Won't start after rebuild
From : lance carpenter
Q: i finally finished putting together my 1975 dodge powerwagon 360 after rebuilding the engine. its my first rebuild and i have learned alot by going through with it myself. to make the build interesting i did some performance at least i hope upgrades and now i cant light the fire. i ported and polished the heads match-ported the intake manifold and heads replaced the cam intake manifold and stock 2-barrel carburetor with edelbrock performer parts and added headers. i replaced the plugwires plugs rotor distributor cap and fuel filter. i installed the appropriate throttle linkage adapter that is required for chrysler engines on the edelbrock 600 cfm 4-barrel electric choke carb and i know im getting fuel because its visible and occasionally burns off in a mini flame in the carb bowl. i also checked to make sure that i had a spark at the plugs and that checked out ok. the starter turns and the carb is spraying fuel its just not igniting. this seems like a basic problem but its got me stumped. does the addition of these aftermarket parts require an upgrade in the coil ignition or distributor will severely out of sync timing cause this problem i made sure to align the rotor and distributor pointing at the #1 cylinder with it at tdc. i also installed a new timing chain set that had three options for timing and i installed it with no advance or retard. it seems to me like a spark problem but i havent been able to pinpoint it and the occasional flame in the carb bowl seems to indicate some sort of spark. any ideas for this rookie mechanic as you can probably imagine im antsy to get the truck up and runnin! thanks in advance for your help... lance carpenter .

thanks for all the help guys. turns out the distro was 180 out even though i followed all the installation instructions explicitly. the timing chain set even had a picture to follow showing how the dots should line up. someone suggested that with this set up the engine was really at #6 tdc not #1. its easy enough to change so i tried it and it fired! i have definitely learned alot from this rebuild for one thing instruction manuals arent always right and much of it from the generous posts in this group. once again thanks for your assistance! lance carpenter wrote i finally finished putting together my 1975 dodge powerwagon 360 after rebuilding the engine. its my first rebuild and i have learned alot by going through with it myself. to make the build interesting i did some performance at least i hope upgrades and now i cant light the fire. i ported and polished the heads match-ported the intake manifold and heads replaced the cam intake manifold and stock 2-barrel carburetor with edelbrock performer parts and added headers. i replaced the plugwires plugs rotor distributor cap and fuel filter. i installed the appropriate throttle linkage adapter that is required for chrysler engines on the edelbrock 600 cfm 4-barrel electric choke carb and i know im getting fuel because its visible and occasionally burns off in a mini flame in the carb bowl. i also checked to make sure that i had a spark at the plugs and that checked out ok. the starter turns and the carb is spraying fuel its just not igniting. this seems like a basic problem but its got me stumped. does the addition of these aftermarket parts require an upgrade in the coil ignition or distributor will severely out of sync timing cause this problem i made sure to align the rotor and distributor pointing at the #1 cylinder with it at tdc. i also installed a new timing chain set that had three options for timing and i installed it with no advance or retard. it seems to me like a spark problem but i havent been able to pinpoint it and the occasional flame in the carb bowl seems to indicate some sort of spark. any ideas for this rookie mechanic as you can probably imagine im antsy to get the truck up and runnin! thanks in advance for your help... lance carpenter .

number 6 is opposite number 1 in the firing order. both are at tdc but #1 is in valve overlap. it shows the distributor is 180 degrees out of phase. -- budd cochran thanks for all the help guys. turns out the distro was 180 out even though i followed all the installation instructions explicitly. the timing chain set even had a picture to follow showing how the dots should line up. someone suggested that with this set up the engine was really at #6 tdc not #1. its easy enough to change so i tried it and it fired! i have definitely learned alot from this rebuild for one thing instruction manuals arent always right and much of it from the generous posts in this group. once again thanks for your assistance! lance carpenter wrote i finally finished putting together my 1975 dodge powerwagon 360 after rebuilding the engine. its my first rebuild and i have learned alot by going through with it myself. to make the build interesting i did some performance at least i hope upgrades and now i cant light the fire. i ported and polished the heads match-ported the intake manifold and heads replaced the cam intake manifold and stock 2-barrel carburetor with edelbrock performer parts and added headers. i replaced the plugwires plugs rotor distributor cap and fuel filter. i installed the appropriate throttle linkage adapter that is required for chrysler engines on the edelbrock 600 cfm 4-barrel electric choke carb and i know im getting fuel because its visible and occasionally burns off in a mini flame in the carb bowl. i also checked to make sure that i had a spark at the plugs and that checked out ok. the starter turns and the carb is spraying fuel its just not igniting. this seems like a basic problem but its got me stumped. does the addition of these aftermarket parts require an upgrade in the coil ignition or distributor will severely out of sync timing cause this problem i made sure to align the rotor and distributor pointing at the #1 cylinder with it at tdc. i also installed a new timing chain set that had three options for timing and i installed it with no advance or retard. it seems to me like a spark problem but i havent been able to pinpoint it and the occasional flame in the carb bowl seems to indicate some sort of spark. any ideas for this rookie mechanic as you can probably imagine im antsy to get the truck up and runnin! thanks in advance for your help... lance carpenter --- outgoing mail is certified virus free by avg and norton checked by avg anti-virus system http//www.grisoft.com. version 6.0.534 / virus database 329 - release date 10/31/2003 .

