What is in a cat ?
From : chris
Q: when changing the cat on my 94 i had cut the pipe directly behind the cat and wanted to run it to see what it sounded like. how much sound suppression did the cat do. well the old cat was bad and a bunch of yellow smoke blew out and little bits of honeycomb white junk. long story short.......... even though the garage door was open i breathed a bunch of this crap and ended up in the er. spent several days in ic. just what is the chemical make up of this stuff the er doc did not know. it effected my muscle mass and they wont know if there was permanent damage for weeks now. they keep taking blood. they said my blood work looked like that of someone that had just run a marathon. whatever that meant. .

the cat itself is made of a ceramic substrate the honeycomb stuff coated with platinum which is a noble metal which shouldnt cause you any harm. the ceramic material which is basically silica or a derivative is not to good for the ol lungs. the contaminants as yofuri pointed out arent too good for the lungs either. chryco service manager member sae when changing the cat on my 94 i had cut the pipe directly behind the cat and wanted to run it to see what it sounded like. how much sound suppression did the cat do. well the old cat was bad and a bunch of yellow smoke blew out and little bits of honeycomb white junk. long story short.......... even though the garage door was open i breathed a bunch of this crap and ended up in the er. spent several days in ic. just what is the chemical make up of this stuff the er doc did not know. it effected my muscle mass and they wont know if there was permanent damage for weeks now. they keep taking blood. they said my blood work looked like that of someone that had just run a marathon. whatever that meant. the sulphur in the fuel is absorbed in the catalyst as sulphur trioxide and released as hydrogen sulphide when the mixture is rich rotten egg odor. sulphur trioxide is nasty stuff for the respiratory tract and lungs. see for instance http//members.rogers.com/acidmanual3/propertiesso3.htm rick .
