hi guys i have a 98 durango about 57k on it with the 5.9l. ive had a slight noise from behind the dash for awhile a very faint flutter noticable under load. recently its turned into a full blown annoyance sounds most like a kid with a playing card in the spokes of his bike. it sounds like its coming from behind the dash though could be in the engine bay i suppose. i only notice it when im on the throttle the sound increases the more i depress the accelerator. rpm or gear does not matter. cruising down the highway i dont notice it yet. ideas one more question anyone know what the tow capacity will be for the new durango with the hemi thanks paul .

details 1988 dodge truck moter had been rebuilt 2 owners ago mild cam rochester quadrajet modified dual pickup ignition my friend had bought a dodge truck a couple of years back and has had problems with it since she bought it. she had taken it many places for tune ups oil changes ect but some problems have always remained poor idle wouldnt pass emmissions and high gas usage. i decided to look at it myself lately. first addressed the the carberator because she had just got it tuned up. it smelt of gas after turning off used alot of fuel rough starting cold & hot ok acceleration. i got a rebuilding kit took it apart and realized it was custom built it was supposed to have an electronic pump but was replaced with a mechanical one and the airhorn assembly was not the one for that style of body the front vac break assm. cannot open the secondary butterfly fully. i replaced the needle float ect put it back together and it still idles rough although it is eaisier starting and the gas smell has gone. i am going to get another carb we are not interested in preformance so much as economy so i was thinking of getting a used complete quadrajet from a junkyard or does someone recomend an aftermarket i priced the quad at a junkyard for 45.00 an aftermaket holley is 385.00 since the idle was still rough i checked spark plugs they were very worn and carbonized one wire fell apart and they all looked pretty old so i replaced all of them with the plugs since these two components were so bad i checked the distributor cap and roter both pitted very badly so i changed them as well i dont know what kind of tune up was done but i am going to ask after this i notice a defanate change in the overall operation but the idle is still rough like it is missing as before. i got a timing light and checked it. it is no where near the timing scale the if you can amagine the timing mark being at 200 the crank indicator at idle is at 400 turning thr distributor i can get it to about 300 and it hardly wants to run this is advancing it when i rev it up the mark moves advances but sill not even close. the correct timing is 12 deg i think it had mechanical and vacume advance i have checked for vac leaks and found none i did however applied manual vac to the vacume advance and it did not move and i couldnt get a vacume on it is it bad so can anyone tell me 1 how or why the timing mark is so wacked out could someone installed somthing incorrectly 2 how can it be put it in time should i rotate the motor till #1 is tdc and make my oun mark 3 can the carb still be way off and can it effect the timing any help will be greatly appritiated nickpo@comcast.net tb800@comcast.net .

that maybe the caliper slide rails need to be filed down a bit on the new spindle it depends - if the caliper slid into position without much of a problem theyre fine. if you had to hammer them in i might consider grinding them a little. try and use a 9 grinder so you can get contact across the whole rail and try and keep it as straight as possible. with a smaller grinder unless youre smooth and constant youll grind gouges into the rails. or should i just use some high temperature brake rail grease maybe they are sticking since i didnt grease them when i replaced the spindles the rails should always be greased definately. the increase to a 33 tire shouldnt have that much of an effect on the braking so i wouldnt worry about that. bolt the caliper on the spindle without the rotor and make sure it slides back and forth easily. once you get it moving without binding there your brakes should work better. .

well someone has to pay for private healthcare too - you might pay your hmo all your life and never get sick. instead of helping someone who is ill you simply line the shareholders pockets. at least with the nhs you get a sense of doing right by others. the nhs is paid for by national insurance which is a small fixed percentage of income that is paid at the same rate by all rich or poor. i suspect there is a little more community spirit still left over here as i and many others dont begrudge paying national insurance when it means children and the elderly get all the care they need for free. setting up an nhs now for the usa would however be rather expensive and need a large hospital to be built for every town several for every city and a clinic for every suburb - might set you back a bit of cash. see i would go for that but youd never ever see that happen here. rich and poor paying the same rate the libs would hemorrage. when i was poorer i saw private insurance as a necessary evil that i was happy to pay as i was paying for peaceof mind. when i got richer i began to insure myself. a bond the interest on which more than pays for my health needs each year fingers crossed. if something catastrophic happens the bond will cover those bills. i set it up as entity and it is billed by the hospital. i dont have to worry about being turned down for flimsy reasons and am much more in control than with an hmo. and because it is still my money i am much more conscious of health decisions on both ends preventative and medical. at both stages on my life i lived by the motto of self-reliance to the levels at which i could manage it. but a fair system like you say you have id go for that but if the reps ever proposed it theyd be lionized in the press and class envied out of office. expect them to pay their fair share where would it end tell me does one have the option not to part of your nhs pay his own way thats usually the first litmous test in my mind. if somethings mandatory it is usually rigged. .

