Stupid questions about oil.
From : jmc
Q: ah guess its been a while. got lazy with my truck havent changed the oil since i bought it in 2001 all my previous vehicles i *always* changed the oil myself. now though theres no jiffy lube equivalent here and the cost of service here is about 4x that in the states. so ive bought filters and a wrench. cruising the automotive aisle at the local cheapmart realized im out of touch about things 1. what the sae ratings mean i seem to remember 5w30 for hot weather 10w40 for cold would 5w40 be ok for winter where the temps range between freezing and 70f thats what i saw a lot of there. 2. what would be a decent brand of synthetic motor oil 3. is it sold by the 5 quart/litre container in the states as well last time i bought oil id buy 5 one quart containers. much prefer the aussie way 4. anything i need to do switching from regular motor oil to synthetic any cleaners or additives trucks gone rather long between oil changes this time. thanks as always for any advice and any entertaining flamewars that result g jmc .

higher number is more thick lower number is more runny. the w number like 10w or 5w is rated at 0 degrees f. w for winter. so a 10 w 30 behaves like a 10 weight when its cold and a 30 weight when its hot. lower numbers good for cold weather higher for hot weather. whats your average temps in your climate i may be entertaining but i dont flamewar. -- christopher a. young you cant shout down a troll. you have to starve them. .. on tue 27 mar 2007 192353 +0930 jmc wrote ah guess its been a while. got lazy with my truck havent changed the oil since i bought it in 2001 all my previous vehicles i *always* changed the oil myself. now though theres no jiffy lube equivalent here and the cost of service here is about 4x that in the states. so ive bought filters and a wrench. cruising the automotive aisle at the local cheapmart realized im out of touch about things 1. what the sae ratings mean i seem to remember 5w30 for hot weather 10w40 for cold would 5w40 be ok for winter where the temps range between freezing and 70f thats what i saw a lot of there. 2. what would be a decent brand of synthetic motor oil 3. is it sold by the 5 quart/litre container in the states as well last time i bought oil id buy 5 one quart containers. much prefer the aussie way 4. anything i need to do switching from regular motor oil to synthetic any cleaners or additives trucks gone rather long between oil changes this time. thanks as always for any advice and any entertaining flamewars that result g jmc .

the bearing a little bit better and cools then a bit more too and helps extend their life. the higher volume allows you to use a lighter grade of oil in a worn engine and still float the bearings properly. the only cooling the bearing receive is from the oil flowing through them and there is heat being made in them from shearing forces and a increase flow will tend to reduce temps in them a little bit too. ----------------- thesnoman.com you should stick to something you know about like plowing snow. ok al please show us exactly where he is wrong. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving gee whiz! did i say he was wrong you didnt say it but you sure implied it and if you dont think so then your command of the english language is a bit on the weak side. or did i say he should stick to something he knows which means exactly what since he was correct here he appears to know this subject or at least this much about it so what exactly is the point of your post correct about what al .