here are a few things to try. make sure that your firing order is correct. hook up a timing light and check /set the timing while it is cranking. that will let you know if it is 180 out and will help you get it into correct time. if it still refuses to start check the compression and make sure that the cam is installed correctly and / or that the heads are ok. i was rebuilding a 360 a few years ago and both heads were bad. whoever machined them screwed up just about every seat and i was getting no compression on most cylinders. a quick leak down test confirmed that it was the valve seats and not the cam installed incorrectly. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving i finally finished putting together my 1975 dodge powerwagon 360 after rebuilding the engine. its my first rebuild and i have learned alot by going through with it myself. to make the build interesting i did some performance at least i hope upgrades and now i cant light the fire. i ported and polished the heads match-ported the intake manifold and heads replaced the cam intake manifold and stock 2-barrel carburetor with edelbrock performer parts and added headers. i replaced the plugwires plugs rotor distributor cap and fuel filter. i installed the appropriate throttle linkage adapter that is required for chrysler engines on the edelbrock 600 cfm 4-barrel electric choke carb and i know im getting fuel because its visible and occasionally burns off in a mini flame in the carb bowl. i also checked to make sure that i had a spark at the plugs and that checked out ok. the starter turns and the carb is spraying fuel its just not igniting. this seems like a basic problem but its got me stumped. does the addition of these aftermarket parts require an upgrade in the coil ignition or distributor will severely out of sync timing cause this problem i made sure to align the rotor and distributor pointing at the #1 cylinder with it at tdc. i also installed a new timing chain set that had three options for timing and i installed it with no advance or retard. it seems to me like a spark problem but i havent been able to pinpoint it and the occasional flame in the carb bowl seems to indicate some sort of spark. any ideas for this rookie mechanic as you can probably imagine im antsy to get the truck up and runnin! thanks in advance for your help... lance carpenter .

ok. we all know that dodge had some serious brake problems at one point on their heavy duty trucks. what i want to know is what years to stay away from when looking at used heavy duty cummins. i am willing to look back to the mid-90s to stay within my budget. i also heard that the trucks with the manual transmissions seemed to not have any problems with their brakes. is that true what year did dodge finally fix the problem also did dodge ever come out with a fix for the owners of those particular trucks if not are there people driving around right now in trucks still having to change their brakes every few thousand miles thanks for your input. scott .

trying to find non existent adjusting nuts should keep him busy for quite some time i suspect that you tightened the valve lash down just a tad too much. its a pretty common problem. its easy to check for this. pull the valve covers off. use a feeler gauge and re-adjust all your valve with just a tad of lash use the smallest feeler gauge you have. if you have rail type rockers ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .

or a crack in the dist cap will keep it from starting. jj pj wrote im guessing you either have the timing order fouled up on the dist cap or the timing chain incorrectly installed. i would carefully check how i have the wires in the cap and the proper firing order. pj i finally finished putting together my 1975 dodge powerwagon 360 after rebuilding the engine. its my first rebuild and i have learned alot by going through with it myself. to make the build interesting i did some performance at least i hope upgrades and now i cant light the fire. i ported and polished the heads match-ported the intake manifold and heads replaced the cam intake manifold and stock 2-barrel carburetor with edelbrock performer parts and added headers. i replaced the plugwires plugs rotor distributor cap and fuel filter. i installed the appropriate throttle linkage adapter that is required for chrysler engines on the edelbrock 600 cfm 4-barrel electric choke carb and i know im getting fuel because its visible and occasionally burns off in a mini flame in the carb bowl. i also checked to make sure that i had a spark at the plugs and that checked out ok. the starter turns and the carb is spraying fuel its just not igniting. this seems like a basic problem but its got me stumped. does the addition of these aftermarket parts require an upgrade in the coil ignition or distributor will severely out of sync timing cause this problem i made sure to align the rotor and distributor pointing at the #1 cylinder with it at tdc. i also installed a new timing chain set that had three options for timing and i installed it with no advance or retard. it seems to me like a spark problem but i havent been able to pinpoint it and the occasional flame in the carb bowl seems to indicate some sort of spark. any ideas for this rookie mechanic as you can probably imagine im antsy to get the truck up and runnin! thanks in advance for your help... lance carpenter .
