if you could replace your cummins 5.9 engine with another diesel...what would it be a cat. personally id go with a deutz liquid cooled 5.7 liter which produces 240 horses and 700 foot pounds of torque @ 1400 rpm out of the crate...no tuning baby. if the duetz is anything like the rest of the worlds diesels including the cummins b its available in a number of power ratings. also it only uses 195 g/kwh! id think it would be the ultimate in economy and utility! economy and power on the street are directly related to your foot position on the pedal. it has a bore/stroke of 98mm/126mm verses the cummins 102mm/120mm. diesel enthusiasts will immediately recognize the benefits. a change of 4mm and 6mm respectively isnt enough to bother with. sure maybe there is more rpm to be had more quickly but its a diesel not a drag racer. at least it wasnt designed to be a drag racer...... im not high on four valves but deutz makes the best of it. which shows exactly the amount of experience you have in engine design. four valves per cylinder does the following 1. allows for more intake cross-sectional area for higher flow and better use of valve open duration. 2. allows for use of smaller valves which cool faster thus lowering wear on seat and face. 3. allows for the use of a smaller bore while getting the larger cross sectional area. 4. cuts down on valve shrouding effect. for you guys that buy horse power...may not be your cup of tea...personally i buy torque and economy. the cummins b series is available in ratings of up to 375hp and up to 700ftlbs last i checked. max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan .

pretty much any engine without a windage tray will consume more oil at sustained high rpm. cylinder walls get over-lubricated so the rings have to scrape off more oil more oil gets flooded into the top end and can be sucked up by the pcv system and general the whole engine gets filled with fine oil mist that winds up going straight out the pcv system and getting burned. 4 quarts in 800 miles is ridiculously excessive though. something else is wrong- missing baffles in the valve covers a big leak or a really worn-out engine. a certian minute volume of oil is consumed each cycle due to the surface finish on the cylinder wall. it is designed that way. ring lubrication. there is also a specific volume of oil contained within the piston skirt surface finish to lubricate it. i disagree with the too much oil that it floats the rings theory in that the piston is designed to control the oil. the cylinder wall clearances with the piston skirt determine the maximum volume of oil that can be passed on to the oil ring. the oil ring and piston are designed to constructively dispense this known volume of oil to critical places wrist pin for instance. increased rpm would not cause any significant increase in oil bypassing the control ring. th

any recommended links to teach me more about a lift pump never heard of one as well as links to aftermarket replacements http//www.dieseltruckresource.com excellent info. at that site and free access. for a quick overview the lift pump is an electric pump mounted on or close to the engine drivers side before the fuel filter. its job is to pull lift fuel from the tank no pumps inside the tank on a diesel - just a pickup tube and a screen push it through the fuel filter and up to the injection pump in your case a bosch vp44 rotary pump. the lift pump flows much more fuel than is needed for injection - the rest of the fuel is used to cool and lubricate the injection pump and gets returned to the tank. therein lies the problem... the vp44 is very dependent on that fuel to cool and lubricate it. if the lift pump craps out the vp44 will run dry and quickly eat itself up. the problem lies in the design of the lift pump itself. it was designed to pull fuel from a tank maybe 24-36 away think of most medium-duty trucks with side fuel tanks. in the pickup application its pulling fuel from much further away placing more of a load on the pump and its jsut not up to the task long-term. there are several choices for replacement lift pumps which you can read all about on the above website. some guys run holley pumps some run carter pumps others myself included run more elaborate systems like a fass fuel air seperator system fuel preperator or airdog system all the same basic design - high-capacity high-flow pump with integrated spin-on filter and water seperator that removes all trapped air from the fuel - resulting in a smoother running engine. but - one thing at a time. read through the 2nd generation forum engine/trans on the above site. youll see quite a bit of discussion on pumps problems and remedies. .

