fyi - i found out that it is the blend door and the blend door motor that have gone bad. hmmm. well dodge chrysler is setting me back $800 to get those things installed...its crazy. unfortunately they have to completely remove the dash to get to those parts so the labor is whats jacking up the price so high. i looked at several good local repair guys just to see if i can get a better deal and none of them would even touch a job that complicated. oh well. what vehicle uses a vacuum motor to control the blend air door how would you control that positionally it would be less costly to use a stepper motor to position the door. what type of climat control does it have automatic temp or manual -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving many new hvac systems regulate temperature inside the cab by moving a blending door to choose between the heater core which is always on full and the a/c core which may or may not be on depending on your selection of switches on the dash. when the a/c compressor is called for the cooling coil will tend to maintain a cold temperature just like the heater coil maintains one hot temperature and you would then select a position for the damper door to get a blend of the two temperatures which makes you all comfy in the cab. if the temperature output of your unit is swinging wildly it must be that the blending door is malfunctioning. it is usually operated by using engine vacuum connected through a small hose to the switches or thermostat on your dash then to a small damper motor connected to the blender door. something in that series is not working properly .. a common problem is often that you have a vacuum leak somewhere else around the engine compartment that is not leaving the hvac system enough vacuum to operate properly. look for hoses under the hood that have been pinched or left off by some previous work ... or that a rodent has chewed through etc. listen around the engine compartment for some constant hissing ... repair as needed. ack! my a/c is acting up in my 2001 dodge ram i am beyond 36k miles & i need some advice. it blows either hot air or cold air...nothing or not much in between. my compressor always kicks on. the hot air always blows fine however the cold air will sometimes blow hot...actually about 50% of the time...and when it does blow cold itll switch to blowing hot usually within a couple minutes. sometimes turning it off & back on again will make it blow cold again...for just a few more minutes though. i took it to pep boys and they said they think its a problem with the vent door under the dash or something like that. i called the dealer and they think it might be something else no description given. i want to get some ideas of what it might be before i take it in to get it fixed and get a $2000 bill slight exaggeration there. anyway...what do you guys think thanks! steve .

if you dont trust what the authority on the product sells than by all means put dexron/mercon in it or better yet type f. that will make the clutches grab real good. ;- um the authority on the product has a monopoly on it and therefore has a vested interest in selling it. they do they hold the patent on the additive package and have only licensed it to one manufacturer. supposedly there is no requirement that this fluid producer only sell their output to damlier chrysler but somehow most of the worlds production of atf +4 ends up at dc. there are a few leaks however. i forget who but theres a canadian producer that sells atf +4 and as that producer is also whom makes it for dc its probably the real thing. theres been repeated requests by the fluid manufacturers to dc to license the patent to them for production. these so far have been ignored. what all this means is that the second the patent runs out sometime in the next decade all the fluid producers will immediately start selling atf +4 and to hell with what dc wants. there has always been a kind of gentlemens agreement with the fluid manufacturers and the automakers on these issues. when the automakers need a new type of fluid they cooperate with the r&d department of a specified fluid manufacturer and get one custom designed. the deal works out to the maker puts up the money to make the fluid then gets to hold the patent until it expires. the fluid maker gets to license the rights to make it very cheaply then sell it back to the maker and to everyone else. then the fluid makers sell it on the open market and everyone makes a lot of money. this is how atf +3 worked out. with atf +4 chrysler got greedy and decided to use atf+4 as a leverage to get people to come into dealership service departments and to make money off fluid sales. of course an automaker is not setup to distribute fluids and can only do so very inefficiently which is why they sell the stuff for the $5 a bottle or whatever rediculous price it is now. and thanks ive done enough homework to know not to put anything but atf+x in these crappy chrysler trannys. the only saving grace on atf+4 is that unlike atf +3 it is a synthetic fluid. thus it in theory can last the life of the car not my words ill refer you to the synthetic oil crowd for rediculous claims and never needs changing. yeah right ted .

does the 02 ram rear calipers work like other rear calipers in the fact that youre supposed to twist in the caliper instead of pushing in to gain the space for your pads im not sure what you mean. this was my very very first time to handle brake mechanisms so i really cant refer to other rear calipers. i did try pushing the inside pad inward using large channel-lock pliers. one jaw was on the outside of the brake frame the other between the pads. that didnt seem to work well; it caused the entire brake mechanism the cylinders etc. to move outwards. just twisting that ratchet handle between the pads didnt do this it only move the brake pad nothing else. ron m. - i had to remove the disk brake calipers so i could slide the axle in and out a few inches as is required. no big deal just two bolts holding on each caliper and then i hung it from the axle to keep the weight off the rubber hose. easy. but.... i had no idea that the brakes would close up after i took them off the rotor!!!!! the rotor was an inch thick but the brakes had closed up to about 1/2 an inch!!! what i did was get a 1/2 ratchet wrench then put a 12 socket extension on it. then i stuck the handle of the wrench between the brake pads and twisted it using the extension as a lever. it forced the pads far enough apart to get them back onto the rotor. it had me worried for a while there... -; .

