damn dogs! (front drive vacuum hoses)

Q: the first thing i would have done was stop and drain some fuel out of the filter and watch for moisture then i would change out the filter element with the spare i always carry. if that didnt fix it then i would suspect the lift pump. install a supply fp gauge on the outlet from fuel filter. lift pump is easy to change you can do it from the top if you have long arms. i did mine from the bottom takes a little longer cause you have to remove the starter first. on sat 21 may 2005 223839 gmt greg surratt glsurratt@verizon.net wrote need some help diagnosing a problem on my 98 3500 with cummins 24 valve/auto/3.54 rears. i just made a three day trip from virginia to massachusetts and back. the trip up was outstanding - 20 mpg at 65 mph. the trip back was somewhat less fun. during all of the following all dash indications oil temp etc were normal. the water in fuel light never came on. oil and water levels are good no discoloration in either of them after 550 miles. i fueled up at a pilot truck stop at exit 1 on i-84 in massachusetts for the trip back. about 30 miles later the truck was missing if i tried to accelerate above about 70 mph and while cruising on some of the hills in north central connecticut. the transmission couldnt figure out where it need to be when this happened. if it were a v-8 gasser id guess it was not firing on about three cylinders but this is a cummins. after 150 miles i stopped to eat and when i pulled back on the freeway i had heavy white smoke under acceleration until i got up to speed missing above 2000 rpm and the same confused transmission. cruise at 65 mph 1800 rpm was normal. after about 350 miles the problems with the smoke disappeared but i still have the missing at above 2500 rpm. and if i drop down out of overdrive and punch it it is worse. right now the truck appears to be running normal with good power and acceleration until it hits 2500 rpm in any gear. no codes on the dash - does the cummins use the check engine light im hoping i just got a load of bad fuel and ill change the fuel filter tomorrow and see if the problems go away. that would explain the missing at high rpm - fuel starvation. but what would have caused the white smoke id appreciate any comments before i take it to the dealer. greg 98 3500 qc 4x2 cummins isb auto 3.541 driftwood with leather and all the heavy duty options. 89 nu-wa champagne edition 34 foot fifth wheel. .

trey wrote op said he wanted truck for occasional weekend use trips to the airport. doesnt need 4wd for that. what if he needs to pull a loaded grain wagon out of the field and plow snow thats laying on top of an inch of ice on the way to the airport i the old j20 i have started life as a farm truck with my father inlaw and was used to pull grain wagons and trailers weighing up to 23000lbs out of the field and it has no locking diffs and i bought it off of him 16 years ago when he bought a new truck also with open diffs. i pushed snow with it for over 11 years in all kinds of conditon including a blizzard once and never got stuck in all those years. i also have a 2000 k3500 with open diffs that has been stuck twice once when it slipped of of a lane with all tires slipping and once on a country lane and when it did all 4 tires spun on the icy under snow and a locker would not have done anything. i pulled it out with the j20 with its open axles. if you really want good preformance on thick ice you need studded tires or chians and some weight not a locker because you want positive directional control with no fishtailing which a locker will do on ice most of the time. i run 4 studded tires on one of my trucks and it is nice in ice especailly when transporting or speading salt on ice coverd lots directional control is paramount when plowing snow. i plan to restore j20 someday as itis now retired to sitting in barn though it still runs well. when i meet my wife i had a 72 3/4 t gmc with a 4 speed and open diffs and we used to have contests to see who could pull the biggest loads out of field and up to mill. it was about a draw. after he sold his 3 year old 2wd ford with a locker and got the j20 when he or i would get bogged down we were spinning all 4 tires and we could disconect and drive away and use a tractor to pull out wagons that were sunk in too deep to pull out with truck. when i ran with 3 to 4000lbs of grain in bed it never got hung up and rarely did without it. there are some instances where a locker will help but it is not the must have that some make it out to be with a 4x4 and if i bought a new 4x4 plow truck tomorrow it would have open diffs. with a 2wd a locker does tend to be more helpful sometimes. -- posted using the http//www.autoforumz.com interface at authors request articles individually checked for conformance to usenet standards topic url http//www.autoforumz.com/dodge-help-decide-pls-ftopict121296.html visit topic url to contact author reg. reqd. report abuse http//www.autoforumz.com/eform.phpp=590382 .

ok - i am looking for a pickup. just for weekend use and occasional commutes to airport and as a second vehicle when my primary is unavailable. ok i was looking to spend as minimal of an amount as possible. i found this - a dodge 2002 1500 quad cab 4. engine 4wd 5 speed mt. 26k miles. $16000. more than i wanted to spend but a nice truck. way more than you need to spend for what you say you need a truck for. before i saw this one i was looking at a chevy 1997 ext cab 4x4 154k miles for $7500. too many miles on it. pros on chevy - price ext cab not quad cab automatic power locks. cons - high mileage. you could end up tossing a ton of money into this puppy. pros on dodge - only 25k miles. cons - steel wheels look ugly no power locks or windows price. hmmm - what to do i do not like payments and i do not have 16k cash. i do not have $7500 cash either but am closer depending what my 1995 contour sells for. anyone interested buy a 2wd truck. why pay for somthing that you wont use roy .

