you mean the doghouse that name came about because of the mack trucks mascot the bulldog. mack was one of the first companies to offer an interior cover on its large trucks to give better access to the engine. so the cover became known as a doghouse since mack the bulldog had it.. the earliest autos used tiller steering since many were converted horse drawn coaches. the operators position behind the tiller became known as the helm. hollywood mufflers were usually ones that were real loud so that the auto sound could be recorded from a distance. cut-outs are actually a device used to divert the exhaust from the mufflers and pipes to open pipes to increase power. the glove compartment was just that the place where you stored your driving gloves since many early autos were crank start and open you wore gloves to protect your hands from harm especially if you were a woman. dirty hands were not considered a virtue in society. -- steve williams near cooperstown ny because everybody wants to be a lexicographer & wordsmith & punner & time-waster everybody would thus be vastly uninterested in thrashing this note. when i hear em/yall talking about the birdhouse or whatever ya call the large console latched thing in my 86 250 ram van covering the carb & air filter i am thus wondering about other silly names for various things that ive never heard for instance perhaps a steering wheel is playfully called ...helm or rudder or wheel or turning device or the place to temporarily enplace saw-off the semi-clever lock thing or the muffler might be called the silencer or the hollywood or the cut-outs or just a real dumb thing to annoy the neigbors with or the darkened window or sun-defender or the glove compartment is you dont get my exact idea but exact is not exactly the wide-open inquiry .
