it is possible that the spring in the idler pully is weak. this creates not enough tension for the a/c compressor load. my serpent belt slips when the a/c comes on not all the time though.... it feels pretty tight....just how tight are these things it less than 1 in movement at the longest part of the belt run terry .

a slipping belt is indicative of a worn belt. i you replace it with a new belt and the a/c compressor works ok then the worn belt was the culprit. just me as a shadetree wannabe but the only weak tensioner ive ever seen was weak because the spring was broken. kathy kathy.kujo@rogers.com writes it is possible that the spring in the idler pully is weak. this creates not enough tension for the a/c compressor load. my serpent belt slips when the a/c comes on not all the time though.... it feels pretty tight....just how tight are these things it less than 1 in movement at the longest part of the belt run terry -- help support satellite radio! your local radio broadcasters through their powerful nab lobbyiests are currently pushing a bill through congress that if passed would block the satellite radio services from carrying local content traffic & weather please call your elected representatives at 202 225-3121 and urge them to oppose hr 4026. we need your help please. http//www.xmradio.com/grassroots/index.jsp .

not only that but the pivot wears and allows the pulley to run off the centerline of the belt path it is possible that the spring in the idler pully is weak. this creates not enough tension for the a/c compressor load. my serpent belt slips when the a/c comes on not all the time though.... it feels pretty tight....just how tight are these things it less than 1 in movement at the longest part of the belt run terry .

what would cause the pivot to wear i am not trying to start crap with you but i just cant see why it would ever move all that much. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving not only that but the pivot wears and allows the pulley to run off the centerline of the belt path it is possible that the spring in the idler pully is weak. this creates not enough tension for the a/c compressor load. my serpent belt slips when the a/c comes on not all the time though.... it feels pretty tight....just how tight are these things it less than 1 in movement at the longest part of the belt run terry .

it moves enough to wear the material where it pivots there is a tremendous side-load on that pivot point what would cause the pivot to wear i am not trying to start crap with you but i just cant see why it would ever move all that much. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving not only that but the pivot wears and allows the pulley to run off the centerline of the belt path it is possible that the spring in the idler pully is weak. this creates not enough tension for the a/c compressor load. my serpent belt slips when the a/c comes on not all the time though.... it feels pretty tight....just how tight are these things it less than 1 in movement at the longest part of the belt run terry .

because the tensioner is always bouncing sometimes it wears a grove where the pivot is always riding causing it not to take up tension like it is supposed to. once past the worn spot it works like it is ok. sometimes a new belt will work for a while because it is not the exact same length as the old one. james .

it moves enough to wear the material where it pivots i guess that my pulleys are all true since i cant see any real movement in mine. when i changed the belt at 85000 miles it still moved true and smoothly on its pivot but i can now see how in some cases it could be worn out. there is a tremendous side-load on that pivot point you will get no argumnet from me here. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

gets bad enough it will throw the belt off. now that would really suck - having had a belt come off once although due to a slightly mis-aligned ps pump pulley not a tensioner yes it does suck. loss of power steering coolant temperature rising a/c going warm voltmeter on 12v and falling... all signs that something is amiss under the hood what sucked more wasnt replacing the new belt with nothing but a short 6 ratchet but extracting all the pieces of torn and tattered belt from the various crevices along the front of the engine - on the side of the road lots of traffic perched precariously on the front bumper because someone decided to raise the truck about a foot over stock height. ah well.... at least i was carrying a spare belt .