ahhh i see your definition. in truth nationalisation really involves the creation of a state owned monopoly which would mean for example your govt buying every electricity company in the us lumping them all together and calling it american energy inc or similar. what you describe seems to be simply heavy handed remote control. i agree that it is mere shadow of what you describe i offer it nearly as insight into their wishes and desires as the actions you describe are currently still against the law in terms of the power of the government. i see of course govts can always vote themselves some new rights! that is always true. our system makes that difficult but the dems are very adept at both incremental law change and legislation from the bench using the courts to endrun congress right to make law and the reps are good at using abusing safety fears for greater control. redistribution of wealth. big time. top 50% of wage earners pay 96.09% of income taxes hmmm. . . . . .could you elucidate please. the top half of all american wage earners pay almost all income taxes. nope that probably didnt help. damned irs moved everything around again ill have to go with this link http//www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/menu/irsfigures.guest.html i dont doubt the figures but surely this is precisely what would be expected in a rich economy and dare i say it be desirable from both a social and economic perspective. i dont feel like debating that at the moment. but my point was that the libs are for ever higher rates on the top tax brackets more people on the bottom paying ever lower amounts of taxes and more and more social programs for those unable or unwilling to help themselves. so clearly they believe in and are very efficient at redistribution of wealth. out of interest here low earners pay about 22% income tax and the top rate is 40% even for millionaires - and everyone gets an annual tax free allowance of around $8000 before they start paying tax. how does that compare with the us tax system currently on a federal level state and countries add their own income and other taxes which vary enormously from state to state. alaska actually has a negative tax rate several states have no state income tax and some are heavily taxed. massachusetts is currently 6% and rising the top rate is 37% it was a high at 71% under carter the bottom rate is 15% but that really doesnt tell the picture as 37% pay no tax at all many are actually given money a wonderful wealth redistribution tool called tax credits and as i stated before the top 50% pay 96.09% of the taxes. and then several types of income are taxed completely differently and some are taxed twice. our system is absurdly complex mostly to keep the lawyers employeed and make sure everyone feels like a criminal which makes them easier to control. one interesting aspect of our revenue system is you can ask 50 different irs agents the same question and get upwards of 50 starkly different answers this has been done and documented. but you can see with this kind of a spread on revenue nhs on a tax basis simply is a another aspect of wealth redistribution. yes that is very complex indeed. i earn twice the national average and get to keep around 70% of it which i consider fair in a physically small country with a large population. perhaps a national set of tax levels would be a good idea over there but would be painful to implement. we have tax credits over here too and they seem to be working well. ideally i would favor a national sales tax as the only form of taxation with exemptions on the necessities it would be a boon to everyone and get government largely out of our life not to mention the billions saved in accounting and such. but it would cripple the governments power over us and its ablity to buy favor so it will never happen. state provision of services. dont know how strongly they feel about publicizing everything but they show do go ballistic whenever talk of privitizing something comes up. so what public services are provided by the democrats that arent by the republicans it still looks to me as though you have two right wing parties neither of whom would know socialism if it hit them in the face! ;- ok well just call em 4/5 socialists then.... not even 5% socialists - must try harder. wow if thats 5% then they must whip most kids straight out of the delivery room into a bubblewrap crate designed for safety and health while pushing the few producers to breaking point to keep society going. no too far from one of my concepts of hell. whats good side for the non-leeches you seem somewhat dogmatic - a nations success surely must not only be measured in dollars but also how it looks after its less fortunate citizens and i say this a right wing conservative. where as i believe that a country is only as strong as the intregity of its people. and intregit

