Sucky ass '98 Ram 1500 tranny
From : ian
Q: these auto trannys suck. i got 110000 mi out of it and always changed fluid every 20000 mi. i think that im the only person in the south that keeps the tranny fliud red. these trannys will use fluid and that is putting it lightly. my delima is that at first the tranny would not want to shift unless i lifted my foot off of the gas at redline then get back in to it to shift into 2nd. then after changing the fliud like i always did it developed a leak.that ended up being front seal went out. the old fluid was brown but didnt smell burnt. then all of the sudden it would take a lift foot shift into 2nd and at redline physical downshift into neutral and back up into drive for it to shift into 3rd. overdrive was never a problem. it would shift normally once it finally got into 3rd. up untill recently the check engine light came on. after troubleshooting it the code was 1756 - shift solinoid b. or something-or-other. my good friend is got to be the best auto tranny guy around and he put it on a diagnostic machine and ended up being all 3 of the shift solinoids that went out. needless to say i wanna put a .357 slug through it. the cool thing is that it dont need a rebuild because of my continous maintainance of the fluid and filter. so if you ever buy a used ram w/auto change the fluid and filter regularly. the only thing that will happen is that you spend $700 on solinoids shift kit and seal and labor instead of $1800 for a rebuild. has anybody else had this problem .

these auto trannys suck. yep. nope. as the original poster noted he spent money on electronic devices not trans parts. as we all know electronics are prone to failure whenever not on a maintenance schedule. some of us remember when chrysler corp. had the reputation of building the finest most durable automatic transmissions in the world they still do. torqueflite 727 and 904. those days are gone gone gone. wrong. the tf 727 is the basis for the od trans except for the 45r* models. these od trans are every bit as good as the old 3 spd variants when maintained. in reading the ops words this becomes evident and is proven by what he says. further if you think the mopar trans are a problem youve not read what the ford and gm buyers have gone through. max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan .
