Q: i used to get above-average 16mpg city/19+hw for 2001 dodge dakota quad 4.7 with oem goodyear tires the larger 16s. just put on new bridgestone dueler at revos and a tonneau and suddenly mileage has dropped to 14.5/15.5. also changed plugs and air filter. whats up i thought mileage was supposed to go up with tonneau! thanks. .

i used to get above-average 16mpg city/19+hw for 2001 dodge dakota quad 4.7 with oem goodyear tires the larger 16s. just put on new bridgestone dueler at revos and a tonneau and suddenly mileage has dropped to 14.5/15.5. also changed plugs and air filter. whats up i thought mileage was supposed to go up with tonneau! too many changes at once to know what to blame. duelers are aimed toward part-time offroad use with less continuous ridges and probably softer rubber than those highway rtss. may hurt mileage a little. tonneau should reduce turbulence and thereby help a little mostly at highway speed. plugs should not hurt if they are correct resistance heat range and properly gapped. unless you got bosch platinums which absolutely suck imo. air filter can hurt mileage if it is restrictive. i seemed to notice fram hurt mileage a couple of points and have sworn off their products. dont discount the driver. having done all that work you may be feeling sporty and pressing harder on the pedal. most folks drive according to the feel of acceleration on the backside and will burn fuel in proportion to mood regardless of all other factors. and at the same time the fresh air charge coming into the engine is getting warmer and refineries are switching over to their summer blend fuels. theres also the remote chance you may have disconnected or damaged a wire sensor or vacuum hose in the process. .
