Q: snoman wrote nosey wrote the weak link with any oil burner is egt but if engine is not chipped there is little danger of damage on a long sustained pull. myself i would limit rpms to about 2600 or so on along steady pull i would not take it to the redline and hold it there. not that it would really hurt it but fuel economy will suffer on redline pulls and why bother just to get up a hill 5 or 10 mph faster when the other side will still be there when you get there i think you got it backwards there. cummins recommends that you operate the engine above the peak torque rpm but below max operating rpm in full throttle conditions. that is what i said as 2600 rpm the limit i set is above its torque peak not below it. i have driven several commins trucks and know its power curve well. regardless of ratings it has peaked by 2000rpm actual below that in a dodge. as you increase the rpm near redline effeciency drops as pumping losses increase resulting in higher fuel consumption for the load on it. in my younger years i used to help a inlaw farm and i always ran tractors a few 100 rpm above rated torque peak and that way they would slug though tuff spots real good and fuel consumption was lower too. if you worked it near the redline as my inlaw did sometimes it would pull down more in tuff spots and use a bit more fuel and not sound as happy either my mistake i was looking at the hp/rpm ratings not torque. .

the other day my windshield washer fluid warning light went on at the beginning of a road trip and stayed on the whole way. once i arrived at my location i checked the resevoir and i had plenty of fluid. the next time i drove the truck the light was off for about half the trip so i thought that it was just a glitch but then it came back on and has stayed on again. has anyone come accros this and if so what is it and how can i fix it .

i have a 97 dakota with about 80000 miles. about 1000 miles ago although thats more than a year because my truck sits while i fly around i was told during a routine oil change by my dodge dealer that i need a serp. belt. ok do it...i said without looking at it. now during another oil change the dealer service rep...a different guy and different techs says you need a serp. belt and tensioner. what i you just sold me a s-belt 1000 miles ago. he looks up my records and says..ok actually you just need a tensioner but the belt and tensioner are usually done as one job but you can just get the tensioner. i said im suspicious didnt i need a tensioner 1000 miles one year ago in which case i would hardly have to pay extra for it he didnt know. did anyone check the tensioner back then he didnt know. so i ask you all what is the most likely scenario here. and how likely is it that i would need a tensioner only 1000 after getting a new serp. belt i think he quoted a price around $150. i dont necessarily trust the service dept. because there is alot of turnover...new reps etc. everytime i go in for an oil change lately they seem to always find something i need...recently it was throttle body cleaning and injector flush and brake fluid flush. anyway how important is this tensioner...does it just reduce the life of the s-belt if its bad .

mine is also an 04 600 ctd except its a 6 speed 4x4 with 3.73 rear. my very first tank produced 19.6 mpg. my truck gets decent mileage but if i drive it 80 mph the mileage goes to heck. at 85 mph its right with my 92 w250 w/360 v8 5 speed and 4.11s. the 04s sweet spot seems to be just under 2000 rpm. i really regret the non-disconnect front axle and the 3.73 gear. my friend has a 6 speed 02 with 3.55s. much better on the highway. if chrysler didnt make it so hard to put old fashioned locking hubs on the front axle i would do it tomorrow. one other thing no one mentioned. do not believe the mileage on the digital read out. mine always reads lower than the actual mileage. al .

not likely a wrist pin or piston slap will last more than a few seconds because it take a while for the piston to heat up and swell. unless of course the piston is worn enough. but that never happens right sounds like rods but mains may be worn too because rods get oil via main journals thru cross drilling and whne mains get worn the rods get less oil pressure and more wear. while true mains rarely make noise when worn. you can replace the mains and rods in the truck as long as you can get the crankcase pan off of the engine and i would not replace rods without the mains either because the problem may have started there. of course if the bearings are worn and a proper hydrodynamic wedge was not formed the op is back to where tbone put him in taking the engine out. bottom line this is better done outside the confines of the engine compartment no matter what the problem turns out to be. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. max dodge wrote if you have a knocking from the engine it could be a rod but also could be wristpin related or piston slap. youll need to diagnose the actual problem first. not likely a wrist pin or piston slap will last more than a few seconds because it take a while for the piston to heat up and swell. sounds like rods but mains may be worn too because rods get oil via main journals thru cross drilling and whne mains get worn the rods get less oil pressure and more wear. you can replace the mains and rods in the truck as long as you can get the crankcase pan off of the engine and i would not replace rods without the mains either because the problem may have started there. -- posted using the http//www.autoforumz.com interface at authors request articles individually checked for conformance to usenet standards topic url http//www.autoforumz.com/dodge-98-9l-bearing-problem-ftopict130465.html visit topic url to contact author reg. reqd. report abuse http//www.autoforumz.com/eform.phpp=635429 .

so how much would a long block cost tbone wrote the 5.9l motor in my 98 2500 quad cab has developed a lower end knock. its most noticeable on start for a few seconds but its always there just much quieter. this truck has about 100k on it. my thought is a rod bearing but i guess it could be a main bearing. other than this the motor runs strong. we pull a 5000 pound trailer about 200 miles every weekend for several months. were looking to possibly be pulling for longer distances next year. are there any reasons to not putting rod and/or main bearings in or is a short block the only way to go thanks for any suggestions. the change in sound you are describing sounds like a main bearing. the problem is that if a bearing has failed the chances are pretty good that the crank journal that the bearing supports or rides on is also damaged which will require removal of the crank for machining. while this can be done with the engine in the vehicle in many cases it really defines pita to do it. if it was a main bearing you also have to check the block for damage from this as well and if it is out it comes. if you intend to keep the truck for a while and with the work load you put on it i would suggest going with a short block and with about 100k on it you might think about going with a long block instead and get the new rebuilt heads and valve train as well. .

99 durango 5.9l has started behaving really weird. it starts up more or less fine have to crank it more than usual and will idle fine. when i floor it under load rpms wont go over 2-3k it starts coughing and idles very roughly then stalls but sometimes will recover to smooth idle. i hooked up odb scantool and all sensors seem to be in working order. whenever it starts stalling oxy sensor shows lean mix and ignition advance fluctuates wildly between 10-25 degrees. no error codes. i even reset pcm by disconnecting battery - no joy. im thinking ignition trouble... had all wires distributor cap and coil replaced recently with accel hi-perf components... could it have something to do with this you guys were all wrong ; it was the coil no air bubbles in fuel as far as i can tell ; fuel pump is fine too. swapped back oem coil and it runs as new. i also measured primary resistance on both coils about 22ohms on both... dunno how can i measure secondary winding. my idle is just a tad rough now - which was the reason why i upgraded to accel in the first place. now i wonder how on earth can faulty coil account for smooth idle at first then spluttering/missing during acceleration and finally settle down to very rough idle my only guess would be cross-induction caused by higher voltage... there actually is tsb out for 99 durango covering ignition wires cross-induction. when i swapped back the original coil voltage went down and cross-induction stoppped. if so why did it run just fine with accel for several months a temperature sensitive connection inside or outside of the coil could cause this. there could be a problem with the accel coils internal connections or one of its external connections could have been corroded or loose. if it was an external connection your swapping it with the origional would have cleaned that up and if it is internal the coil is defective. when you increase rpms of the engine you increase the current flow which will heat up an improper or corroded connection and cause it to lose some or all of its ability to conduct and the coil output voltage will drop considerably if not fail completely and will stay this way until they cool down again. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .
