The Light is Off!

Q: suddenly without warning denny exclaimed 9/12/2007 756 pm for those of you whove been around for a while you might remember that the check engine light on my 2001 dakota has been on for a couple of years complaining of a small evaporative emissions leak. replaced the gas cap to no avail and ignored it until now. per another recent post i had the truck in to replace a manifold gasket only to find that the exhaust manifold itself was warped. that was machined and replaced the 02 sensor also replaced and in the same area the mechanic found my leak - a 1 section of hose that had cracked through. must have been on the underside cause i inspected with my non-mechanic eyes that stuff a while back. so now for the first time in ages the light is off. and when i open the gas cap it goes phsssst! again. life is good. my truck is happy. im happy! how pathetic is that jmc does that mean youre gonna bake a bunch of chocolate chip cookies and mail them to everybody in the group vbg denny uh.... no. .

these trucks have a weakly designed rear differential for some reason. my 98 dakota a friends 99 ram 1500 and another friends 01 ram 1500 - all required pinion bearing replacements before 90k miles. all 3 of us ended up having a dealership do the work and 3 of us were screwed for an entire rear end rebuild. the only piece that was bad was the pinion bearing which could have been replaced without replacing everything else at a significantly lower price. never towed anything and always kept fluid levels clean and up to proper level. just my $0.02 worth. hello all i am by no means a mechanic however i would like some input before i go to a mechanic to get my truck checked out. i am not totally convinced that my issue is 100% a transmission issue however signs do point to the area. when accelerating starting at approximately 40 mph and 1500-3000 rpm i hear a pretty pronounced rattling kinda like a can with a couple of bolts shaken... as best i can tell it seems to be coming from the middle left area under the truck most likely close to the tranny. the noise has gotten a bit worse over the last couple of weeks. it seems i can avoide the noise completely by traveling at less than 50 mph on a slight incline and i dont seem to hear anything when accelerating on a decline. i dont hear the rattle while driving the back roads only when on the freeway. the noise seems happen mostly when more force is needed to move the truck on an incline at 40 ++ mph and higher rpm. driving in od seems to reduce the noise a bit as well. the truck shifts just fine and im not noticing any performance degradation however i am very concerned about the noise. also to note is that the rear diff seems to be leaking more than usual i am planning on topping it off to see if that helps since i cant be 100% certain that the noise is coming from the middle left might be coming from the rear diff i doubt it though. any inputs would be greatly appreciated.. thanks -tim i was having similar issues and it was the u clamp between the cat and the muffler that clamps the pipe tight where it joins that was not tight enough causing rattle. .

sounds lke the flex plate flywheel to torque converter bolts are loose. check before the thing self destructs. steve hello all i am by no means a mechanic however i would like some input before i go to a mechanic to get my truck checked out. i am not totally convinced that my issue is 100% a transmission issue however signs do point to the area. when accelerating starting at approximately 40 mph and 1500-3000 rpm i hear a pretty pronounced rattling kinda like a can with a couple of bolts shaken... as best i can tell it seems to be coming from the middle left area under the truck most likely close to the tranny. the noise has gotten a bit worse over the last couple of weeks. it seems i can avoide the noise completely by traveling at less than 50 mph on a slight incline and i dont seem to hear anything when accelerating on a decline. i dont hear the rattle while driving the back roads only when on the freeway. the noise seems happen mostly when more force is needed to move the truck on an incline at 40 ++ mph and higher rpm. driving in od seems to reduce the noise a bit as well. the truck shifts just fine and im not noticing any performance degradation however i am very concerned about the noise. also to note is that the rear diff seems to be leaking more than usual i am planning on topping it off to see if that helps since i cant be 100% certain that the noise is coming from the middle left might be coming from the rear diff i doubt it though. any inputs would be greatly appreciated.. thanks -tim .

no idea why the paint on dodge trucks sucks but youre right - i see a helluva lot more crappy paint on dodges as opposed to others. thanks for the link. think ill leave the visors for later depending on how they look with the new headliner.. abby.normal back.off@nospam.net wrote in http//www.stockinteriors.com/headlineradhesive.asp i had the one in my sons truck previous owner was a heavy smoker for around $85 installed. the visors were $15-20 each. i just steam cleaned them. the heat will play a number on that stuff as well as the paint. my question is why is it that most other vehicles hold up and dodge does not i also know the clear coat is so thin that it makes me wonder how they even got a shine from a coat of paint that thin. napalmheart olsonfam@iserv.net wrote in ed m. ed@edmedlin.com wrote in abby.normal wrote coming off an 03 did you ever wax it in direct sunlight yeah all my dakotas did that but the truck is worth it. i got an estimate for repainting the hood and roof for $600 and did it myself for $250. paints bubbling and flaking off on my black 03 dak leaving rough white discolored areas on the roof and hood. of course clearcoats totally gone in those areas. havent been able to find it so far but is there a warranty period for the paint theres no rust only paint problems. tia. have you been using a buffer on it jam that was my first thought. many folks take their vehicles to detailers and they have some kid with a buffer doing it and it scares the hell out of me.......-. buffing out a vehicle is a very touchy job to do and sometimes can take the clear coat right off a vehicle if not done properly. ed no buffer. just the occasional hand-applied meguiars in the garage. its just a crappy paint job. and now the headliners coming down to boot. glues disintegrating and the headliners drooping. south florida sun is killer but any vehicle sold in this country should be able to withstand the elements for at least 4 years. mine simply didnt. concerning the headliner does this vehicle regularly have someone smoking in it stuff in the smoke can cause the glue to breakdown. the headliner in my dak is starting to sag no smokers but its a 97. ken nobodys ever smoked in the truck and im the original owner. i suspect its sagging from the heat just like the paint. the areas right in front of the visors near the windshield is coming down as is the whole area above the front seats. the rear is ok because its got a bit more breathing space between the actual roof and the headliner back there its a cc. one of these days ill remove the headliner and redo it. joann fabrics has spools of headliner material ready to go - all id need is the glue and the time to redo everything. .
