Rattling cat converter

From : oldtimer

Q: now long ago my old 90 dakota v6 rolled over to 200000 miles and since it had an auto trannie i was beginning to worry about a repair job for more than the truck was worth. so i traded it off for a 96 dakota v6 with far less miles and much prettier. i have notiticed that the cat converter rattles as if some of the innards are loose. my old 90 dakota which had a fairly new cat converter was giving me 16mpg in town. the 96 v6 is only giving me 13-14 mpg in town. it there perhaps a connection between the rattling cat and the lower mileage oldtimer .

it there perhaps a connection between the rattling cat and the lower mileage no doubt...the cat on your current truck is shot. if the catalyst is plugging the exhaust even slightly youll see reduced performance and economy. replace it. --mike now long ago my old 90 dakota v6 rolled over to 200000 miles and since it had an auto trannie i was beginning to worry about a repair job for more than the truck was worth. so i traded it off for a 96 dakota v6 with far less miles and much prettier. i have notiticed that the cat converter rattles as if some of the innards are loose. my old 90 dakota which had a fairly new cat converter was giving me 16mpg in town. the 96 v6 is only giving me 13-14 mpg in town. it there perhaps a connection between the rattling cat and the lower mileage oldtimer .

according to the dodge service guy if the cat is plugged the truck will hardly run at all and will barely make it past 5 mph. apparently there is no such thing as a partially clogged cat. its all or none. finally it was rattling at the service shop not just on the way there. the service guy heard it and wrote it up and i got it replaced for free. still get 10-12 mpg though. it there perhaps a connection between the rattling cat and the lower mileage no doubt...the cat on your current truck is shot. if the catalyst is plugging the exhaust even slightly youll see reduced performance and economy. replace it. --mike now long ago my old 90 dakota v6 rolled over to 200000 miles and since it had an auto trannie i was beginning to worry about a repair job for more than the truck was worth. so i traded it off for a 96 dakota v6 with far less miles and much prettier. i have notiticed that the cat converter rattles as if some of the innards are loose. my old 90 dakota which had a fairly new cat converter was giving me 16mpg in town. the 96 v6 is only giving me 13-14 mpg in town. it there perhaps a connection between the rattling cat and the lower mileage oldtimer .

id check the heat shield on the catalytic converter body. ive had a couple of vehicles that rattled if the shield was loose or had broken brackets. obviously has nothing to do with lower gas mileage. eisboch according to the dodge service guy if the cat is plugged the truck will hardly run at all and will barely make it past 5 mph. apparently there is no such thing as a partially clogged cat. its all or none. finally it was rattling at the service shop not just on the way there. the service guy heard it and wrote it up and i got it replaced for free. still get 10-12 mpg though. it there perhaps a connection between the rattling cat and the lower mileage no doubt...the cat on your current truck is shot. if the catalyst is plugging the exhaust even slightly youll see reduced performance and economy.
