To much clutch play?

Q: howdy all i just moved to the cold barren lands of red deer alberta and i took my mothers 1988 dodge ram 50 for a drive tonite. the clutch was so bad i could barely drive it. i had to let it up all the way for the it to catch and shift. is there an adjustment i can change without taking to a garage. i know a fair amount about vehicles so. thanx .