hmmm replying to my own message - got it to start... i pulled a plug to check for spark at the plug - the arcing at the coil earlier seemed to say i am making fire but the distributor isnt delivering to the plugs. well i had spark and very wet clean plugs. it rained last night. so i am assuming a moisture issue. tonight i will replace cap/rotor for insurance. a year ago i put an msd 6a ignition on the truck and a few days later it wouldnt start also after a rain. i assumed the ignition was falwed and returned to the stock ignition... it was on a quick-plug thing so i tried the msd again for a while... it worked for 2 months and again died one day... i cant remember if it was wet that day or not. any thoughts are appreciated. thanks guys. plug wires. roy .

bearing heading south -- fmb only one b in fmb hi all ive got a 99 doge grand caravan es 3.8l. the problem i have is a load continuous squealing sound coming from around the belt area when im not accelerating or at a standstill. ive had a mechanic check the belts etc to see whats causing the annoying squeal. he said the belts/tension and everything looks good and that a piece of crud or something has got stuck somewhere around the belts/pulleys and that it will probably disappear by itself over time. but it seems to be getting louder and even more annoying and i want to know if there would be any harm in me trying to spray some lubricant wd-40 or similar around the pulley shaft areas. thoughts about other possible causes and remedies would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. jitendra .

hypertech designed their programmer to only work with one vehicle. once it is connected to a vehicle for the first time it stores the serial number of that vehicle in its static ram and that is the only vehicle it will ever work with. there is no published method to clear it out and hypertech customer support will not help you either. chances are that there is other non-recoverable data required for operation also stored in its static ram to prevent you from attempting to clear it. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving i purchased a used hypertech module that still has the other vehicle information on it. the programmer wont program because it isnt a matching vin number. how do i reset the p-rom chip i wonder if its light sensitive eeprom. i cant believe i cant find anything about this i doubt it is because of great customer service at hypertech. thanks .

bill hall wrote ron m. wrote feel free to ask me any other questions. ron m. no pics really needed your comments have been great. since you have that cushy auto transmission you probably cant answer the backlash question. with a manual creeping across broken pavement or speed bumps in the lower gears can really start a truck bucking and lurching sometimes. if the powertrax adds to the driveline windup it might not be a good tradeoff for me. im glad to hear my truck isnt the only one that does this. idling over the speed bumps can get some clunking and jerking going. i have started to take it out of gear when going slow over the bumps. i have an 03 1500 4x4 with manual and was beginning to wonder what the f#&$ i was doing wrong. my old 75 f250 with manual didnt seem to be nearly as bad but it was only a 2 wheel drive. we drive too slow thats what were doing wrong. ha! you could be right! .

hey robert i too am driving a 99 durango 4x4 automatic thats experiencing the same problem your durango is. im dropping it off at a trans place on monday morn. but im glad i read your post because i describe my problem to people like my trans is slipping. but youre right -- its not slipping; its having difficulty catching between gears. once its in gear its fine. but when its stuck i either have to let off the gas and let it catch or risk blowing the engine by stepping on the gas. i live in wnc with lots of slopes and each time i start climbing a hill or steep incline it gets stuck between gears. it also seems to get stuck lots when i start accelerating to make a turn. since i was a teen ive owned dodges. i leased a new 98 dakota when the new body style came out and it needed a new camshaft within one month of me driving it. also i had a ram 1500 after that and it had trans problems! my durango only has 48k miles. ill post the outcome here. rosathia .

thats great. if i get that many miles off my dodge ram 1500 ill be very happy. my big concern is that its a fairly heavy truck running off a v-6 engine neighboring 200 horses which isnt that strong & in turn may cause excess strain on the transmission. hopefully that wont be an issue though. 173000 miles on my 97 dakota and the automatic transmission is still working fine. ken ive heard that if you have a dodge youre lucky to go past 80000 miles and still have a working transmission. in many cases they go bad early as it sounds like in your case. i had an old 1994 dodge ram & it had transmission problems - and im concerned my 2001 will have the same issues eventually. = ive met some real scum bags at car dealers - who assume that the customer is an idiot and their isnt a problem when there is a problem. i tell you this much...i will never buy a dodge again just because of the junk that ive had to go through with my dealer + the fact that i think theyre rather unreliable vehicles. i will keep mine until its paid off...then its gooooooooooooooooone. hopefully it wont fall apart before then! lol. i have a brand new dodge durango. almost right away i noticed that when i started it up after it was sitting for a while overnight or at the office that it would not go into 2nd gear right away. after going about 1/10 - 2/10 of a mile it would then shift into the correct gear. i called the dealer and told him about the problem and he said that this was normal. i have a hard time believing this is considered normal operation. has anybody else had this problem has anybody else brought it up to a dealer i would like to know .
