thanks for the info guys. i used a gps to help determine the under read on my odometer. wondering if the fix is a simple gear head change on the end of speedo drive cable fred fearless fred wrote hi all! purchased a 2001 dakota club cab sport with the 4.7l and awd. it has 16 inch aluminum wheels with p265r70 tires. speedo is under reading by about 10 per cent. does anyone know if 16 inch wheels an option on these trucks any info greatly appreciated. tia fred mine came with 265/70-16. when i bought tires last time that size wasnt available. i got 275/70-16. speedometer seems pretty accurate. i havnt checked it against a gps. but timed across a measured 10 mile stretch seems to be pretty accurate. -------- .bob 2006 fxdi hot rod 2008 mustang coupe 2001 dodge dakota sport qc 5.9/4x4/3.92 1965 ffr cobra - 427w efi damn fast. .

so i guess im showing my age ... used to be slipping a different gear on the end of the speedo drive cable at the transmission end of the cable was the fix for this. gathering that the speedo is now driven by a sensor did a calc on a web site ...seems that the program i have was set for the standard tire size on standard cab two wheel drive. still have a 10% error ... so i have to see a dealer to get this fixed when will we be able to do this ourselves with a laptop pc fred on sun 28 sep 2008 225823 -0400 fearless fred fjxallen@shaw.ca wrote i went through this with my service manager at cryco and he advised against it.. he said that it would cost a minimum 1 hour labor to reprogram the computer and it would make it close.. he said that 3% was already fairly close so save the bucks.. in our case we know that if it indicates 66 were doing slightly under 70 so were not really in ticket territory.. thanks for the info guys. i used a gps to help determine the under read on my odometer. wondering if the fix is a simple gear head change on the end of speedo drive cable fred fearless fred wrote hi all! purchased a 2001 dakota club cab sport with the 4.7l and awd. it has 16 inch aluminum wheels with p265r70 tires. speedo is under reading by about 10 per cent. does anyone know if 16 inch wheels an option on these trucks any info greatly appreciated. tia fred mine came with 265/70-16. when i bought tires last time that size wasnt available. i got 275/70-16. speedometer seems pretty accurate. i havnt checked it against a gps. but timed across a measured 10 mile stretch seems to be pretty accurate. -------- .bob 2006 fxdi hot rod 2008 mustang coupe 2001 dodge dakota sport qc 5.9/4x4/3.92 1965 ffr cobra - 427w efi damn fast. mac please remove splinters before emailing .

gathering that the speedo is now driven by a sensor yep... the pcm learns vehicle speed by getting a signal from the abs computer which is reading a signal from a hall effect sensor called the vehicle speed sensor mounted on the top of the rear differential. next to the ring gear is a tone ring and thats what excites the sensor. the pcm is then programmed with a value referred to as the pinion factor. this is a number that when multiplied by the pulse-per-second value of the signal coming from the abs computer translates into distance travelled. its essentially an expression of the tire diameter because speed is measured by the amount of rotation at the rear axle gear ratios either transmission or differential dont come in to play. still have a 10% error ... so i have to see a dealer to get this fixed either that or rent the specialized scan tool and do it yourself. rental runs $150. a dealer wouldnt charge you that much. when will we be able to do this ourselves with a laptop pc probably never. there are some programmers in the aftermarket that in addition to letting you tune for more performance also let you mess around with the pinion factor setting. however these are bought - not rented and are at least 3-4 times the cost of the tool rental and 7-8 times what a dealer would should charge you for this. .

tom lawrence wrote can you elaborate on the specialized scan tool ... what would i be asking for its called a drb iii and its a proprietary tool that costs about $6k to buy http//millerspecialtools.spx.com/pdf/dc05-157.pdf or $150 to rent for 3 days from techauthority.com the genisys will also adjust pinion factor. $1500.00 or so for one on the bay. they are dropping in price because otc has come out with an even neater toy... -- steve w. .
