Shift gears light flashing

Q: hello. could someone tell me how to disable the shift gears light on a 1987 dakota it is the 3.9 liter 5 speed. the damned light doesnt ever come on when i should be shifting but right after it rains it goes nuts. this wouldnt be a big problem except for when it starts to flash off and on the engine starts hesitating very badly. it also only does this when starting the motor. once the light stops flashing the engine runs very smooth. thanks in advance. john .
