Q: i have an 03 ram 1500 quad cab. one of the reasons i jumped on this truck was the infinity stereo system - this one is a seven speaker system. it seems that i have one speaker in each door and three mounted on the horizontal portion of the dash one small one in center near the windshield. i was planning on going in to the dealer w/ a complaint about the speaker in the right front door. based on what i am reading here i should just go to the local infinity dealer and replace the speakers in each of the doors. i am trying to understand the earlier statement concerning what each speaker does. based on a seven speaker system could you please advise me on what capability each door speaker should have for this truck. i had assumed that i had a little more ass in the amp section than the indash system guess i will have to go look at an amp. i mainly listen to classical and jazz with a nice dose of old/new rock and roll. clear clean crisp audio is what i am after. any advise would be helpful. i will say that i do not want to remove the indash unit i like the idea of keeping the oem unit. oh what the heck does raz and hu stand for thanks marshall miles unknown@unlisted.com wrote in joe wrote compared to an alpine sure the oem hu sucks. youre at least doubling the power and cutting the distortion at least in half. but op wants to keep the oem hu so his best solution is to replace the speakers which also suck big time. my point was that i believe that the majority of the lousy sound is from the head unit and not the speakers. iows if youre gonna replace only one or the other....replace the head unit! personally i think this is debatable. it would be interesting albeit subjective to see what results in better overall sound quality not volume changing the hu or changing the speakers. for me the advantages to keeping the oem hu are a tapes plus cds b steering wheel controls and c theft protection. joe black 03 dakota 5.9 r/t cc calypso green 93 mustang 5.0 lx hatch with a few goodies .

stephen harding harding@cs.umass.edu wrote in from experience i disagree that fwd is better. ive driven both for years and i prefer rwd. i have to agree. with rwd if ya know what you are doing you can move the rear of the car with just a tap of the gas. you can avoid a accident or at least lessen it. with fwd you are screwed. i dont deny that fwd is decent in the snow. my wife drives a eldo but it is a damn heavy fwd. also it has blizzaks on it which improved it by about 75% over the factory tires. but get into a slide and you are pretty much along for the ride not so with rwd. but now you are assuming that everyone has the skills to put a car into a controlled skid under a panic situation and that is a complete load of bull. most people in that situation just hammer the brake and in that case front or rear wheel drive makes no difference. yes a skilled driver can make a rwd move in the snow but an inexperienced driver can easily do it with a fwd. as for the tire sizes and the t/a my wifes intrepid rt has the same size tires as my 80 t/a and it has no problems in the snow with them. so we agree it all comes down to the driver. it always comes down to the driver so yes we agree on that. but that doesnt change the fact that a fwd is easier to control and operate in the snow. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

on thu 05 feb 2004 183521 -0600 ramman@dodgecity.cc wrote i wouldnt do it. as the previous poster mentioned the two *must be* identically sized electrically - not necessarily physically but likely would be if the electrical parameters are identically matched. lead-acid batteries most batteries for that matter do not play well together when bridged together in parallel + to + and - to - together they will also present an unexpected load to your alternator and voltage regulator. i profess no expertise but i am an industrial electrician manufacturing automation and i know just enough about dc power to not tamper with the design of a vehicle electrical system. if you really want two batteries you need to provide some high current i.e. 400-amp steering diodes for isolation so the batteries can each service the working load and each receive a charge more or less separately without being able to see each other electrically and cross-charging or cross-discharging each other. then of course theres that nagging little problem with the 0.6v average forward voltage drop across each diode. your 12v electrical system is all of a sudden an 11.4v electrical system. if you use a relay the diode drop problem goes away and you never load the two batteries together. second battery is generally there to run accessories - not start the truck. in the start position only one battery is connected to the starter unless you need to use it as a booster in which case you can energise the relal/solenoid switch to connect the second battery to the starter fords been doing it that way on the camper specials for years. i have run with a deep cycle house battery and a standard sli battery charged in parallel many times with no problem with this setup. the charging system will provide the voltage called for by the lowest charged battery of the pair so overcharging is not an issue.at least it never has been for me. 4 vehicles set up that way over the last 20 plus years. mygodisthereanamenotchosen@yahoo.com writes the cost isnt the issue imo. its using 2 batteries that are not used to being hooked to eachother. if youre going to run 2 batteries then should be a matched pair in brand age and cca. otherwise things could go badly and end up costing you 2 more new batteries. ive come up with a second battery. im wondering about the cost of installing the second battery setup in my 99 ram. i know there are stock parts available. ken .