where is the a/c drain i dont smell the anti-freeze in the cab though. i had a couple guys riding on my tailgate for a short while yesterday and they smelled it and then i thought i smelled it coming from under the hood after that while standing outside the drivers door. but couldnt find any visual evidence of a leak under the hood. heck i cant even tell where the thermostat goes on that engine. .

that auburn diff looks like a nice piece. yep - i installed one for a friend with a 00 durango. decent unit and pretty simple to install. just to make sure if i go with the auburn ill also need to get a ring a pinion set along aftermarket bearings. what brand do you recommend for these no - you leave your pinion alone and re-use the ring gear. when you buy the lsd also order a master install kit. this is a complete set of bearings both carrier bearings and pinion bearings which you wont use shims again which wont be used new ring gear bolts which should be used and marking compound. it will run around $100. give this to your installer along with the lsd unit and he should have everything he needs to complete the job. whoever you have do the job make sure they understand what theyre doing. another friend had a professional driveline shop install a new set of gears for him and they obviously over-torqued all the ring gear bolts probably just ran them down with an impact wrench because more than half of them wound up shearing off inside the housing. that made for quite a mess to clean up. .

tbone wrote well then miles if this is true then it more than proves my point that conservation is the answer. gas prices here have dropped close to 20 cents a gallon in some areas and if demand has not gone up... 20 cents from what point you seem to be happy it dropped 20 cents even though it went up 50 prior to that.. lol talk about that right wing fuzzy logic. sure im happy that it dropped. i would be happier that it never went up and know that it probably will again and will take that into account when i buy my next vehicle. you think conservation is whats lowered gas prices too bad they really havent lowerd. just down from a level well above the mean lol if they went down then they were lowered any way that you try to spin it. the fact is that the price of oil is going down as you have said and the reason is higher than expected inventories even though we are going into the peak driving season and there is a higher demand for fuel for yard maintenance equipment as well. the only way this can happen is either the oil storage tanks have developed a way to make their own oil or conservation forced or not has reduced demand below current supply. it is either that or it is artificial price manipulation and control something else that you said could not be done. either way miles you are still wrong. lol sorry miles but as we have already discussed these current hybrids are the foundation for tomorrows possible fuel cell vehicles. hybrid technology will contribute little to other possible fuel sources. plus its expensive heavy bulky etc. sorry miles but you are wrong once again. hybrid vehicles are the test bed for newer technologies. you keep talking about fuel cell vehicles when it is obvious that you dont have a clue as to what they are. a fuel cell develops electricity and in order to use it you need electric motors. now as im sure you know electric motors have a huge variation on demand for current and the easiest and most economical way to deal with that is for the fuel cell to charge high capacity batteries that then supply the required current to the motors. sounds a lot like a hybrid now doesnt it. then you can add in the facts that a whole new set of systems and technology needs to be developed and perfected for fully electric vehicles to function to our current expectations and what better platform to develop them on! now if you really think that they have done nothing else lets see a little of that proof im supposed to prove what they havent done there goes your old case of reverse scrambled logic!! iow you cant do it so your conclusion that they have done nothing is as you say to me nothing more than a guess and an incorrect one at that. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

collins & aikman products corp. former ceo of the company david a. stockman has quit his postion and given a tidy 20 million dollar going away present for his gallant efforts to ruin the company. shortly after his retirement the company is forced to file bankruptcy and now is on the verge of bringing the automotive industry to a grinding halt !! collins & aikman owes millions of dollars to small suppliers who can scarcely operate in this political environment and now the automotive supplier giant is taking them to the cleaners in bankruptcy !! previous ceo jerry mosingo was similarly retired several years ago and was promised payments on his retirement...... when these never came he also filed suit against the corporate giant. we here in the uaw would like to ask our fellow workers to petition their congressman for an investigation into stockmans financial affairs and those of his wife jennifer who is the nation co-chairman for the republican majority for choice. and also a blackstone partner former owners of collins & aikman !! stockman lives on an 11 million dollar estate on conyers farm road in greenwich connecticut. we in the uaw believe that stockman has falsely represented his company and has dishonored his alliance with the uaw and should be made to forfit any bonus earnings while ceo. please write your congressman !!!! remember ..... the job you save could be your own !!! .

ms networking dude wrote i bought this loaded beauty recently but it doesnt have a posi the factory now calls it an anti-slip differential. i want to put a posi in it but ive heard mixed info on this. one person told me i cant just swap out the gears because the housing is different and the axles are slighty beefier so it would require a complete housing swap. someone else told me i can just swap out the guts or just go aftermarket. the ram uses the same corporate 9. rear that my dakota has. no big deal. limited slip differential lsd is a factory option and has been just about forever. adding lsd is a pretty simple operation for a competent diff shop. if youre using it mostly for street snow boat ramps fire roads etc the lsd will be your best choice. if you do serious off roading and never see snow/ice covered roadways you should consider something stronger. -- ..bob 1997 hd fxdwg - turbocharged! 2001 dodge dakota qc 5.9/4x4/3.92 1966 mustang coupe - daily driver 1966 ffr cobra - ongoing project .
