UPDATE 5 on the Dodge pickup whining noise

From : ignoramus16919

Q: on mon 2 oct 2006 111903 -0400 roy roy@home.net wrote just spoke to a friend of my wife who is a car mechanic who makes money by fixing cars. he mentioned that it could well be a tranny problem. he advised me that once shit starts on chryslers that it only gets worse and advised me to not do any repairs and to get rid of this truck as soon as possible. i am inclined to do just that. i and i bet he knows somebody who will take it off your hands too. nope he has been very good to us. he is a good person and never made any money from us in any way. never did any work on our vehicles or facilitated any purchases. my wife knew him for a very long time. i .

do you know what kind coolant came with truck---regular green or ext-life orange/pink. im getting ready to flush/replace coolant after almost 4 years but not too many miles but the dodge shop doesnt know for sure what they put in last time. ive got a 97. i use the stuff that is compatible with everything in all of our vehicles. simplifies what i have to keep on hand. .

when i hit overdrive under moderate acceleration i get a slight vibration and the shift lever starts jumping back and forth for a few seconds. if i ease off the accelerator the vibration and shift-lever jumping goes away immediately. are you sure its when you go into od or is it when the torque converter locks up next time once the vibration starts dont let off the acclerator but tap the brake pedal with your left foot lightly. this will cause the torque converter to unlock. see if the vibration goes away. i was thinking u-joints. sound right to you if its u-joints it should be happening at a certain driveshaft speed regardless of what gear the transmission is in. try locking out od and acclerating to the same speed when the vibration normally occurs. see if it happens regardless of which gear youre in 3rd vs. od looks like i have 3 u-joints and a pillow-block bearing between the transfer case and rear differential. can i just drop the rearmost u-joint and then remove the rear shaft from the pillow-block bearing do i have to remove the pillow-block bearing to remove the front shaft you can disassemble the driveshaft at the slip joint to the rear of the center carrier bearing - it will entail removing the metal strap that holds the rubber boot on. the bearing is pressed on to the front portion of the shaft and isnt easily removeable. usually you just unbolt the driveshaft from the rear differential lay it on the ground then unbolt the carrier bearing and pull the whole driveshaft rearward so the front slip yoke disengages. drain some fluid from the transfer case first or itll leak out when you remove the driveshaft. you may find it easier to work with if you split the driveshaft into two. if you do this be sure to mark the relationship between the two pieces the splines may be keyed - they may not so you can re-assemble it the same way. dont worry about the metal strap on the dust boot - a plastic zip tie will work just as well. .

the key is overinflated. the tires are not over-inflated; they are inflated to spec. on tue 3 oct 2006 140914 -0400 roy roy@home.net wrote your idea is sound but will be harder on equipment because of the gearing change. another way to save gas is to buy load range e tires. these tires can be inflated to 80 psi and then you will have less rolling resistance with the same gearing. i believe the 80 pounds is when the truck is loaded to its max. operating at 80 pounds m/t isnt going to put much rubber on the road and the truck will ride hard as hell imo. roy while it is true that 80 psi is required for max load capacity there is benifits from increase average presure from reduced rolling resistance which can improve mpg. the only real draw back is a stiffer ride on a bumpy road. tread design and profile plays a roll here too. a 83 series tires like a 235/83/r16 e will have less drag and rolling resistance than a 70 or 75 seris. it is also about 1 inch taller than a 245/75/16 too. finailly the tread design itself plays a roll too. a smooth tire with little or no cleats will consume less power than one with a meaty tread. look at a semi tire sometimes genrally unless you are carry enough weight to need it there is little or no gain in mpg with pressure over 55 to 60 psi so even a d range tire running at or near max pressue will roll nicely with a smooth tread. ----------------- theassholeman.com well well look what crawled under the door. tired of spreading false info at the other group and decided to drag your ass back here first you have a few questions to answer from the last time you were here. you remember them dont ya or are you here for another reason i figure there is another reason. your sig looks good. oh you didnt address the stopping issue with over inflated tires. care to take a shot .

one more update. i went to a dealer today. drove it with a mechanic etc and he raised the pickup and listened with stethoscope. the problem is rear end related and he will replace the pinion bearing and other internal bearings. in his opinion the gears are fine. the cost of this including cost of the diagnostic which they waived is $1070 and i decided to let them do it and instead i will resell something on ebay to make up the money. the labor charge is $600 the rest are parts. i .

From : andrew vk3bfa

bro thats exactly the question i had when the mechanic asked me what was in it. he said it still could be a problem. i didnt relieve believe that so i spent a few minutes searching the web for discussions of mixing coolants.....and seems alot of people agree with him. but my searching did not come up with any hint of what coolant came with my truck although i tend to think its regular/green from what people are saying. bro if you are going to flush it what difference does it make what was in it before roy .

stock size is 245/75-16 if i go up a size to lets say 245/85-16s will i get better gas mileage im not looking for much but if i have to change the tires why not move up to a size that might help. i dont tow i just carry tools and sometimes some job site materials concrete gravel etc. i know that increasing the unsprung wheel weight will hurt mpg so i want to go taller not wider i would love to buy lighter wheels but i think that would get too expensive. if you think otherwise please tell me where to get cheap light wheels still load d or e though. from http//www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html diameters stock is 30.5 in with 245/85-16s im running 32.4 in 6.3% increase and with toyo tires i gain 1 pound with 255/85-16s im running 33.1 8.5% increase - limited tire choice. i could also go with 17s they are all over ebay but i think ill gain more unsprung weight. of course im stuck with highway tires but thats fine. this is a work truck so i dont take it off road. i know the saying you bought a truck accept your mpg im not crazy about improving my mileage but when i have to replace a part i always try and upgrade it as best as possible. btw what highway tires do you recommend thanks .
