Wheel Bearing?
From : willywanka
Q: 99 ram 4d 318 auto 40000 miles tires almost new. the other day i noticed a growling sound. when i accelerate it sounds like an airplane taking off prop driven or maybe snow tires on dry pavement. i dont think its in the drive train because it changes with the truck speed. it sounds like it is coming from the back but i feel a buzzing on the floorboards and a little in the steering wheel. dave .

the other day i noticed a growling sound. when i accelerate it sounds like an airplane taking off prop driven or maybe snow tires on dry pavement. i dont think its in the drive train because it changes with the truck speed. could be from the rear differential driveshaft u-joints something caught up in the driveshaft as well as several other possibilities. do you hear it only on acceleration or do you hear it on deceleration as well how fast do you have to be going before you start to hear it raise the rear axle on jackstands have someone operate the truck in gear and carefully walk around the truck trying to pinpoint the noise make sure the transfer case is in 2wd before doing this btw if you dont hear it then its load-related which could still be either a wheel bearing or the axle gears. after driving for about 20 minutes feel for abnormal heat from the rear differential as well as each wheel hub. the hot spot locates the problem. .

it seems it is the rear end. drove the truck for 30 minutes then i felt around the hubs and end of the axles and the only place that was excessively warm was the center of the rear end. is it a big job to change the rearend gear thanks dave the other day i noticed a growling sound. when i accelerate it sounds like an airplane taking off prop driven or maybe snow tires on dry pavement. i dont think its in the drive train because it changes with the truck speed. could be from the rear differential driveshaft u-joints something caught up in the driveshaft as well as several other possibilities. do you hear it only on acceleration or do you hear it on deceleration as well how fast do you have to be going before you start to hear it raise the rear axle on jackstands have someone operate the truck in gear and carefully walk around the truck trying to pinpoint the noise make sure the transfer case is in 2wd before doing this btw if you dont hear it then its load-related which could still be either a wheel bearing or the axle gears. after driving for about 20 minutes feel for abnormal heat from the rear differential as well as each wheel hub. the hot spot locates the problem. .

yes it is. and it is probably the bearings that are failing. carrier bearings are easy but pinion are a pita. if you catch it soon enough you can probably save the gears but until you open the rear up and take a look... -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving it seems it is the rear end. drove the truck for 30 minutes then i felt around the hubs and end of the axles and the only place that was excessively warm was the center of the rear end. is it a big job to change the rearend gear thanks dave the other day i noticed a growling sound. when i accelerate it sounds like an airplane taking off prop driven or maybe snow tires on dry pavement. i dont think its in the drive train because it changes with the truck speed. could be from the rear differential driveshaft u-joints something caught up in the driveshaft as well as several other possibilities. do you hear it only on acceleration or do you hear it on deceleration as well how fast do you have to be going before you start to hear it raise the rear axle on jackstands have someone operate the truck in gear and carefully walk around the truck trying to pinpoint the noise make sure the transfer case is in 2wd before doing this btw if you dont hear it then its load-related which could still be either a wheel bearing or the axle gears. after driving for about 20 minutes feel for abnormal heat from the rear differential as well as each wheel hub. the hot spot locates the problem. .

is it a big job to change the rearend gear yes and its not somethng you can do yourself. sorry to be the bearer of bad but at worst case youre looking at about $800-$1000 if the whole differential needs to be replaced. like tbone said it could be something less drastic but you wont know that until someone takes a look at it and even if it is something less than a whole diff replacement it wont be for much longer if you keep driving it. .

friends i have a 1996 ram pu 1500 4x4 v8 5.9l with only about 57000 miles. when i start the engine and while shes at idle there is intermittently a loud tick or snap from the engine. it seems to happen more when the outside air temperature is cold although when the engine warms she still does it. i do not hear it when im driving even with the radio off. if you sit quietly at a stop light with the window open and radio off you can hear it. there may be several quiet snaps/ticks; then maybe a loud one; followed by some quiet time ; then more; etc. i really cant seem to come up with any type of rhythm except that it seems to do it more when the outside air is cold but can also do it in the summertime. i dont think it has anything to do with expasion as the engine heats. is engine knock or ping if so what should i do about it if not what might it be thanks. steve .

if he has the 8 1/4 or 8 3/8 or 9 1/4 half ton truck the new mopar action magazine has a story about the whole job complete with pictures is it a big job to change the rearend gear yes and its not somethng you can do yourself. sorry to be the bearer of bad but at worst case youre looking at about $800-$1000 if the whole differential needs to be replaced. like tbone said it could be something less drastic but you wont know that until someone takes a look at it and even if it is something less than a whole diff replacement it wont be for much longer if you keep driving it. ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .

if he has the 8 1/4 or 8 3/8 or 9 1/4 half ton truck the new mopar action magazine has a story about the whole job complete with pictures understood - but unless he has foot-pound and inch-pound torque wrenches a dial indicator a bearing puller a big honkin impact gun or the special pinion yoke holddown tool or the means to make it himself the axle adjuster nut tool or the means to make it himself and the skill to use them all... well... .

exactly why i mentioned the story. so he could see for himself what is involved. you know there are some people who cant understand why it should cost $800 to $1000 just to change a couple gears g understood - but unless he has foot-pound and inch-pound torque wrenches a dial indicator a bearing puller a big honkin impact gun or the special pinion yoke holddown tool or the means to make it himself the axle adjuster nut tool or the means to make it himself and the skill to use them all... well... ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .

what i was figuring on doing was to take out the gears and have the new bearings installed. because i dont have presses dial indicators or any of the other special tools. i do understand why auto repair costs so much.the cost of special tools and the knowledge to use them properly. dave exactly why i mentioned the story. so he could see for himself what is involved. you know there are some people who cant understand why it should cost $800 to $1000 just to change a couple gears g understood - but unless he has foot-pound and inch-pound torque wrenches a dial indicator a bearing puller a big honkin impact gun or the special pinion yoke holddown tool or the means to make it himself the axle adjuster nut tool or the means to make it himself and the skill to use them all... well... ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .

those tools mentioned have nothing to do with the actual bearing replacement which is the easy part. well with the exception of the bearing puller of course .

willywanka dodgeram@whatnot.com wrote what i was figuring on doing was to take out the gears and have the new bearings installed. how are you planning on putting the gears back in by reversing the steps i use to get them out youve already said that you dont have the necessary tools dial indicator torque wrenches etc. so re-assembly is likely to either not occur or be done wrong resulting in back to square one or worse. those tools mentioned have nothing to do with the actual bearing replacement which is the easy part. .

while that sounds logical it is not going to work. the gears must mesh properly and that involves correct contact patterns proper spacing and bearing pre-loads. this is what involves the special tools and skills not just pressing bearings on the diff and pinion and bolting it back together. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving by reversing the steps i use to get them out what i was figuring on doing was to take out the gears and have the new bearings installed. how are you planning on putting the gears back in .

i read that article and while it is informative it is just about replacing the diff and has nothing to do with replacing the pinion or its bearings or the seals. thats too bad considering they did by the full bearing/seal kit and the are the tricky and more difficult things to replace. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving if he has the 8 1/4 or 8 3/8 or 9 1/4 half ton truck the new mopar action magazine has a story about the whole job complete with pictures is it a big job to change the rearend gear yes and its not somethng you can do yourself. sorry to be the bearer of bad but at worst case youre looking at about $800-$1000 if the whole differential needs to be replaced. like tbone said it could be something less drastic but you wont know that until someone takes a look at it and even if it is something less than a whole diff replacement it wont be for much longer if you keep driving it. ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .
