cummins question

From : tl

Q: hello im looking to buy a 2500 with the cummins engine and i was trying to get up in the 98-001 year range i was just given a bit of advice....i was told that trying to get a pre 1998 that was 12 valve was the way to go because the 24 valve is electronic and has all kinds of sensors to act up and also the 12 valve is much cheaper to repair. any insight and opinions would be helpful . im curious how they compare for power and reliability .

now that its 1am and was looking around on the internet for diesel mods. i found an upgraded intercooler for the ford powerstroke and was just wondering if the dodge cummins had an intercooler on it or not. what kind of boost does the stock turbo put out i know a lot of heat is made in the compression with turbos and superchargers what is done about this in the cummins or is it really even an issue my 03 ho 6sp has an intercooler. im not sure how much boost the turbo gives as ive not put on extra guages yet. when i do i expect to monitor boost exhaust temp and fuel pressure. -- fmb only one b in fmb .

wondering if the dodge cummins had an intercooler on it or not. absolutely. none of the big 3 has offered a non-intercooled turbo diesel for quite some time. what kind of boost does the stock turbo put out 25psi or so for the 03s and 04s just over 30psi for the 04.5 cummins 600s i know a lot of heat is made in the compression with turbos and superchargers what is done about this in the cummins or is it really even an issue its definately an issue and the exact reason for having an intercooler. .

i have been told that only the earliest cummins did not have an intercooler 89 through the 90 or 91 or thereabouts. mine is a 92 12 valve model that does have the intercooler and this year model only put out 140 hp with 400 ft lbs of torque. with the 24 valve higher output that they have these days i would bet good money that they still install them. for more info a few sites that will give you an idea of what can be done and what is available; http//www.tstproducts.com/ http//www.bankspower.com/ http//thepowershop.com/frameset.htm http//www.cummins.com/na/pages/en/products/dodgeram/index.cfm http//www.turbodieselregister.com/ bob now that its 1am and was looking around on the internet for diesel mods. i found an upgraded intercooler for the ford powerstroke and was just wondering if the dodge cummins had an intercooler on it or not. what kind of boost does the stock turbo put out i know a lot of heat is made in the compression with turbos and superchargers what is done about this in the cummins or is it really even an issue .

i run a 98 3500 cummins last 1/2 of 98...24v cummins...the only thing ive had to do @ 100k is to replace the turbo. .

looks like the intercooler thing was answered well. the best boost pressure ive seen on my 01 ram has been 34 lbs pulling a steep hill with my foot in it. normally i see around 16 to 20. andy now that its 1am and was looking around on the internet for diesel mods. i found an upgraded intercooler for the ford powerstroke and was just wondering if the dodge cummins had an intercooler on it or not. what kind of boost does the stock turbo put out i know a lot of heat is made in the compression with turbos and superchargers what is done about this in the cummins or is it really even an issue .

the only thing ive done to the air side of the engine so far has been an open air box and an afe filter. i havent done anything to the turbo yet besides take out that quieting ring they put in there. i also recall not having one of those little elbow fittings on the turbo. when i put my exhaust brake on the kit came with an over-sized fitting for that to replace the stock one but i didnt have that part on my turbo. andy andy wrote looks like the intercooler thing was answered well. the best boost pressure ive seen on my 01 ram has been 34 lbs pulling a steep hill with my foot in it. normally i see around 16 to 20. andy you must be running a boost elbow or something else to fool the waste gate. normally on my year model 1999 the waste gate will start to open at 20 psi and the ecm will start defueling about that time. shortly after that a code will be set. if you are bone stock and you got a 34 psi reading then i would think something is wrong some where. jerry .

the early 98s are 12valves.i personally bought a new 94 when they first came out & just got a 98 12v quad cab.i wanted the 12 valve because they are more trouble-free. you should go here;http//www.turbodieselregister.com/ .