please see http//inlinediesel.com/forum/topic.asptopicid=617 and give me your feedback and advice. thanks okay - several things here. yes pulling power is a good thing - so is stopping power. the 3rd gen rams have some great brakes - however id definitely want an exhaust brake when pulling that kind of load. your trucks computer isnt exhaust-brake-aware and an upgrade though promised by dc isnt available yet. since you asked about turning up the engines power we can assume youre cool with throwing caution to the wind and assuming warranty responsibilities. with that id suggest some mild tranny upgrades. im an ats guy when it comes to transmissions others have their preferences but ive flogged the ever-lovin crap out of mine without much of a problem. if you go with their torque converter imo the only weak link left in the factory 48re setup and valve body along with their ats commander may have changed the name of that - the electronic controller youll have what you need to run an exhaust brake. their box can talk to your exhaust brake controller and make sure the brake disengages if/when the tcc unlocks though with their control box you can maintain lockup all the way down to 4mph if you so desired - its adjustable. in the ats world thats their stage 3 or option 3 selection for about $2700. add another $1000 for an exhaust brake. id also throw in a few hundred $$$ for the mag-hytec double-deep tranny pan. it provides better cooling and more fluid capacity which is also better for cooling. for the power side i still think tst is the best in the business. their latest revision of their powermax box has plenty of bells and whistles... two user adjustable fueling curves both low-rpm and high-rpm curves user-adjustable fuel pressure i dont recommend going too much over stock pressure if at all - but the options there user-adjustable timing really only useful if using it in conjunction with other boxes but hey - its there and built-in protection defueling based on egts and boost pressure. theres also a built-in cool-down timer you can turn the ignition off and lock up the truck - itll continue to idle until a preset temp. or time limit then shut the truck off. it gives you digital egt and boost gauges a rail pressure gauge useful if youre going to muck with fuel pressure and comes with four different base programs three performance programs one fuel economy program. for $900 its all youll ever need in the way of boxes or programmers - good for anywhere from stock to 600hp at the wheels and i got the dyno sheets to prove it! now you cant get that kind of power just by throwing this box on there well you could but without a better intake bigger/free-flow exhaust and larger turbo youd melt the engine in short order but the point is its got the ability to deliver. with the added power i dont think a gear swap would be necessary. with a manual i might think differently but the auto gives you a little more flexibility in that area. in addition id definitely recommend a trans temp gauge. they go for about $55. i also recommend installing the sensor in the return line from the cooler. if youve got a flaring tool and get some an fittings you can do this yourself - otherwise i recommend a $75 replacement cooler line from mass diesel that has the port already installed. so for about $5k you can set your truck up to pull and stop your trailer comfortably. yeah a 6spd auto would be nice... the 6.7l engine would be nice... but i dont think youre going to do better than $5k on a trade-in. .

i did this with my factory ordered 2000 ram and it is really interesting. if i remember right you have to call the dc factory info number and they will give you the production build number once it is started this can take a few weeks to get going but once you have the production number you can get daily or weekly updates by phone or on the internet you can follow your truck from the start of assembly to the dealer. i knew before the dealer called when it was going to arrive went down and watched them unload it off the carrier. everyone should do this at least once it is a real kick. i am going to wait a couple more years and order one of the new 600hds. if you havent ordered yet you might want to consider that baby it is going to be a serious heavy duty ass haulin rig perfect for a large slidein or a big fith wheel. joe .
