Q: deeper gears makes a lot of sense. i also saw an episode of two guys garage in which they visited a transmission improvement shop i think it was in montana but the show was several years ago so i really dont know. the shop put in different valving torque converter lockup clutch addressed all the points which built up heat and a few other things to make it capable of withstanding the extra power generated by chipped or otherwise improved engines. as i recall it cost about $2000 but when they were finished the chances the transmission would fail were very slim. on sun 27 may 2007 012554 -0600 nathan w. collier asdf@asdf.com wrote please see http//inlinediesel.com/forum/topic.asptopicid=617 and give me your feedback and advice. thanks install 4 10 gears or deeper. i would not use juice or edge for towing solution here because engine strain aside it adds transmission strain too and that is not the strongest trany stock but it should hold up well behind a non chipped engine. chipping it will overload tranny. a 4.10 should help a lot and if you tow in mountains a lot you might even consider a 4.56. your engine is turbo charged but it still sees some power loss at high altitude and deeper gears would help a lot here. when you tow a big load with a automatic you should have 4.10 anyway by default. deep gears would help you all the way across the board too starting out and backing up as well and will likely improve mpg towing as well. your truck has a aam 11.5 rear axle the same as gm uses and aftermarket gears for it are widely avaible gm has used it since 2001 and dodge since 2003 so you do not have to buy the gears at a dealer and get skinned on them as they will likely be 700 or more at dealer for rear axle and less than 300 for quality after market ones. if it is a 4x4 you need to change front axle gears too and it also uses gm 9.25 ifs gear in front in its aam 9.25 solid front axle and gears can be had for it for about 200 buck or less. you could buy gears and shop around for best instalation price. just think of gears as using a newer bigger longer pry bar to move same load rather than trying to pull even harder on the same small pry bar. ----------------- thesnoman.com .

the 3100 is from a scale not under the best conditions but close. that was with my 2500 mega which i am looking to trade in on a one ton. i did check the individual axel weights here are the specs for the 3500 mega with 3.73 axle ratio you can tow 13050 lbs gross vehicle weight ratinggvwri=10500 payloadi=2675 curb weighti=7825 curb weightfront/rear=4501/3324 gawrifront/rear=4750/9350 gross combination weight ratinggcwri=21000 my trailer with horses is just under 15000 so my pin weight should be about 3000 so i am over the gvwr without putting any people in it. i find it odd that the rear axle can handle an additional 6000 lbs but you hit the gvwr by loading 2675 lbs on it. with only 249 lbs available to the front axle i can see why they dont want a plow on this model. you will likely be over the front axle rating just by putting 4 adults in the cab before you even hook the trailer. -- ken .

didnt this guy post something like this about a year ago the following is from a complaint i just register with the bbb. if youve had similar problems please contact me... i purchased a jaguar xkr from carmaxs davie store on 5/19/07. at which time i noticed several problems with the car that needed to be fixed. i reported the issues and left the car with them for repair. when i picked up the car i noticed that most of my issues were not addressed. while waiting for parts to arrive for the second round of repairs i took the car home for a few days. i found numerous other repair issues. i found 12 warrantee issues. when i brought the car back i gave the service manager sammy warnamally a printed list and copies of carmaxs certification form showing why these items were covered. i brought my car in on 6/1/07. when i got my car back 14 days later discovered 1 stereo wasnt fixed 2 second set of keys and valet key were not in yet 3 convertible cover was not ordered 4 trim around the door handle wasnt addressed 5 visor wasnt replaced because jaguar sent them the wrong part. 6 now the rear view mirror is loose as if the car suffered a heavy impact or was driven a long distance down a dirt road. caked on white mud is on the inside door panels. for 2 weeks i have been strung along by the service manager. when i asked to pick up my car until the parts arrived i was repeatedly told the seats were taken apart and awaiting a headrest motor from jaguar so i could not pick it up. jaguar parts department told me their delivery takes a week at most and parts can be overnighted for a nominal cost of $6 per item. i was lied to that my car was ready except for the headrest motors. i was also lied to about the extra set of keys being there. despite involvement of operations manager adam warner and general manager theresa my vehicle is still not fixed. i have lost many hours work suffered grief and have had to pay $606 payment for a car i was only able to drive a few days. i am releasing this to the media posting my story on internet consumer protection websites forums and groups to get together a class action lawsuit. i am registering a complaint with the attorney generals office and state attorneys office as i suspect foul play. as it is impossible to trust carmax i want all further repairs to be done at alpine jaguar. i want jaguar to inspect the car for accident/abuse damage. compensation for my monthly payment to capital one for $606. my lost time and wages estimated at 6 hours at $150 an hour. grief and punitive damages will be addressed in another arena. stephen horrillo advancitremovethis@comcast.net -- posted via a free usenet account from http//www.tera.com .

