joel wrote greetings recently i purchased a 2001 dodge ram 1500 quad cab/ off road package with an automatic transmission with a 5.9 liter magnum gas engine. i love it except for the dismal gas mileage. on the open road holding steady at 75mph its getting 10 mpg. thats the best it does! its got one of those headliner mounted information centers that can display the current mpg. i turned the dang thing off because i dont want to see sometimes single digits for my current mpg cruising down the open road!! dodge engine normally get prety lousy mileage but 10 is a little low. start by checking to make sure the overhead console is correct. then do the normal tune up things. then start looking for bad parts like o2 sensors. plus with the cruise set and driving over some hilly terrain the transmission shifts up and down more than expected. thats pretty normal too. its an attempt to stay in od as long as possible to conserve fuel. and the cruise control is a little sensative it tries to maintan speed with rapid throttle movements. when it gets hilly either take it out of od or turn off the cruise control. oh and when i put it in four wheel drive the front steering seems like it really binds a lot. if its on dry pavement that is also normal. all 4x4s do that. thats why they tell you never to use it on dry pavement. no all part time 4wds do that not all 4wds. but he is correct using your truck a part time 4wd in 4wd on dry pavement will damage the truck and require expensive repairs. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

thats the reason thanks duffer -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving bonenospam@nc.rr.com says... open rears tend to favor one axle but i forgot which one. driveshaft torque tends to lift the right rear wheel. drag racers often use assymetric shock/spring/traction bar/ tire pressure setups to accomodate the effect. independent suspension doesnt have this quirk. .

joe avoidingspam@hotmail.com wrote yes the infinity amp is very heavily eqd to compensate for the lousy frequency response of the speakers. theres tons of low end around 50-60hz and the high end is definitely lacking. the whole thing cant be pushed too hard or the speakers start flapping and farting. i have a 95 so this may not apply. but my front speakers two ways were covered with a grill cloth that low pass filtered out most of the highs. i took out the speakers and saw this almost opaque cloth so i ripped it off and put the speakers back in - it made a world of difference. give it a try its free. until you run your head unit directly to the speakers hopefully new components bypassing the factory stuff youll be locked into the substandard sound of the oem infinity amp/speakers. i think the money would be better spent on a good power amp driven by the stock head unit and perhaps better speakers. too bad the stock speaker mounting locations suck so bad. frank ball frankb@sonic.net .

from steve barker railphotonut@not.hotmail.com date 2/13/2004 701 pm central standard time has anyone else heard of or experienced a cracked gear housing on the front of their cummins i was shaking down an oil leak which was not the crack when i found the crack up on the top side of the gear case under the fan hub. the leak was the crank seal and the loose cover bolts at the bottom. anyway to make a long story short it is a major ordeal to replace the gear case and so it got the jb weld treatment for now to see how long it lasts. i just wondered how the heck this thing could have become cracked. does it resemble this at all http//www.thepowershop.com/thedreaded.htm robert .

michael i have been doing car audio for almost 13 years a lot on and off but none the less i can tell you it is not as easy as just installing a new head unit. each vehicle is different. the problem lies here though if you install say the alpine cda-9811 am/fm/cd/mp3/wma player w/built in eq and crossover which is a 50x4 unit and you connect the amp trigger lines together guess what you just negated the power on the deck and are only using the amp in the truck. you have to completely by pass the amp in the truck by running new wires to the speakers to tapping in to the factory wires past the amp to use the features of the new unit. the same would apply if you added a new amp to the new deck. hope this helps and clears it up some. hi joe so would replacing the head unit be a simple exercise if the amp is seperate i want a unit that will play mp3s on a cd. the stock unit on my 03 will not. it is the infinity system btw. --mike iamgoode@aol.com iamgoode wrote in im looking to upgrade my factory stereo ive blown 3 infinity speakers now and im ready for something else. i want to replace the front speakers wtih better quality but the same size and put something a little larger in the back doors its a quad cab. my questions are does the back speaker set up have a cross over in the premium factory system would seperates or coaxial work better in the back anyone have luck running any larger speakers under the factory grilles recommended wattage ratings thanks. sean rec.bicycles.marketplace the 00 dak sound system is similar to the 03 which is what i have. the basic layout is this stock oem head unit about 5 watts/channel rms speaker leads feed the infinity amp about 15 watts/channel rms in the passenger kick panel which in turn drives the speakers. btw the infinity amp is very heavily eqd to compensate for the lousy speakers. in the cc the front speakers are components whereas the rears are simply coaxial. dont know about the qc rears but the fronts are the same. the crossovers are somewhere in the wiring between the speakers and the infinity amp which is garbage btw. assuming youre not going with a subwoofer your best bet is to get a new head unit an aftermarket amp if you can afford it and 4 component speakers. components will almost always sound better than coaxials - you just need adequate power for them. on the qc the woofer size is 6-3/4 all around. some components come with tweeters mounted in the woofer others have separate tweeters like the fronts in your qc. regardless theyll all have crossovers. either way youll be able to find components that can fit. also make sure you get adquate wiring based on your amps rating. joe black 03 dakota 5.9 r/t cc calypso green 93 mustang 5.0 lx hatch with a few goodies .

good idea -- thanks! john chall wrote well i guess no one has had or seen this problem and that is a good thing. if a bunch of you had seen the same problem id have to stop telling my chevy and ford truck loving friends how great dodge trucks are these days. cheers john i have a 1998 durango with the 360. a while back the gas guage started acting up when the gas level reached 1/4 tank. at that point the guage would alternate between reading 1/4 tank and well below empty not energized. this flip-flop would happen every minute or so. with the low fuel chime sounding every time the guage dropped below empty i was motivated to head straight to a gas station. on one occasion i was unable to pull over for gas. running late i decided to put up with the periodic chime alerts. on that 40 minute trip i developed another problem. i think they may be connected. i suspect that the flip-flopping guage and chime caused an electrical surge damaging another circuit. now my abs and parking brake idiot lights stay on all the time and my speedometer quit working. all this happened in one instant during a flip-flop. later i discovered that the door locks no longer lock automatically at 15 mph. ive checked fuses etc without finding a problem. i replaced the speed sensor but didnt get my speedometer back. anybody seen something similar to this have any ideas im ready to give up looking for the problem. thanks john i bet this is a main computer problem. you have to look at the point all these circuits have in common. afaik thats the main computer. i wouldnt waste time checking out the various senders and indivual circuits. i dont have a repair manual for a 98 but you should start by reading up on how these circuits work. -- .bob 97 h-d fxdwg - turbocharged!! 01 dakota quad sport 5.9/auto/4x4 83 gmc jimmy beater 66 427sc cobra replica - project 66 mustang coupe - daily driver -----= posted via feeds.com uncensored usenet =----- http//www.feeds.com - the #1 group service in the world! -----== over 100000 groups - 19 different servers! =----- .
