Q: final diagnosis cracked cylinder head. ouch. repair estimate grab your chest. $2250 which includes two *complete* new cyl heads incl valves springs rockers plugs wires etc and a 12-mo/12k mile warranty from date of service. so the next question is it worth it would you do it why or why not personally no. id replace the one head at a cost of about $650 for parts - id do the labor myself. does the $2250 include the cost-to-date of the teardown or have you already paid the labor for that however to pay someone else to do the work and guarantee it for a year for essentially $900 in labor isnt too terrible. look at it this way... the trucks not worth a whole lot resale-wise in its present condition. if $2250 gives you another year on it plus trade-in value for $188 a month thats saving you about $200 a month over what a new truck payment would be. if it gives you two years cut that in half. in the end i think its worthwhile to repair the truck. .

i thought i should start a new thread -- i already know i have attention deficit disorder so sorry nichrosey for getting off topic... i plan to reinforce with any good steel i have around and do it for nothing -- or as close to as possible it would be cool to have a minimal hydraulic lift that will hold up a rear end but may require much heavier than a 3/4 t with 1t suspension old 77 gmc but i would love to try -- after i have already passed it through licencing ;- jd your dad sounds really cool resourceful and smart homepage http//www3.sympatico.ca/rske/ .

lawrence tnloaswpraemnmcien5g@earthlink.net writes the $2250 is the total drive-out price for the repair replacing both fully assembled heads incl shop supplies grrr... tax and all work to-date. yep - at this point id do it. did i mention they also gave me a free loaner 06 caravan brand-spanking new only 6 miles on the clock when they handed me the key. theyve treated me pretty good in the past too never any complaints except for the shop supplies charge which grindles me. they dont usually give service dept customers a loaner especially on a 9-yr old truck but a $2200 repair looks good on their books in an otherwise slow month. archer dodge-rv sugarland tx .

thanks for your help tom. im doing this out in the driveway and ended up putting it back together for now. i probably wont get back to it for a week or so having so much going on right now. im 30 miles north of boston but even with the distance your offer is tempting. just how far down into nj are you i probably should have left my real email before. its j*u*m*p*i*n*j*o*h*n*t*a*y*l*o*r*@yahoo.com minus the obvious. dana tom lawrence wrote the one that the clips are attached to. the center bolt that holds the pack together has a round head on it and im having trouble getting any real torque on it to get it apart. can i just cut this bolt and buy a new yes - but use a pair of c-clamps to hold the spring pack together one just on either side of the center bolt before removing the bolt. even with no weight on the pack the individual leaves are still under some tension. crank down good-n-tight on the c-clamps and you might even take enough tension off the center bolt to back it off. if not sure - just cut it and replace it with a new one. i also did try the nuts holding the shackle on just to see if theyd come off and was able to but are those threaded rivets instead of bolts they didnt seem to want to drive out whatsoever. all three bolts that hold the rear springs in place front and rear shackle-to-spring and shackle-to-mount should be the same - a big torx head and a nut on the other side. the end of the bolt where the nut threads on should be a hex-shape allowing you to turn the nut with a big wrench and hold the bolt still with a small wrench. they will all come out but may be held in place from rust/corrosion. just whack em harder are you anywhere near jersey ive got a pair of leaf springs from my 99 2500 just sitting and collecting dust. theyre cheaper than what the replacement leaf will cost you heck theyre cheaper than what the new center bolt would cost you .

just did my ram 2500 4 wheel drive when u put it in reverse you will hear a clang thats the joints mine had 6 joints total parts on the joints was $382.50 they were a bear to get out as the old ones where in there pretty good couldnt press them out had to beat them out maybe yours will be easier also 4 wheel has a front shaft also. good luck. .

good couldnt press them out had to beat them out maybe yours will be easier also 4 wheel has a front shaft also. good luck. with my ball-joint press and an impact wrench i blew out the end of a bearing cap by driving the cross through it accidentally had the press interfering with the movement of the cap. theres no way any rust is going to stand up to that kind of pressure. you just needed a better press .

i installed an aftermarket amp in place of the infinity kick panel amp and blew out 2 of the 4 oem infinity speakers within a few weeks. i then replaced the fronts with infinity 6010cs components and forgot about the rears. now i hear the oem head units horrible thd. having the heads speaker leads going into the amp certainly doesnt help so now a new head unit is next. youre absolutely right - its best to replace everything for the best sound. the whole system is only as good as the weakest link. azwiley1 azwiley1@cox.net wrote in the biggest problem that most of the so called premium systems have especially the infinity is that even with the factory install amplifier they are under powered. an aftermarket head unit regardless of brand will make them sound a lot better. for the best results though you may want to consider either doing a complete system replacing everything or by passing the factory amps and installing a new though not huge aftermarket amp. joe wrote havent heard the alpine but the infinity in my 03 dak is awful. i have the infinity in my 01 ram that sounded horrible. i replaced the stock headunit with an alpine and it now sounds great. the speakers are decent but the headunit was awful. .
