My truck smells - coolant problem! - UPDATE

Q: ... for varying definitions of offroad i imagine. sure ive taken the dak 2001 dakota slt across a field and have had an interesting time in some feet of snow. but ive never been four-wheeling it in the australian outback. or any other outback for that matter... these first attempts were pretty wimpy by your standards i imagine but perfect for the newbie i be. both werent part of our original plans but were worth the trips nevertheless. for our first adventure we turned offroad on a 4km there-and-back track. this track had lots of small-rock sections and some bigger rocky sections near the end. rocky creek crossings. some really serious speedbump-like ridges but 4x the height of a normal speedbump - these were actually for diverting water i think - weirs i wouldnt call it a true 4wd road though as i never actually put it in 4 - hi or lo. there was a good bit of bouncing going on tho. aside - my steering wheel just where it meets the dash rattled a lot. is this normal next morning we went off on a completely different track the challenges there were washboard - worse washboard ive ever seen - and some sandy bits but nothing spectacular. i did have to put it in 4hi for this track it seemed to help keep my trucks backside where it belonged on the washboard and of course helped with traction in the sand. today i was at the dealer for an unrelated problem failing radiator cap in another post we got to talking and he was saying the most common problem he sees with 4wd vehicles out here is broken axles. cause accumulated metal fatigue from washboard roads. anyway i had a great time and the dakota was great! didnt bog down in the sand at all and handled the washboard better than any other vehicle ive driven even before i put it in 4hi. though i shouldnt be surprised really it is my first 4x4. ill certainly go with other more experienced 4wd drivers/vehicles with winches g as we explore other roads. having a 4x4 here has opened up whole new horizons for us! yeeha! now all i need is a gps so i dont get totally lost out here jmc .

suddenly without warning fmb exclaimed 05-sep-06 1153 pm suddenly without warning bryan exclaimed 05-sep-06 325 am jmc wrote pretty annoyed my truck seems to be failing by bits. jmc my experience with a failed cap was the rubber washer. it had swollen and wouldnt allow coolant to enter from the coolant recovery tank. in 32f/0c weather the engines temperature would swing wildy. lesson replace the !$%^&* cap when doing cooling system maintenance. that reminds me... per snomans advice i gots to step up to 80/20% coolant/water. while im at it ill tighten the front pump bolts on my manual trans to 150 ft/lb and replace the knock sensor on my v10. after all hes the exspurt ie formerly a drip under pressure. bryan ;- hmmm. the maximum allowed according to my trucks manual is 70/30. dunno what happens if thats exceeded though. jmc if you have been reading all the recent activity here in the garage you would see bryan is poking fun at snoman aka; snowidiot anus asshole snip one of his latest rants was on the % of coolant to use. if you read him at all remember it is just for its hollywood entertainment value. fmb n mexico ps get those pics online please. yea i have been mostly by accident. guess i didnt have my sarcasm radar on pics are up at http//australia.jodi.ws - click on east macdonnell ranges... enjoy! jmc this link worked. great pics thanks for posting them. roy .

coastincarl@gmail.com wrote was running fine during routine shopping. when my wife came out of store the engine would not crank. fuel is no problem it has new fuel pump. i have replaced crank and cam sensors also plugged in new asd relay to no avail. changed coil pack. when i check the firing at plugs it hits one heavy spark and no more at each try. only hits again after ignition is turned off and then back on. please respond with any suggestion. does the starter turn the engine or does it only crank a little then stop turning keep in mind any newer vehicle from about 1985 on up has an on board spark/fuel computer with a variety of sensors- and the only way to effectively check them all is with a special diagnostic computer- which the dealer has- or the better repair garages have. you have to scan the entire system first to be sure all the sensors are working properly. then also do a fuel pump pressure and volume test and a fuel pump relay check- all new cars are fuel injected- so they use an electric fuel pump usually once you eliminate the computer controls and sensors then you can move on to the basic engine diagnosis. 95% of the time its in the computer controls and fuel system. most of the time the problem is electrical or sensors. finally every car should be checked for exhaust backpressure by removing the o2 sensor and running the car with a pressure tester screwed into the o2 tap. many converters come up plugged. my 2002 gm car with 75000 miles on it already had a plugged converter. drive with a plugged converter long enough you burn all the heads off the exhaust valves- due to excessive engine heat- the exhaust cant get out. just a word to the wise. my advice take the car to a shop with diagnostic computer the days of the home grown fixer is over for these new cars. the only thing the average guy can do is brakes change oil trans fluid filters. when it comes to a no run problem forgettaboutit... .

well...lol i just got done geting ready to yank the slant and when under the truck the gast tank strap looked broke..well.. i should never have looked.. frame is as bad as the motor.. broke out and the lip along the bottom broke off on touch..had the person before me not sprayed rock gaurd all over the thing probably would not have rusted out. oh well.....part out time.. thank god i dont have much in it and it came with 4 brand new 31s on it.. thanx all for the advice..ill hold on to all the drivetrain maybe and find a good dodge frame etc.. fu$*ing canadian roads and salt ....cheers on wed 6 sep 2006 103245 -0400 chevrolet lblower@cogeco.ca wrote it was a typo.. it shopuld have read 1985.. the 5 got left out.. it is a 225.. the motor is fudged though..oil by the rings etc from the seize.. i have a 1992 dakota low km motor 318fi that is sitting around.. i will put the 318 in and rebuild the 2 slants i have here. thanx all.. some guy emailed me and said to change the bellhousing and dump a 350 in it.. lol a dodge with a 350 would insult most dodge owners.. but it would be different i agree that it is not a wise pratice to put a chevy motor in a dodge or jeep or ford or a dodge motor is the other brands b

should keep it stock no matter what brand you choose. the 225 is a study engine and back it the 60s you could cut .150 off of head to raise compression 170 and 225 used same head but 225 piston did not come to top of cylinder to keep compression low with bigger stroke as bore was the same if you did this and improved the breathing a bit it would warm up nicely. back in the 60s they had what was called as i recal a hyper pack kit/option for them they added a specail intake and 4 bll carb and boosted the hp well over 200 hp. like other posted said i would keep the 225 and rework it a bit if you want more power as it is a very sturdy motor otherwise. ----------------- thesnoman.com . 222 321616 6yhlg.180$zt1.38@tornado.ohiordc.rr.com watch it roy snowballs is starting to rub on you youre spelling just like him! hehe no shit!! one of those days. im trying to get out the door for work the phone is ringing rge.dog is barking wtf! im a letter off to the left on this key board. must be right eye dominant.g me thinks your new best friend has you all flustered...... denny roy .