papa smurf wrote well someone has to pay for private healthcare too - you might pay your hmo all your life and never get sick. instead of helping someone who is ill you simply line the shareholders pockets. at least with the nhs you get a sense of doing right by others. the nhs is paid for by national insurance which is a small fixed percentage of income that is paid at the same rate by all rich or poor. i suspect there is a little more community spirit still left over here as i and many others dont begrudge paying national insurance when it means children and the elderly get all the care they need for free. setting up an nhs now for the usa would however be rather expensive and need a large hospital to be built for every town several for every city and a clinic for every suburb - might set you back a bit of cash. see i would go for that but youd never ever see that happen here. rich and poor paying the same rate the libs would hemorrage. hehe - weve all got the same body parts - seems fair to all apy the same! when i was poorer i saw private insurance as a necessary evil that i was happy to pay as i was paying for peaceof mind. when i got richer i began to insure myself. a bond the interest on which more than pays for my health needs each year fingers crossed. if something catastrophic happens the bond will cover those bills. i set it up as entity and it is billed by the hospital. i dont have to worry about being turned down for flimsy reasons and am much more in control than with an hmo. and because it is still my money i am much more conscious of health decisions on both ends preventative and medical. at both stages on my life i lived by the motto of self-reliance to the levels at which i could manage it. but a fair system like you say you have id go for that but if the reps ever proposed it theyd be lionized in the press and class envied out of office. expect them to pay their fair share where would it end tell me does one have the option not to part of your nhs pay his own way thats usually the first litmous test in my mind. if somethings mandatory it is usually rigged. oh good grief no! of course its not optional its a tax but i dont think its fair to say its rigged. the funny thing is although it is said that 40 million americans dont have any medical cover in reality they do. the nhs doesnt only offer free healthcare to the british it offers free healthcare to everyone including all americans. a friend of mine from chesapeake was visiting and broke his ankle falling off my land rover and was taken to accident & emergency and treated. next day on being discharged he approached the matron and started sorted through his credit cards much to her amazement! all youve got to do is catch a flight next time you feel ill! -- julian. ---------- general melchett from blackadder describing his regiments coat of arms . . . .two dead frenchmen atop a pile of dead frenchmen. . . . . .

would you agree with the 2003 ram totally negative cr report its an interesting contradiction. i saved the summary here to review http//www.emcreg.org/staging/ram2003.pdf on the first page of this pdf it shows the graphical reliability history for 2002 2003 not compiled yet and all the marks are red circle high rating. but pages 3 and 4 are the summary report and it is nothing but negative. any 2003 ram owners disagree with any of the commentary in the page 3 and 4 summary considering getting one but when a review is that negative.... you have to take consumer reports with a grain of salt but at the same time you cant compeltely ignore it. thanks todd just reading a couple of their opinions makes me completely disregard the entire article. the four wheel discs are by far the best brakes i have used in any truck and the exhaust has a very pleasing light rumble tone. i only have a bit over 1100 miles on my 03 so far but cant complain about a single thing. hd .

i would suspect that the rear bearing is also damaged and needs to be replaced or at a minimum inspected as well. replaced. its damaged no doubt. while i agree that it should be replaced it may be perfectly ok. you also need to drain the rear and inspect the ring and pinion for damage from the ring gear being out of position. im sure you mean pinion gear being out of position right oops my mistake. yes i was talking about the pinion gear being out of position but either way you still need to remove the cover to inspect them. your rear will need to be completely torn down to be repaired correctly. instead of replaced like you said in the previous post i think that you may be confused again. i dont recall ever saying to replace the entire rear but here is yet another failure posted to this group from a truck in the same series and age bracket as mine. seems that there are more failures of this particular rear then you would care to admit to. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

