when i went to ft. leonard wood in january 1970 i was a little older than most of the recruits at 22. even then the guys that had the least trouble with the d.i.s were those raised with a strong work ethic. they already knew that orders were not suggestions. when my eldest went to navy basic in chicago 7 years ago he knew the difference between orders and suggestions also and they made him an acting squad leader for it. he said it made basic almost easy for him. -- budd cochran john 316-17 ephesians 28-9 romans 323 623 our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. it is wholly inadequate for the government of any other. john adams on fri 6 oct 2006 100628 -0400 roy roy@home.net wrote in light of the shit going on in the world today. does this country need to bring back the draft yes or no and why. roy y e s !!!! my pet peeve for years is kids have too little direction in life since they dropped the draft... my version is a bit different though.... i think that everyone male & female should be drafted for at least 2 years of some type of service... make it military peace corps teaching kids in poor areas picking up trash etc... anything that will give them a sense of real life and aid the us in some way... then whether they were in the army or tutoring poor kids or whatever theyd be eligible for scholarship help to continue their education.. in my experience one of the few perks of being old folks that were in the service or did some other job that required responsibility and giving do much better in college and life in general because theyve had a look at the bad side and dont want to be there... ymwv thanks for the soap box bro.... mac https//home.comcast.net/mac.davis https//home.comcast.net/mac.davis/woodstuff.htm -- posted via a free usenet account from http//www.tera.com .

not enough people signing up on the voluntary military system not enough soldiers sailors or bases in reserve thanks to the liberals military personnel doing extended tours because the military is understaffed and many are re-enlisting past their 20 year retirement because of the understaffing . . you do the math. -- budd cochran math fiscal 2006 enlisted recruiting from oct 1 2005 to aug 31 2006; active duty 102% of goals r and ng 97% of goals for august army national guard retention was above 119 percent of the cumulative goal of 31599 and air national guard retention was 110 percent of its cumulative goal of 9236. both the army and air guard are currently at 98 and 99 percent of their end strength respectively. losses in all reserve components for july are well within acceptable limits. the navy reserve presents a concern with its increasing attrition rates. indications are that these trends will continue into august. good reading at http//usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/06recruiting.htm or http//tinyurl.com/fkyd7 and 20 years in the military is not an age for mandatory retirement but rather a time where you can retire. those who want to put in more years for a higher retirement income or for any of a host of reasons may just like those of us in private industry who can retire at 59 1/2 but choose rather to stay and work. fmb north mexico .
