hi it sounds like a wheel bearing. there is no side pressure on your carrier bearings. if you decide to take it apart you should have a good torque wrench to 250 lb. for the pinion nut and a good in lbs torque wrench for the preload. it sould be around 14-35 in lbs of resistence at the pinion/yoke nut. you may also have a collapsible pinion bearing spacer that should be replaced at every loosening or replacement. i know this sounds stupid but a bad or weak rim can cause noise also. down the axle tubes is the access to your ring gear/carrier bearings. the adjustments on the bearings dictate if the lash is correct for the gears. i welded on a nut to both sides to a steel tube about 4 long that fit the adjuster so that i could put a wrench and torque wrench to set preload. i think it should have about .015 at the ring/pinion gap at the tightest spot. try to move your yoke back and forth to check for any movement. there should not be any. there should also be some resistance when turning. your specs should have every thing you need to know. let me know if i can help. good luck. ps use blue locktight for the pinion nut. you should have plenty of time to adjust before the locktight dries. jessie dick wrote i replaced all the bearings in my dakota axle 2 years ago now its making some noise again mostly on a right turn. i suspect the left carrier bearing any thoughts i didnt have a adjusting. spanner or other tool or torsion bar to adj. preload properly when i did it before. what year torsion bar will fit the adjusting nut through the axle tube its a 97 8 1/4 29 spline with posi. dick .