to be a socialist like tony blair or karl marx you need to believe in state ownership of big business. a command economy. redistribution of wealth. that the struggle between the proletariat and bourgeois is a politcal struggle. state provision of services. it still looks to me as though you have two right wing parties neither of whom would know socialism if it hit them in the face! ;- perhaps you need to look a bit closer. im not familiar with the phrase command economy but everything else you mentioned is dead on what the democrats want. really which industries have the democrats nationalised recently if they were socialists a national health service would be top of their list but they dont ssem to have provided one yet. we run into a little trouble with that one. since largely it is us companies fronting the bill for the r&d that provides cheapers better drugs and procedures for the rest of the world it becomes difficult for us to achieve a leechbased healthcare system without putting at least some of the cost on the non-producers. im afraid thats not true. global trade information services show that the us exported 8695 and imported 14309 gbp millions pharamceuticals in 2002. the uk by comparison exported 10031 and imported 7446. we dont put the costs on the non-producers so why would you need to id be very curious to see how pharameceuticals is defined to make that statistic true. same way the us govt defines it. id also be curious to know how many of said drugs are we originally developed or knockoffs thereof. none are knockoffs the uk is one of the worlds leading pharmaceutical developers not some 3rd world sweat shop copying us drugs. us giant pfizer is the worlds biggest pharmaceutical co. with 7.5% of the world market share. glaxosmithkline in the uk have 7.0% of the world market and none of the other us companies comes close. bear in mind that 53% of the worlds patents are registered to uk individuals or companies and a significant part of that is pharmaceutical. i was completely unaware of this. btw i am very much enjoying our conversation. do you have any links that i could look into this with always like to upgrade the worldview where it is flawed. it is rather enlightening isnt it always. it is nearly impossible to have a nice reasoned political arguement any more. both sides are so charged so pissed so wary of being lead it a trap and neither side really listening that mostly it rapidly breakdowns into ridiculous statements and personal attacks. and im just as guilty as this coming in with as much baggage as i have. its been very pleasent to have a discussion that hasnt hasnt imediately been reduced to the im a dickhead no youre a dickhead. level. agreed - i think party politics is treated a little less seriously here and is all the better for it part of why it is taken seriously here is that it is serious. the differences argued might seem little from your vantage point but for me it means how deeply others are allowed to rip into my pocket and for others its how deeply into the trouth they can dig. since i dislike being robbed it upsets me. since others have been taught not to handle things themselves they live in fear of this support being taken away and are angry at the reality of the situation. so angers and fears run high and cloud judegments on all sides. and then the politicians stir up and exaggerate those fears to get votes.... you should remember its only money - nothing worth getting stressed over. there are more important things in life. i personally put a lot of this stress down to inadequate holidays/vacations in the us - you chaps work hard and take no time off to appreciate the finer things in life. most people get around 25 days holiday per year here which is very civilised. but if youve ever watched the british parliament live its hard to take them seriously. on the whole however most mps do a good job of representing their constituencies and have to run an open surgery every week where their electorate have unfettered free access to them to complain about the bins not being emptied or whatever - its great leveller and brings them down to earth! i like that sounds like a great humbler and keeps them more in touch with the people. tough to implement that with such a large population i would think though.. it works out to about 92000 people per mp - how many senators/congressmen are there versus the population over there istr getting the world market share figures for pfizer and gsk from their respective websites and the reference to 53% of the worlds patents being british was actually calculated by the japanese ministry industry in 1996 though i cant find the link currently. shame we are not as good at selling them as we are at inventing them. since this is totally unacceptable to leechvoters and hugely unpopular with those t

i would suspect that the rear bearing is also damaged and needs to be replaced or at a minimum inspected as well. replaced. its damaged no doubt. while i agree that it should be replaced it may be perfectly ok. bullshit. its damaged. if the pinion was wobbling both bearings are trash. got proof if the front bearing fails the pinion will wobble regardless of the condition of the rear bearing yes it should be replaced but it may be just fine and you will never know it until it is removed and inspected. im sure you mean pinion gear being out of position right oops my mistake. yes i was talking about the pinion gear being out of position but either way you still need to remove the cover to inspect them. in this case id bet replacement is needed. even if the either gear survived itll likely have a nice whine to the gearset under load no matter how well the backlash is set. you really are paranoid. you must cost your customers a fortune replacing perfectly good parts. what is the either gear anyway since they are a matched set if one of them has been damaged they must be replaced as a set anyway and in that case the rear pinion bearing would be replaced as well. a simple cleaning and a contact pattern test will determine the condition of the gears if there is no obvious damage to them and if the contact pattern looks good they will be quiet and save him over $100.00 especially if he intends to attempt the repair himself. i think that you may be confused again. i dont recall ever saying to replace the entire rear really here is the entire post subject re rear diff pinion is loose no. it sounds like the front pinion bearing has failed imagine that and will need to be replaced. the rear should also be replaced when this happens. you will -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving end quote lol it this the level of desperation that you have sunk to are you so desperate that you need to use an incomplete post taken completely out of context to make your lame point or is it just that your reading comprehension is that poor did you buy those two degrees that you claim to have but yet are afraid to state what they are in why would i say to replace the front bearing and then the entire rear i was referring to the rear bearing and i think that you know that or else you are dumber than i thought. if i didnt screw up and post it before it was even completed i would have made that sentence clear enough for even you to understand. it seems you did say it needed to be replaced. thats not true. the design is tried and true over the years. rebuilt properly that axle will do just fine. i have already stated that the axle is a well designed unit but no matter how good the design it will only be as durable as its weakest part. it seems that chrysler decided that it needed to cut costs and went with some lower cost bearings and as a result a good rear went bad. but here is yet another failure posted to this group from a truck in the same series and age bracket as mine. seems that there are more failures of this particular rear then you would care to admit to. its not a matter of me admitting anything. again if you think there is a high failure rate i encourage you to find numbers and post them. i was told that by a dealer and i see a high number of posts in here referring to bearing failures in that rear. far more then i see happening in the dana rears used in the 2500 and 3500 series. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

i know a guy who can use bondo or filler to patch up a dent. its a heck of a lot cheaper than having new skins put on a dent in the door and on another small panel. is this worth it will the bondo or filler last bondo is used most effectively to cover minor imperfections with actual body work. trowling it into a large dent will usually result in cracking and failing in a short period of time. if the dent is small enough the body filler will work just fine but if the dent is large bang it out first. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

i have to disagree with consumer reports. they have a bias towards all japanese vehicles. they rarely rate an american vehicle as a recommendtion. i test drove a base tundra eight foot bed 2 door with a six cylinder. it had more noise a bouncier ride less interior room and worse gas mileage hard to believe than the dodge ram 1500 4.7. i decided to go with a real truck and went for the dodge. so far ive been happy. with 3800 miles it has been one of the best cars ive owned it averages about 14.85 mpg with a max of 17.85. i decided that the mileage was pitiful on all trucks including the six cylinder s-10 ranger etc. it sounds enough like a v-8 to let you know its there but then quiets down for cruising. i do agree that the back end does tend to go sideways if you hit a large bump or pothole. i dont know what they mean about hard to read gauges. i find the white guages very easy to read. ive lost most respect for consumer reports when it comes to vehicle rating. i know if its american they hate it and japanese they love it. this is because japanese cars and trucks are just better. as much as it pains me to admit it it is true. look at the latest jd power long term report. now good is that american cars are getting better than the european ones. so there is still hope. http//money.cnn.com/2003/07/08/pf/autos/bc.autos.durability/index.htmcnn=yes .

bitch to remove if the bearing and its race looked ok and the ring and pinion also looked good on my axle i may just replace the front bearing seal and crush sleeve and leave the rest alone. that reduces the job to about an hour as compared to all day. huh it takes about 30 seconds to remove the rear pinion bearing since you have to remove the pinion anyway to remove the front pinion bearing and another 30 seconds to press a new one on. or are you under the impression that you can simply remove the pinion nut yoke seal and pull the front bearing out with your fingers lol if you could pull the bearing race out with your fingers then you really would need a whole new rear. the rear pinion bearing has a direct effect on the pinion depth so if you replace it you will then need to go through the fun of replacing the shims and setting the pinion depth all over again and that takes time. the front pinion bearing has no effect on the pinion depth so if the pinion ring and rear pinion bearing look good you can just replace the front bearing and put it back together without the fun of resetting the pinion depth. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

papa smurf wrote papa smurf wrote papa smurf wrote we both believe similar things then but my belief in my fellow englishmen leads me to trust that their self-respect will allow them only to use entitlement as a last resort whereas you seem to think many americans will immediately give up trying if they can get the basics for free. forty years of experience has shown me that it works that way here. the more that is given the more they not only want but they more that they feel they deserve. pick a random person around my parts and on one hand they are proudly milking the system for what its worth and decrying the rich as selfish greedy and not paying their fair share. its both insane and maddening. of cpurse it doesnt help that the entitlements here are designed to make you more dependant. for instance unemployment discourages working by making it largely an all or nothing deal. you cant work a little and build your way up with slowly reduced benefits because that would lead too many people off the roles and not dependant on the government. the system wants to be milked. i certainly wouldnt criticise what is clearly your experience perhaps i am too much the optimist. the unemployed here get what is called job seekers allowance which is only paid if you can prove you are actively seeking a job and not excluding any offers unreasonably. it seems pretty effective along with our reasonably robust economy keeping unemployment down to 5%. oops hit reply prematurely. technically they have to looking for work but the enforcement on this comes and goes depending on who is in power. and they only have to looking within their speciality. our unemployment has reached the 10 year high of 6.4% which has caused almost orgiastic joy amoungst the press and anti-conservatives. bit less fussy here - you get a little time to find your preferred line of work if not its whatever pays the bills. and perhaps your countrymen give you reason to be more optimistic. ours is ladden with a growing number of social leeches. it should be pointed out by me that this country still has a strong backbone of incredible hard-working caring ethiced people as well. i think the values held by most britons of a strong work ethic and belief in self responsibility are also common in the americans i meet. but then you only meet the ones that have gotten it together enough to travel not the group that hangs out behind the 7-11 each night. very true but i still hang on to my prejudice that at heart the american majority are worthy people who share most of the aims and beliefs that are prevalent throughout our common history. -- i cant disagree with that. america is filled with great people but i am cynical that each generation is less so. my own children were partially home schooled and partially schooled in canada as their mother refused to allow them into the american public school system and made a thorough and incontrivertable case for that opinion. personally i think its the lack of school uniforms in american schools that causes problems - last thing you want in education is independent individuals! -- julian. ---------- general melchett from blackadder describing his regiments coat of arms . . . .two dead frenchmen atop a pile of dead frenchmen. . . . . .

tim im also driving an 03 3500 and somehow we dont seem to have similar trucks. comments inserted tim miser timmiserno@spmyahoo.com wrote in snip i dont understand why their predicted reliability is poor while the reliability history has shown incredible improvement and was excellent in 02. i agree that the seat comfort is average but the ride quality is poor instead of below average in my opinion. the ride quality on a bumpy freeway is horrendous and i really would expect dodge to fix that for the 2004 model. in fact i would say that is the only thing that needs fixing. are you sure that you have your tires inflated properly mine has a firm but quite good ride. yes they are. we have a stretch of i-5 near seattle that has a bump in the expansion joints about every 10 which causes the poor ride. if youve only driven on good to normal roads you wouldnt know the problem exists but on poor freeways its there and its bad. my other trucks on the same stretch of freeway never had this issue. the front seat is fine for medium and short trips but for 6 hour and longer trips it is uncomfortable. both my wife and i enjoy long 10-14 hour trips because of the comfort and support of the 8-way power heated seats. no question your mileage may vary. ive got the 8-way too and am always tweaking it to see if i can find a magical sweet spot. hey ram^3 do you have any complaints about your truck so far i really am happy with mine and with about 12000 miles on it so far im still waiting for one of those little issues that might need some warranty attention. ive never had any new vehicle go this long without something rearing its ugly face. ; -tim .

my best advice this coming from a guy who bought and still have a 78 chysler cordoba get rid of that problem chysler product dont do as i did!!!!!!!!!!! ronm c. e. white wrote for six months i have been trying to help my so fix her mini-van. the mini-van is a 1998 plymouth grand voyager 3.0l v-6 automatic with around 128000 miles. several months back her check engine light illuminated however the car ran ok and the mileage seemed normal. round one - local dodge dealer performed a tune up. mostly new new plugs. light stayed out for a few days. round two - local western auto replaced plugs and wires. light stayed out for a few days. round three - western auto again - replaced plugs again. light was out for a few days. round four - yours truly - used ignition switch method to trigger code read out. got code 43. checked coil resistance compared to manual decided it was not quite right so i replaced it. disconnected battery and the light stayed out for almost a week. round five - used code reader and got p0300 and p0305 codes random misfire and misfire on #5 cylinder. checked plugs they looked fine. i decided that maybe the plug wire was not on correctly. reset light. the light stayed out for almost a week. round six - same codes as before. replaced wires and #5 plug. reset light. stayed out for a couple of days. round seven - same codes as before plus p0306. decided problem might be leaking intake manifold gaskets so i replaced them. reset the light and it stayed out for about three days. round eight - p0300 and p0305 codes again. in desperation i replaced plug #5 with another brand ngk and replaced the o2 sensor with a genuine chrysler part. light stayed out for 3 days but the vehicle did not complete the obdii driving cycle. round nine - dodge dealer again. same codes. dealer performs compression test and says the compression is fine. performs a leak down test and says based on this test the engine is shot and should be replaced - for $4000. round ten - help! $4000 is a lot to but into this van. it is only worth around $4500 in good condition. i am suspicious of the diagnosis that the van needs a new engine. it runs ok. not perfect but no oil usage no smoke idle is little rough but runs smooth at speed. p0305 code usually shows up with a couple of days after resetting the computer. i have certainly driven vehicles that run worse. if i leave the code reader connected to the engine i never see the mis-fire condition. the problem is almost always the same p0300 along with p0305. once p0306 was also found but this was a typical. not fixing the problem is not an option since this is an obdii inspection area. i am willing to try miracle cures...... regards ed white .