whats the matter tom upset that your right wing idiot got beat. tom - youre the one with the obsession here. and if you doubt that take a look at the amount of posts from you since the debate and how many of them relate to the intended subject of this group. as for me i dont really have an opinion one way or the other - certainly not enough to spend a good chunk of my time debating away on a freakin truck group. if this is true then wtf are you posting in it now then if you didnt have an opinion you should have minded you own business. and according to you everyone should mind their own business except you. nice double standard tom even for a liberal troll like you. my point in all this youve pretty much proved over this past year that you dont know what youre talking about when it comes to trucks... now youre hell-bent to prove the same about your political knowledge. and in that youre making astounding progress. keep up the good work. lol really tom then please list a few instances in the past year where i was wrong and dont pussy out of it again like you did in the transmission pump thread. i have never seen anyone with a semi-normal psyche that as much an obsession with remembering the errors of others as you but then as a troll you cant be even semi-normal. yes once again tom you wield someones error as a weapon against them . . ..it really must suck to have to live like that. -- budd pres. bush john kerry has changed his position on the iraq war so many times he could debate himself. b.c. and lose. .

good luck to you. hope you get a better dealer than shottenkirk in quincy illinois i had a service engine light come on - on my 2000 1500 ram. the dealership replaced the torque converter and pump. then my truck did - does the same as yours. in three months time they had the truck a week at a time three times. they re-replaced the torque converter and pump. they took off the running boards. jacked it up and tried it. took off the exhaust. and it only does it at a certain speed. 50-55 mph. with light gas peddle. the truck still has the shudder like yours. only now it has a clunk at low speeds. the last time at the dealership the dealer said sorry we cant fix your truck. do a group search on transmission shudder and you will see a lot of us in the same boat. hello all i am the proud new owner of a 1998 1500 ram 4x4. the truck has low miles for the year 71000 and is in very good shape overall. however one issue that i cant seem to resolve on my own is a growling noise while driving. it seems to happen when driving up steady inclines at around 50-51 mph although it has happened at higher speeds too. if i immediately let up on the gas pedal the noise goes away and if i then accelerate through that speed it doesnt seem to happen again until i settle back into that zone we have a few 50 mph roads around here that find me driving in that zone fairly often. at first it sounded like a vibrating cowling or something like that but after hearing it a few times i sense that it is meatier than that almost like gears not quite meshing. it seems to eminate from underneath the truck somewhere behind the cab. does anyone have any ideas on this thanks in advance... .

kerry didnt get it done by david winston -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- email archives print reprint http//www.nypost.com/postopinion/opedcolumnists/29485.htm october 1 2004 -- on the day of the most im portant debate in their political lives president bush was in shirt sleeves consoling florida hurricane victims patting some on the back hugging others and shaking hands with the tired relief workers. john kerry had a manicure. if ever there was a metaphor for the difference between these two candidates and their respective relationships with the american people it was this. as the weekly standards fred barnes put kerrys problem so succinctly last night this is a man who really needs to go bowling. for all the back and forth between the two men the debate did nothing to change that reality. kerrys pontifical performance was light on specifics heavy on criticism and plagued by the inconsistencies that have characterized his positions on iraq for more than a year. while there were few fireworks i suspect swing voters did come away with a few perceptions. first bush knows what hes trying to accomplish. he believes deeply in the rightness of the war in iraq and its centrality to the larger war on terror. his message is the same message voters have heard since 9/11 - we will go on the offensive to fight terrorists wherever they are found to keep this nation safe. on the other hand voters saw kerry continue to struggle to define his position on the war - justifying his latest position which is to call the war a mistake while promising to bring new allies on board to fight for what he terms a grand diversion. he failed totally to make a convincing case for either his strategic vision what there is of it or his so-called four-point tactical plan for winning in iraq which bears a striking resemblance to what the bush administration is already doing. perhaps the most telling moment was the exchange between the two candidates on the issue of north koreas nuclear program. here kerry who harshly criticized bush for rejecting multilateralism in the leadup to the iraq war was equally critical of bushs insistence on maintaining a multilateral approach in dealing with north korea today. consistency is clearly not kerrys strong suit. for all practical purposes kerrys debate performance was little more than a replay of his campaign stump speeches. even his close - i defended this country as a young man and i will defend it as president - was almost verbatim from his acceptance speech. it didnt work then and it wont work now. kerry needed to win this debate decisively. bush not only held his own but in a plainspoken passion showed why voters have more confidence in his leadership in the war on terror. .
