UPDATE: 99 ram grinding noise
From : mac davis
Q: finally got the ram back last week!! the late shift to 3rd wasnt the speed sensor they needed to rebuild a valve body and separator plate what ever they are the wailing noise was a little tougher.. i thought it was wheel bearing the tech thought u-joints... they inspected the u-joints and they showed some wear so they replaced them... quieted down a bit but didnt solve the problem.. nice having new parts though i asked them to check the rear differential thanks tom and they found metal in the pan and the oil was badly burned... and pinion o-ring damage.. they replaced bearings seals cup drive spacers pinion nut and a bunch of small items and billed for sealant cleaner & lubricant... they called that a rear diff. overhaul.. total invoice was a bit over $1800 plus tax... our price was $100... sure am glad the wife wanted that extended warranty!! towed the trailer on a 300 mile round trip over the weekend... mostly freeway with a few small grades... the truck did well and was so much quieter!! thanks again to all that helped diagnose/guess what my problem was... mac .

ill call them today and see whats up... my guess is that its ok as log as they warrant the work the work and the gears. the heat simply draws the hardness out of the gears and they wear quickly after that politics the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich. .

the late shift to 3rd wasnt the speed sensor they needed to rebuild a valve body and separator plate what ever they are wow - theyre good. never knew you could rebuild a separator plate i asked them to check the rear differential thanks tom and they found metal in the pan and the oil was badly burned... and pinion o-ring damage.. pinion seal maybe... no o-rings in there. if the seal were bad youd have gear oil dripping down the front of the diff. they replaced bearings seals cup drive spacers pinion nut and a bunch of small items and billed for sealant cleaner & lubricant... they called that a rear diff. overhaul.. yep - pretty much replaced everything inside the case. fun job btw - i hope two of the small items were a pinion gear and a ring gear... total invoice was a bit over $1800 plus tax... our price was $100... sure am glad the wife wanted that extended warranty!! sounds like it just paid for itself. good deal... .

ill call them today and see whats up... my guess is that its ok as log as they warrant the work maybe maybe not. like red said the gears could have been weakened. dealer warranty on repair work is 12 months/12000 miles or the remainder of your factory or extended warranty whichever comes first. .
