hi dextron is a good tranny fluid as well as todays standard. the bands have a servo that tightens the bands around your clutch hub. you should have 2. this will cause non-engagement if loose or broken. you need to tighten the band to about 21 in pounds to seat properly whatever your book says. the servo may also be leaking past the seal. its like a piston with a rubber ring. you open the band screw to what ever your specs say. i think its atso that makes a good manual for your trans. they are available at any tranny whare house or from jc whitney. they are only about $10.00. if its not shifting until warm have you checked your fluid level tranny fluid expands when it is hot and then it supplies fluid to your pump so that it can fill your valve body and clutch. i think that you can rule out your pump but you may want to do a pressure check on the tranny anyway. if you keep driving your tranny with the 3rd gear slip you are going to fry your clutch plates. your 3rd gear might be the same hub for reverse. i would suspect your valve body for sticking valves. i hate to tell you this but most likely you are looking at tranny disasemmbly for the 3rd clutch. im sorry. good luck to you. jessie kpg wrote hi all 99 dodge caravan 4cyl 3 speed auto. wont shift into reverse unless warm. has trouble shifting into 3rd anytime slips. if let off gas it *may* shift into 3rd. if downshift to 2nd goes right into 2nd ok. replaced trans filter and fluid. inside transmission was clean old fluid looked good. in reading the repair manual about the only other user service i can do is adjust the bands. will adjusting the bands help what does the band adjustment do actually will using dexron fluid have caused a problem in the 3 speed thanks kpg .
