add limited slip to 02 Dakota?

From : leetom lawrence

Q: well i got stuck pretty good in the snow yesterday had to shovel for 30 minutes or more to get out. i remember when i bought the truck new i could have added the limited slip rear differential for less then $300. question is can i still have one installed for anywhere near that price any suggestions on how to approach this i would not be doing the wrench work myself. salvaged rear end dealer would it even be worth it considering i already have 4 wheel drive i would get a winch but here in north dakota there never seems to be anything nearby to hook to. thanks! lee 02 dakota quad cab 4x4 4.7 v8 .

would it even be worth it considering i already have 4 wheel drive i would get a winch but here in north dakota there never seems to be anything nearby to hook to. youd need to buy the lsd unit itself - about $200-$300 depending on brand. then figure about $500 labor to change it out. there are lockers term used loosely - i wouldnt compare these to a detroit locker by powertrax that you can install yourself. their strength is questionable and the behavior of an actual locker on the street is less than desirable. the next time you find yourself stuck engage 4wd give the emergency brake pedal a couple of clicks not enough to lock the rears just enough to put some drag on em and slowly apply throttle. you may not get unstuck but at least both rear tires will turn and thats as good as any lsd or locker is going to do .

ok someone make another gallon or two of coffee for me i obviously havent had enough. . . duh. if it is the original chain it can still be ok but not likely. the one in the 318 in my truck had over 200k on it but it was close to being loose enough to jump time. both engines in stock form have enough clearance to allow the chain to jump without damage and if it did jump time it would retard the cam making a terrible lack of performance if it ran at all which i doubt. i had a 72 360 in a b-350 van that jumped time and didnt start again until i repaired it but there was no valve / piston noise. -- budd cochran in tribute to the united states of america and the state of israel two bastions of strength in a world filled with strife and terrorism. ------ on wed 03 dec 2003 142040 gmt budd cochran mr-d150spam@citlink.net wrote steve how many miles are on it have you gone to a lower grade of fuel to try and save money does it make more of the noise climbing a hill or accelerating than when just driving on flat road it from your description sounds like pinging and not a mechanical problem. changing the water pump and timing chain arent big jobs but if you dont need to why do it lets see what we can figure out here. budd... post topic line says 110000 miles on it... dont know if thats all on the original timing chain though .

might be an old time army trick but you ever try to drive a stake into frozen soil my dad had me put in a cedar post in january in sodak once. the ground was frozen to about 18 inches. he showed me a trick though. chip out a little depression in the ground with a pick-axe where you want the post to be. then pour a gallon of hot saltwater in the depression. it has to be really salty nearly to the point of salt precipitating out of the solution. come back in a few hours and the ground under the little depression is mostly thawed and you can dig through it. it may take another gallon of saltwater to finish the job but it can be done. ;- problem is youre probably not going to have access to hot saltwater and several hours when youre stuck in the snow in bfe..... ever try to find a log in north dakota nodaks state tree is the rea pole. the ground freezes so hard some years they cant dig graves so they just put the body on top till spring!!!!!!!!!! seriously they wait till spring to bury the deceased. i think in a lot of places they dig holes in the cemetary in the fall before freeze-up. they may or may not fill all the holes by spring.... speaking of life up north i get a kick out of southerners who wonder why there is a flag on a 20 pole on all of the fire hydrants. answer so they can find the hydrant in the big snowdrifts! its windy there also. sometimes the windmill is still turning three days after the wind dies down. speaking of life in the arid southwest i get a kick out of easterners who wonder how beer cans got stuck in tree branches that are hanging 30 feet over a lake reservoir. answer thats where the lake level was a year or two ago and boaters put the beer cans there.... lol you can bury a log or drive a stake in the ground to pull on an old army trick. bt&di .

problem is youre probably not going to have access to hot saltwater and several hours when youre stuck in the snow in bfe.... lol at least youll have a couple of hours!!!!!! i think in a lot of places they dig holes in the cemetary in the fall before freeze-up. but then you hve to keep the dirt inside somewhere it wont freeze. depending on how much snow there is you cant cover all the holes. then with open holes some body will fall in one and sue for mental anguish. lots simpler to wait till spring i get a kick out of easterners who wonder how beer cans got stuck in tree branches that are hanging 30 feet we had a couple geniuses up here who had stolen a car and were being chased by the county sheriff. they missed a curve hit the curb launched into the air and smacked a tree about 15 feet up at around 100 mph. there werent any survivors to bury ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .
