i have a 1998 dodge durango 4x4 5.9l and have an issue that the dealer blew me off over. i always seem to have warmer to hot air blowing when the vents are set to outside air. it can be 55 degrees outside and the vent air feels like 90 degrees. i brought it into the dealer and they told me all the vents are opening properly but where is the cooler outside air sounds like your diverter door is stuck. not sure specifically about the durangos but i believe in 98 the diverter door is operated by a stepper motor rather than mechanically operated like earlier vehicles. its possible the motor is shot. .

tom thanks is there anyway for me to check and verify. the rest of the system appears to work my ac is good and the heater section works it is just the outside vent air. the dealer tried to tell me it was caused by the heating of the engine compartment but when it is 57 outside i expect some cooler air. -- rich dibenedetto university of phoenix online email rmdibened@email.uophx.edu i have a 1998 dodge durango 4x4 5.9l and have an issue that the dealer blew me off over. i always seem to have warmer to hot air blowing when the vents are set to outside air. it can be 55 degrees outside and the vent air feels like 90 degrees. i brought it into the dealer and they told me all the vents are opening properly but where is the cooler outside air sounds like your diverter door is stuck. not sure specifically about the durangos but i believe in 98 the diverter door is operated by a stepper motor rather than mechanically operated like earlier vehicles. its possible the motor is shot. .

thanks is there anyway for me to check and verify. i dont know the specifics on the durango but if its anything like on the rams the motor is located on the back side of the heater/ac unit which has to be removed to access it. removing this is a big job - requires the dash to come out the a/c to be evacuated etc. if you really wanted to you could bypass the heater core and verify that you then get cool air blowing out the vents. that will just about prove its the blend air door thats not operating. of course theres practically no chance that its anything but a stuck/non-functioning blend air door so going through the process of bypassing the heater core is a mostly unnecessary step. i take it theres no change in air temperature with the temp. knob at full cold vs. full hot or is there .

i do actually get variation when in the cold position the air is not overheated and gets hotter when moved to the heat sector its just that at the coldest setting it is no where near as cool as it should be a real pain in the neck during warmer days. -- rich dibenedetto university of phoenix online email rmdibened@email.uophx.edu thanks is there anyway for me to check and verify. i dont know the specifics on the durango but if its anything like on the rams the motor is located on the back side of the heater/ac unit which has to be removed to access it. removing this is a big job - requires the dash to come out the a/c to be evacuated etc. if you really wanted to you could bypass the heater core and verify that you then get cool air blowing out the vents. that will just about prove its the blend air door thats not operating. of course theres practically no chance that its anything but a stuck/non-functioning blend air door so going through the process of bypassing the heater core is a mostly unnecessary step. i take it theres no change in air temperature with the temp. knob at full cold vs. full hot or is there .

i researched this soon after i got my 99 d and all i found was defect in the blend air door and no factory fixes. it does get worse when you are idling for a while and the heat builds up in the engine compartment. so i installed a ball valve in the heater hose going to the heater which i close in the warmer weather. i didnt want to tear apart the heater box. bruce i do actually get variation when in the cold position the air is not overheated and gets hotter when moved to the heat sector its just that at the coldest setting it is no where near as cool as it should be a real pain in the neck during warmer days.
