball mounted in the truck bed and the trailer has a long tube the gooseneck with a coupler on the end of it. both do pretty much the same thing locate the pin weight of the trailer over the axle of the tow vehicle. also i would guess that trailer brakes are a must... in most states any trailer over 3000lbs. must have trailer brakes. if you are towing close to the max i would imagine its a good idea...or are the trucks brakes adequate if you have a manual transmission you get get an exhaust brake. if you tow often and heavy it can really help extend the life of your trucks brakes because you wont use them as much. its not necessary but its definately in the nice to have category. .
