Two questions about my new Durango

From : nute

Q: i just bought a 2003 durango r/t and have two so far questions gas mileage i am almost freaking out because i am getting like 9 mpg in the city. i know its the 5.9 liter guzzler but the sticker says 12. is there a break-in period after which it will get better please say yes. dashboard opening there is a small recess in the dash between the driver and passenger to the right of the climate controls. the same place on the left of the climate controls holds the awd/4hi/4lo switch. it seems there is some switch gauge or option i dont have that is supposed to go in there. anyone know what thats for it certainly cant hold anything even change slides right out. thanks .

just dont attack when you get teased a bit. teasing is common in here but then there are also a few that just are trying to achieve a personal goals of becoming hemorrhoids. btw this thread also shows why sometimes you see replies wanting more info. budd hodad wrote thanks budd. i do appreciate this answer. hd pick on my friends you pick on me. i back my friends up i dont turn my back on them. and you didnt say it had done it from day one. the old spicer three speed in 50s and back gm products whined like a ex-wife in first and reverse. the angle the gear teeth were hobbed at was set for easy shifts and strength not quiet operation. your trans is probably hobbed for strength which puts the teeth too square. budd hodad wrote budd if you read my second post i said you had at least tried to help my bitch was with red. so whos thin skinned now then you tell me to shove it up mine. you can do the same thank you very much. hd p.s. i couldnt have screwed anything up as this is how it was from day one. hey hodad ive been in small engine repair for many years and youd be surprised at the number of supposedly educated people that dont ever check the oil in their brand new lawn mower. . .how well do you think they check their cars and trucks you wouldnt be the first to never have had it checked ok get over it. red was only teasing you a bit. i asked the question to cover your butt for you just in case and eliminate the possibility you had screwed up the transmission. sheeesh! so third gear whine its probably the gear you use most around town 35 mph or less and when you do finally pull out on the interstate you either shift down to it from 4th or just kick the gas in third to start accelerating to highway speed depending on your speed and the gear youre in at the time. i used to also drive civilian truck some and and trained dump truck drivers for the in national guard. every bob-tailed rig with a 5 speed main box had that whine every army 5 ton dump with the spicer 5 speed had it and the reason i gave above is why. your truck is just essentially a smaller version of a bob-tail truck. you just dont have a two speed axle to screw up as well. now go shove it up yours. budd hodad wrote hey red butt i didnt ask for smartass replies. fyi i have thoroughly read the owners manual. i know how to check the fluid levels and i have. i asked a simple question and you give an ignorant reply. at least budd tried to be helpful. my guess is that neither of you have any experience with this transmission so obviously my original post didnt pertain to you. hd p.s. the owners manual was handed to me in the nifty vinyl holder that holds all the other maintenance and warranty info not in plastic wrap like the twinkies and ho hos you have for lunch every day. dollars to doughnuts the owners manual is still wrapped in plastic in the glove box have you checked the lubricant level budd a dyslexic man walks into a bra. .