moving it and moving it effectly is a different matter and you need more that 3.73 gears to move a gcwr of around 12 ton effectively through mountains even with a ctd. that is why they have made different axle ratios for many many years. you can move a lot of weight with eninge a old 6 cylinder in a dump truck...... blah blah blah..... shut the fuck up. i never disagreed with your previous statement yet you have a need to attack my advice. heres where the bear shits in the woods the 48re is plenty strong enough to deal with a light chipping since advanced stages of chipping are not compatible with towing. secondly yes dropping to 4.10 or 4.30 gears would help towing the trailer. however your extraneous statements about dump trucks 6 cylinders and fuel choices have nothing to do with the question at hand. lastly my suggestion when towing is always to have the largest vehicle reasonable in front of the load. while the ram is fully capable and within its weight ratings to tow 16k lbs the wind effect on the side of that monster trailer might be better handled by the navistar pickup which weighs in at significantly more than the ram. all things being equal you will get about 11 to 12% more pulling power in every gear with 4.10s bullshit. simple math puts it at 10%. try it sometime. there are some out there though that equate a ctd ps or dmax to a otr engine but it is not and they will suffer when run at otr hp power levels for extended periods of time. the cummins b series is in fact a medium duty engine and thus superior to the light duty psd to dmax in design of block etc. the cummins b series has long been able to stand up well to ftlb ratings at 1000 ftlbs or so and hp ratings of over 500hp. no one is suggesting that nate go to these levels although tom l. drives every day at that level of power and has not one single problem with the diesel. i suggest you learn more about the cummins before dispensing advice about its capabilities. -- max join www.devilbrad.com and find out what free exchange of info is all about. there are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty soap ballot jury and ammo. please use in that order. -ed howdershelt author on sun 27 may 2007 125644 gmt max dodge max340@verizon.net wrote tom lawrence probably has the best idea on what ya need to do here. imo that trailer needs something more like the navistar pickup just for the weight that truck would bring. however the dodge is more than able to move it. moving it and moving it effectly is a different matter and you need more that 3.73 gears to move a gcwr of around 12 ton effectively through mountains even with a ctd. that is why they have made different axle ratios for many many years. you can move a lot of weight with eninge a old 6 cylinder in a dump truck if you have the right gears. your drive axles are the strongest reduction units in your truck and when geared properly can exert a lot of force. all things being equal you will get about 11 to 12% more pulling power in every gear with 4.10s with no added engine or tranny strain like you get from chipping it to gain same boost in towwing power. there is a reason that 400 hp otr rigs have 900 cu inch and bigger engines so they do not have to be chipped and can last a very long time even at max power. there are some out there though that equate a ctd ps or dmax to a otr engine but it is not and they will suffer when run at otr hp power levels for extended periods of time. this is not a dodge ford gm thing but rather a common sense thing and it requires regearing for a proper long term solution. it is lot different to tow in rockies than it is in the flat lands and what may work in the flats does not always work in mountains but some seem to forget that. how i would configure a low altitude flat land tower vs one that is at high altitude and in mountains is a completely different matter. detriot does not tell you this either because it might hurt sales image of top end trucks. if you elect to chip it to solve problem save some money for when stock tranny gives up the ghost on a long hard pull. it is not a bad tranny but it will suffer for boosted torque on long hard pulls and shorten its life. many avid chippers do not even consider this. manuals are a little more tolerant of this. ----------------- thesnoman.com .
