Q: .bob wrote if you live in montana and routinely cruise along at 85 mph changing gears will probably decrease mileage. guess you have never lived there i have and the faster you go the more power it takes though some think otherwise. drag is not constant and it climbs a lot after 70 mph or so and most of montana is about 4000 to 6000 feet above sea level except for eastern plain and the high line and your engine loses power as you go up in altitude approx 3% per 1000 ft and no tweaking will make up for the loss either. also the higher you go and the thinner the air the more you need gears to haul the load especailly on hills. you really feel it above 8000 feet or so when you suddenly realize that you have been floor boarded on a long hard climb but did not know it because the engine does not sound floorboarded because it is down on power so much. at time like this you want all the gears you can get sometimes and od would be totally useless above 5000 feet or so in a 4x4 unless you are geared pretty deep to begin with. in the old day from about the 50s through mid 70s or so trucks that used to ship to higher elevations from factory came with deeper gears to offset power loss but as emmission and mpg rating tightened they phased it out to ease certification. ok... replace montana with texas/new mexico or kansas. as for gearing my truck has no trouble doing 70-80. if i changed from 3.55 to 3.92 the rpms would increase by 20% but im pretty sure i will not gain 20 more power so i will just be spinning the engine faster and burning more gas. if i was pulling a lot then i would go to the 3.92s in a heart beat if i couldnt get a bigger truck. given i hardly drive the truck as it is i could get the 3.92s installed and not see much of a hit in my annual fuel consumption anyways. .

i was sent this info from my pophe found it on the net after i bought a durnago a periodic problem is failure of the powertrain control modulepcm. failure of the pcm may cause an intermittent stalling condition and can also prevent the vehicle from starting. the cost to repair the pcm is estimated at $530.00 for parts and $39.00 for labor. all price estimates are based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax. hope this helps rc peter wrote 99 durango 5.9l has started behaving really weird. it starts up more or less fine have to crank it more than usual and will idle fine. when i floor it under load rpms wont go over 2-3k it starts coughing and idles very roughly then stalls but sometimes will recover to smooth idle. i hooked up odb scantool and all sensors seem to be in working order. whenever it starts stalling oxy sensor shows lean mix and ignition advance fluctuates wildly between 10-25 degrees. no error codes. i even reset pcm by disconnecting battery - no joy. im thinking ignition trouble... had all wires distributor cap and coil replaced recently with accel hi-perf components... could it have something to do with this any suggestions welcome!!! peter sounds like a bad fuel pump. check fuel pressure at idle which will probably be normal. you really need to check them under a load. a chassis dyno is about the only way i know of to do that. i would check under the hood for the simple stuff - like loose vacume lines loose throttle body etc. if all that looks good id replace the fuel pump. the filter is in the same place if i remember correctly. might as well change that too. .

could somebody preferably in plain english explain the strategy in the tour-de-pew. or maybe even post a link to something that can explain it. im kinda following it a bit itd be nice for armstrong to win again before he retires but im lost to why the team has to stay together all the time. it was a big risky move to send ole george out to try to win that hillclimb when he might be needed to lead ole lance up the hill. wtf yep. because george might have a particular strength such as climbing hills. why does lance need to be lead up the climb does george get ahead of him and throw a tow strap back and drag his ass up pretty damn close. if lance is drafting someone the climb is less of a drag thus he is less tired while making his way to the top. because he is less tired if any one challenges after the climb lance can meet the challenge and likely beat them to the finish line. does the team stay together so somebody cant crash into lance and take him out that may be part of the strategy yes. generally if the team stays together they can determine the pace at which the group learned recently its the peloton rides and keep the riders with explosive break away ability rested in the draft. that way when someone challenges or tries to break away riders from the team are rested and can take advantage of the breakway to draft that rider and wait till he is tired then pass him. if the teams stays so close together why is lance in the lead and the rest of them are so far back itll take them an extra day to hit the finish line not sure on this one except to say that the sprints to the finish may have gained lance enough time over the course of a few days that it seems like the team is way behind. does those mega-dollar bikes have heated leather seats enquiring minds want to know.. no. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. could somebody preferably in plain english explain the strategy in the tour-de-pew. or maybe even post a link to something that can explain it. im kinda following it a bit itd be nice for armstrong to win again before he retires but im lost to why the team has to stay together all the time. it was a big risky move to send ole george out to try to win that hillclimb when he might be needed to lead ole lance up the hill. wtf why does lance need to be lead up the climb does george get ahead of him and throw a tow strap back and drag his ass up does the team stay together so somebody cant crash into lance and take him out if the teams stays so close together why is lance in the lead and the rest of them are so far back itll take them an extra day to hit the finish line does those mega-dollar bikes have heated leather seats enquiring minds want to know.. denny .

trying to decide between 1500 and a dakota. salesman said the hemi gets about the same gas mileage as the dakota. hard to believe given the hp difference. which years and engines are good to stay away from in both i have a 2004 1500 with the 5.7 liter hemi. my driving is probably 60/40 highway/city. i get right around 17mpg. long highway trips at 65 i can get a little better than 19mpg. if you have a lead foot you wont get anywhere near this. heavy acceleration will significantly lower these numbers. mike .

steve k wrote i have a dodge ram 1500 4x4 1999. i recently took it to the shop because while driving i can feel through the steering wheel all sorts of thuds and thumps that feels like its coming from near the end of the steering column. going around long corners i can really feel it. itll thump on and off throughout the whole corner. sometimes ill feel it just driving straight. its not a vibration or shimmy. one way i can try to explain it is it feels like someone is lightly tapping the steering column with a rubber hammer. its sporadic and holds no type of rhythm. so the guy in the shop says well your upper and lower ball joints have some play in it your tie-rod end has some play in it your wheel bearings have some play in it your track bar has some play in it. so i assumed he knew what he was taking about.... so after finding out that my guardian insurance plan paid for almost $600 of these repairs i had him do it all. the problem is still there. i couldnt believe it. i almost have a brand new front end basically. but yet the thumping knocking general unsafe feeling is still there. i just put new rotors calipers and pads on the front both sides. so its not a break vibration. i dont know much about this part of the truck so do you guys have any suggestions on where this could be coming from thanks steve ive got a 98 ram quad cab 4x4 sport w/ trailer tow pkg. it now has 78k miles on it and its been making or feeling this exact same noise since around 40k miles. been to a dodge dealer and an independent shop plus yearly inspections and ive been told nothing is worn. yet the noise / feel continues. hasnt really gotten much worse and doesnt really affect the handling. but i would like to correct it if i could. .
