well im certainly not trying to argue against personal responsibility but do you smoke do you like to eat fast food are you at all overweight do you like to hunt or even plink at targets do you do anything that a soccer mom wouldnt do i hope not because im sure not going to pay for your foolishness. but the real foolishness is this... the net increase to the total medical costs incurred in this country due solely to the extra injuries received by unbelted motorists or motorcyclists or skydivers or whatever just has to be a drop in the bucket when you look at the big picture even if they do make good fodder in discussion groups. eliminating them would have somewhere between minimal and no impact on the whole of medical expenditures or insurance company costs thus even if they could be eliminated you wouldnt see any savings in your insurance bill. so in exchange for nothing or even in the absolute best case a pittance you are willing to accept the legal theory behind the seemingly endless stream of nanny laws that regulators seem more than anxious to come up with. doesnt seem like a very good bargain to me... fail to protect the freedoms you despise and youll eventually lose the freedoms you love. tbone wrote i didnt say that you personally were proposing that was just pointing out that once you start down the road of deciding what risk is acceptable for someone else you never know where that logic will lead. i have met several people who believe that motorcyclists no matter what safety equipment they wear voluntarily take on the extra risk so others should not be responsible for their medical bills. i know that is not what you said but it is only one little step further... actually i kinda agree with the people that you met. not that they should be denied medical coverage but that they are taking on extra risk and should be responsible for it. lets face reality the roads are far more crowded and dangerous and the bikes are much more powerful and faster than they used to be. this is a bad combination and it really should be up to the rider to make sure to use their safety equipment and make sure that they are properly insured for their own sake. while i see your point i dont want to be the one having to pay for it. .

tbone i think the crux of the argument is simply this. the math is factual however why would someone spend the $$ for a product that does nothing to improve performance while admitting more dirt into the engine my only problem with this is the level of bs that is sometimes reached in trying to say how bad this filter is supposed to be. i am hearing things like it lets damaging levels of dirt into the system false that a paper filter flows as much as the k$n false even that is they were so good that new cars would come with them false. iirc didnt the viper come with them for a few years i am sure that the vette did i for one agree that each owner has a preogative to spend his/her money in any way they wish however i do not like to see folks waste money on a product that provides absolutely no benefit and can indeed harm their very expensive! engine. i got mine when i bought the truck along with a recharge kit. i forgot to clean it during a tuneup and it went about 50000 miles with no problems. even with the extended time between cleanings the throttle body was still clean and the engine was not starving for air. it used about 1/3 of the kits contents to clean it and recharge it so in the long run it will save significant money if nothing else. regarding the guys comment about the regulars i agree that sometimes a thread will degenerate into a flame war but he has to understand that some on the ng feel pretty passionate about the waste of money the k&n product is. but the thing is that it is not a waste of money especially if you compare it to dealer parts costs for the paper filter. my truck is currently getting 16 mpg on the highway traveling at speeds in excess of 80 mph which to me is amazing. too bad it only gets about 8 to 10 in the city where it spends most of its time. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .
