Now Diesel owners mixing 50/50 oil/diesel with no conversion.

Q: by blair goldstein www.advance.com june 24 2005 its a simple recipe mix 10 gallons of vegetable oil with 10 gallons of diesel fuel. bobby tabor has been feeding the unusual mixture to his 1987 cream-colored mercedes benz for almost a week. it fuels his car on the 60-mile commute between his home in appomattox and his car technician job at mb euro service on boonsboro road in lynchburg. theres just one problem though - the smell. i dont notice any difference in the power or performance of the car tabor said. you do get an odor out of the tailpipe and it smells just like it does outside of a mcdonalds. its that charcoaled grill odor. mark barker owner of mb euro service said he didnt know about bobs experiment when he pulled into work monday but he smelled the change. when bobby comes to work we all get hungry barker said. we have to make a breakfast run. tabor said he has been talking to his brother who works in the heating and air conditioning business for almost five years about powering a car with vegetable oil. about three weeks ago they started their experiment. they get used vegetable oil for free from friends working at local restaurants. tabor said the free oil is the only way it is economical for him to use vegetable oil in his car. question. raw oil form the frier would be rather dirty wouldnt it do you have to set up a filertation system at your house to filter the oil form one drum to another what kind of filter is used if you dont filter it at home.. what does it do to the filter in the car does the cooking oil burn any cleaner then diesel or is it just cheaper then diesel from the fuel station .

cool. whens the tranny temp gauge going in will i need to worry about it so long as the truck is stock probably not but since you intend to tow a lot with this truck id still put a temp gauge in there. true theres a tranny temp idiot light on the dash but by the time that comes on its time to immediately pull over and let it cool off. id much rather be able to see the temp rising so maybe i could manually downshift the tranny and get it back into lockup so the temp will come down. i was thinking about the banks torque converter. i wouldnt. theyve just started producing a torque converter whereas other companies dtt and ats have been doing this for a long time. agreed. however i keep hearing from some of my buddys all power stroke owners about an issue with the cummins both modified and stock burning up #3 cylinder. anything to it not that ive heard of. i have heard of people burning up #5 or #6 because of over-fueling and improper monitoring of egts. there have been some issues with injectors sticking and torching a piston but that could happen on any cylinder. these have been very few and far between... much less than say a 6.0l powerstroke filling its crankcase with diesel for example lol....as i understand it the cummins takes about 12000 miles to fully break in. thats a long wait tom. - if you work it yeah... i mean just give it a few thousand miles before putting any more power to it. once youve got 500 miles on it hook that trailer up load it up with whatever and drag it around for a couple hundred miles. thats the best way to break in a new engine. they like to work. .

the real bev wrote it takes a couple of hours in fact. it also seems to require 2 quarts more than the 318 in our 1968 van too. dealer said huh jiffy-lube guy who seemed to know what he was doing said hed never seen a slow drainer. any ideas/explanations this should be easy to figure out. stick a pencil or the like up through drain plug hole and i will bet you you find pan it loaded up with sludge blocking drain hole. that engine is old enough together with the quality of oil back then if it was not changed often that some serious sludge could be built up in there. i would not try to flush it as that much sludge could damage motor is broken loose. if it is sludged up the best fix would be to drop the pan and clean it out if you plan to keep vehical for a while yet. -- posted using the http//www.autoforumz.com interface at authors request articles individually checked for conformance to usenet standards topic url http//www.autoforumz.com/dodge-70-318-pickup-oil-drains-slow-ftopict126565.html visit topic url to contact author reg. reqd. report abuse http//www.autoforumz.com/eform.phpp=616894 .

can you provide the url from k&ns website i didnt really need luck in my search. at http//www.knfilters.com/facts.htm you can find 1 you have the url from k&ns site. 2 you found k&ns own info not an objective testing of filters. for that you will need a bit of luck. 3 but since you asked.... http//www.audiworld.com/tech/eng18.shtml a gentleman uses his audi to test two filters via info from the maf seonsor. http//www.getdieselpower.com/my04dodgefiles/spicer%20filter%20testing/spicerfiltertesting.html a rather extensive test on a bunch of filters. http//www.durangoclub.com/faq/performance.html a repost of a test run by a corvette club. http//www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest1.htm a not so scientific test but informative. there is a start for you. search parameters k&n filter testing no quotes -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. can you provide the url from k&ns website i didnt really need luck in my search. at http//www.knfilters.com/facts.htm you can find to ensure our air filters provide a high level of dirt protection we regularly test our air filter designs using the testing procedure described above. those tests demonstrate k&n air filters generally achieve overall filtration efficiency in the range of 97% - 98% while some of our air filter designs have achieved levels as high as 99%. .... we encourage customers to do their homework and be aware of the filtration capabilities of an air filter before they buy. our own testing has revealed wide differences in filtering capabilities. we were surprised to see some disposable paper air filters with an overall filtration efficiency as low as 93%. it appears you selected the worst case for k&n and the best case for paper. you cant assume paper filters are 98%. unless you specify a brand that has been tested that is a mis-leading statement. i dont care what filter you like but your numbers seem to be slanted rather that stating the story as it is. if your only concern is getting a filter with the highest efficiency possible then you should probably find out which paper filters filter the best and use them but you cant just select any paper filter and think you are filtering better than a k&n. also someone mentioned that there is only so much air an engine can inhale. it is true that an engine has a fixed volume for air intake however a more restrictive filter creates a larger vaccuum causing thinner air which results in less oxygen to the engine even though the cylinder has a fixed volume. do you disagree with that thanks. max dodge wrote im not sure where the 98% number for paper comes from unless it relates to a specific brand of paper filter that has been tested or one of the best paper filters that has been tested. you cant just buy any paper filter and feel that you are filtering better than a k&n. the 98% figure for paper and the 97% figure for k&n came from k&ns website and are from testing they claim to have run. if youd like to dispute those two figures youll have to find a place that did an objective test on the k&n. however having looked for such testing in the past youll likely find what i did and that is that k&n does not filter as well as a good paper filter. i know a mustang site did a very comprehensive flow/filtration test on a number of different filters of two basic styles cannister and flat element. they found the k&n to be mid pack on both styles and worse than a couple of the well known brands. good luck in your search. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. the fallacy in mds statements are the numbers he begin with. k&ns efficiencies are between 97-98% with some as high as 99%. he conveniently chose the low end for his math. paper filters are all over the board. even though you cant see any holes some of them are as bad as 93%. im not sure where the 98% number for paper comes from unless it relates to a specific brand of paper filter that has been tested or one of the best paper filters that has been tested. you cant just buy any paper filter and feel that you are filtering better than a k&n. .

it comes as a surprise to many that dr. diesel did not start out to invent an engine to run on diesel fuel but run more efficiently on gasoline. after he and several co-workers were injured in a gasoline explosion in his lab he switched to vegetable oil. the diesel engine was commercially introduced at the paris worlds fair in 1900 running on pure peanut oil. as long as you have a supply of used oil youre in the conservation business. when you run out of discarded oil it will cost you about 2500 btus in petroleum fuels to grow and distribute 1000 btus in vegetable fuels. theres nothing new under the sun. we didnt drill our first oil well until we ran out of whales! rick actually the reason it went to diesel fuel it because the next year in 1901 the first major reserve of oil in the us was discovered in texas. pumping oil out of the ground is easier and cheaper than whale hunting. but now the cost of petrolium is getting too high. there are so many enviornmental issues against the industry. i am sure if they converted over to converting veggies into oil the overall cost would be cheaper. i toss used cooking oil out in a wooded area near my house. the vegetation has never died because of cooking oil. do that with petrolium and everything it touches dies in that spot for months. nerdrevenge wrote by blair goldstein www.advance.com june 24 2005 its a simple recipe mix 10 gallons of vegetable oil with 10 gallons of diesel fuel. bobby tabor has been feeding the unusual mixture to his 1987 cream-colored mercedes benz for almost a week. it fuels his car on the 60-mile commute between his home in appomattox and his car technician job at mb euro service on boonsboro road in lynchburg. theres just one problem though - the smell. i dont notice any difference in the power or performance of the car tabor said. you do get an odor out of the tailpipe and it smells just like it does outside of a mcdonalds. its that charcoaled grill odor. mark barker owner of mb euro service said he didnt know about bobs experiment when he pulled into work monday but he smelled the change. when bobby comes to work we all get hungry barker said. we have to make a breakfast run. tabor said he has been talking to his brother who works in the heating and air conditioning business for almost five years about powering a car with vegetable oil. about three weeks ago they started their experiment. they get used vegetable oil for free from friends working at local restaurants. tabor said the free oil is the only way it is economical for him to use vegetable oil in his car. youre looking at spending $20 to $25 a week on fuel instead of $40 to $45 tabor said. you put $20 in your pocket. vegetable oil can only be used as fuel in some diesel engines. however tabor said he did not have to modify his car at all. in fact tabor said his car would run on pure vegetable oil as long as the temperature of the liquid remains above 160 degrees. the high temperature keeps the liquid thin and ensures that the oil will not congeal. tabor said he keeps his fuel thin by diluting the vegetable oil with diesel fuel. while it is unusual for a car to be driving the highway on vegetable oil it is part of a growing product line of biofuels. biofuels are fuels made from recently living organisms such as potatoes sugar cane and wheat. in an effort to encourage the production of alternative fuels congress is considering a bill that would extend tax incentives for the production of biodiesel a fuel made largely from soybeans. the virginia department of environmental quality estimates that there are about 15 biodiesel suppliers in the state that serve the more than 500 commercial fleets nationwide that use biodiesel. environmental and economic concerns top the reasons people are turning to biofuel. while tabor said he thinks about both his curiosity is the primary reason he experiments with vegetable oil. the car that im driving has 451000 miles on it tabor said. it probably rides better than some of the other cars on the road. .

btw you said the biggest tire i could run on an 02 dually is the 235/85r16. the 05 however has a 17 inch wheel and i cant find any type of aggressive tire in 235/85r17. any suggestions not really... the stock tire size is 235/80r17 and very few manufacturers offer a tire in that size. goodyear general cooper and just last month michelin are about the only ones making a tire in that size. none of those are particularly aggressive. pickings are particularly slim for a 17 rim... this is the price we pay for big brakes .
