i have a 93 olds eighty-eight. i recently replaced the battery and alternator. i know the alt. was shot as it blew the rear bearing out of it. the battery kept going dead so i took it out and put it on slow charge for about 26 hours. after overnight in the car it went dead again. figuring that it was just the cheap wally world battery that my son bought i replaced it again today with a better one. my electrician friend checked the amp draw with everything in the car shut off andthe ignition off and it shows a 2.5 amp constant draw. i know it draws a little to keep the computer memory but is this an excessive draw i need to know what is considered normal before i start hunting for the culprit. any tips would be appreciated. randy yes thats excessive. at 2.5 amps @ 12.5 volts there is approx. 31.25 watts of power being drawn. to get that power through the circuit there will be approx. 5 ohms resistance. hope this helps. .

it sounds like you have a ground problem to the instrument cluster. the ground is floating to near 12 volts and turns on the lamp opposite to what it should. could also be a multi function switch problem or a wiring short. on sat 24 jan 2004 225616 -0600 chevguy gro34wser@hotmail.com wrote have an 84 dodge ram 150 p/u... current project truck. have something drawing current off the battery with truck sitting still no keys in the ignition nothing lights etc. on. current assumptions of course include short in wiring somewhere. have visually checked for cut/broken/shorted wiring... to no avail. looking for advice on best way to search for this source of the problem... help lol! thanks!!! yes the suggestions that have been posted are excellent places to start. i just had to rip apart all the wiring harnesses and backtrace all the wiring in a 89 ram. i fixed everything but now it is doing something weird with the headlights on once in a while the high beam indicator light will act opposite to truth indicating high beams on when on low off on high beams. the turn signal indicators came on steady. i think it could be the steering multiswitch any suggestions the reason why i post this here is maybe we can help eachother stumble through this bizarre and scary world of electrical obscurities. p.s. is there any aftermarket stuff installed or previously installed on the vehicle trailer wiring harness brake controller fog lights etc.. .

it is obvious from what you said that you are not getting fuel to the injectors. when this happens verify that the fuel pump is getting power with a volt meter. if it is getting power can you hear it run if the engine is not turning over after a few seconds the power to the fuel pump is turned off by the computer as a safety measure. if you have no pressure to the fuel rail 1 no fuel in tank 2 bad pump 3 bad fuel pressure regulator dumps all fuel back to tank 4 plugged fuel filter 5 bad fuel pump relay 6 bad computer 7 rusty electrical connection or ground connection 8 water in the gas tank that will not go through the pump sock screen a code 12 is battery disconnected. you did this. if you do not want to pay to hope and poke parts at it you will have to be able to make a series of measurements during the time when it is not running. you can do it smart and take a some time to make measurements or pay lots of money and shotgun all the parts that might be the cause of the problem. both methods work eventually. on sun 25 jan 2004 034615 -0500 robbo robbo71@dreamscape.com wrote dodge ram 5.2 4x4 49000 miles....dead. i can start this thing up and drive it for only 10 miles then i lose all fuel into the fuel rail. shut it off sit 15-20 minutes start it back up drive exactly 10 more miles and it does it all over again. throws up various codes124351 so i replaced the coilcode 43 per the shop didnt work. now they say fuel pump$230! but i ask how can it work fine for exactly 10 miles and then die and re-birth itself got no answer and dont care to spend over $200 to try it and have the same thing all over again i already ate $35 on a coil. unplugged the battery to reset codes and #12 is still coming up constant but 43 is gone as well as 51. the only thing i do know is when it died again and was popping & farting in the middle of the road i got pissed and happened to have a can of ether which i sprayed into the airbox and amazingly i was able to rev the piss out of it until i stopped blasting ether in it. checked the fuel rail again and got just a dribble with a ton of air. let it sit runs fine 10 milesexactly and the fun starts all over again. why will it run for exactly 10 miles before it screws up i cant believe what a fuel pump for this thing costs either! wow! btw it has a half-tankful of fuel in it so the air in the rail has got me obscenely baffled. anyone else ever encounter this kind of weirdness in a dodge before or any vehicle for that matter .

93 would have a cs-130 alternator with a plug-in field connection the normal draw from the battery is less than 0.04 amps. 2.5 amps sounds like either a light is on or the alternator field is always on. did you swap the two small wires to the back of the new alternator on sun 25 jan 2004 201948 -0500 prowler99 camcopa2002@yahoo.com wrote i have a 93 olds eighty-eight. i recently replaced the battery and alternator. i know the alt. was shot as it blew the rear bearing out of it. the battery kept going dead so i took it out and put it on slow charge for about 26 hours. after overnight in the car it went dead again. figuring that it was just the cheap wally world battery that my son bought i replaced it again today with a better one. my electrician friend checked the amp draw with everything in the car shut off andthe ignition off and it shows a 2.5 amp constant draw. i know it draws a little to keep the computer memory but is this an excessive draw i need to know what is considered normal before i start hunting for the culprit. any tips would be appreciated. randy .

not sure if its a dry cell but it could be.... little silver box with steel cable coming out of it the cable being attached to one of the safety chain hooks.... yep thats it i understand the batteries are a bit hard to find and pricey when they need replacement. i have a friend up in the bay area whose nephew has an alarm installation business he has found that the 12 volt backup batteries work real well as replacements. course he does get somewhat of a discount on the batteries politics the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich. .

am considering buying an 01 or 02 durango. any opinions good or bad would be appreciated. thanks mike i bought an 01 a year ago used. i looked several months until i found exactly what i wanted in the condition i wanted. so far it has been a great vehicle and fun to drive. with just 40k it is starting to need the normal maintenance items but nothing big. it seems to be very well made but it is far from a perfect vehicle. i realized that going in. my biggest complaint is the gas mileage. no i dont expect 50 mpg but in my opinion dodge has always been behind on mpg unless it is one of their mini imports.. good luck on your purchase. i joined the durangos owners club and got to meet a lot of the members when we toured the durango factory in newark. james .

i just bought a new 2004 dodge dakota quad cab 4x4 with 300 delivery miles on it while we were picking it up at the dealer my wife noticed that paint was comming off in the wheel well blue paint same as the body color. is that normal this is the first 4x4 ive owned and never really paid much attention to other trucks since you can see the wheel well better on 4xs. should i get it undercoated and or rust proofed i know new trucks have better galvanized steel. do nerf bars help protect the doors how about mud flaps and a hood shield thanks for any input .