yo dude... im there for you! just let me know when and where you are going to throw them nasty old michelin tires out and i will take care of them. think they will fit my truck just fine! i will even trade you my generals with road hazard straight up! dont blame the tire caus as the saying goes.... shit happens... and even to the best! today with 2547 miles on my 2003 quad cab i ended up hitting a piece of disintegrating semi truck tire at 55mph. within 30 seconds i heard a loud constant noise and no one was around me but me so i pulled off to the side and low and behold the left rear tire is flat! so i get the jack out and change it with the spare. no problem the tires must be warranted right i mean they only been in use 30 days for 2547 miles. wrong!! ntb says they are not covered. the michelin warranty book which i finally read says road hazards are excluded in the coverage. what the hell is going on i never buy tires without a road hazard warranty where do these people from michelin have their heads when they sold dodge these tires! ntb will sell me another p245/70 r-17 with balancing mouting etc for $185.14. then the ntb guy has the audacity to try to sell me a road hazard warranty for $14.00 additional. why didnt the dodge dealer provide or sell me an additional road hazard warranty why didnt michelin provide the road hazard warranty why didnt i know this before i finally contacted the ntb dealer and read the tire warranty book i feel screwed not by dodge by michelin! crap like this shouldnt happen when less than a month ago i shell out over $20k for my quad cab! michelin claims they are #1 in customer satisfaction but certainly not in my book!! i am now looking for other tires i just may get rid of all the michelins. a very unhappy consumer! .

of course they do; they all live in china. i love those cheep cheesy chinese made amerikan flags.... john lasy year my son made it to a state championship wrestling competition here in pa. it was held in the johnstown war memorial. the war memorial stadium was built as a shrine to honor those veterans that served in wwii and korea and old war posters photos and banners abound in the place. as we were going to our seats a stadium employee was handing out little plastic american flags so that everyone could wave them during the national anthem. as i was sitting there i was examining the flag and sure enough it said made in china right on the border! considering where we were and why the grand old place was built i just couldnt believe they would hand out chinese flags. i threw mine in the trash on the way out. randy jesus i was just being sarcastic! you mean its true then again nothing is made here anymore nothing! its sickening! and do you know why a whole lot less is made in america nowadays yea greed and on both sides of the fence. first you have the american business men that believe that high profits are the end to all things. it doesnt matter that the company is already making good money if more can be made by any means it is done and the easier the better. then on the other side you have the typical american citizen who has this compulsive need to live beyond their means and always have bigger and better whether they need it or not. hell the growing number of unneeded suvs and the fact that nobody builds smaller houses anymore attest to that. they also usually buy the lowest cost item and have no regard as to where it was made. now when you put these two things together you get what we have now. people buying things totally on the price and companies that in order to maintain profits stay competitive and satisfy their stockholders are moving production and outsourcing labor to foreign countries easiest way to cut costs and that is not a good thing. what both sides fail to see is that they are killing themselves and each other. the customers are hurting the american companies by buying foreign made stuff for nothing more than a dollar or two less than the american one and by doing so reducing the need for american workers. the companies by outsourcing everything to save money the easy way are eliminating needed jobs and are in effect eliminating their own customer base. the economic boom of a few years ago shows that american companies employing american workers increase the customer base and americans buying american products when they can creates more good paying jobs but then again people may have to give up a few things here and there and we cant have that now can we. i would have put in terms of competitive forces but greed. and i would have added a hug section on the governments and unions role in driving up the costs of making products in america creating the almost insurmountable difference in the cost of home vs. foreign manufacture. but otherwise that was pretty much were i was headed. no speeches for me today i guess .

a quick way to check the timing chain is to pull the distributor cap ignition off of course and rotate the engine backwards until the rotor just barely moves then watching how far you have to move the crankshaft balancer rotate it forward until the rotor again barely moves. if you have to turn the balancer more than a few degrees more than 5 degrees then the chain and/or sprockets are worn out. budd toivo maki wrote thanks to budd and denny for the good advice. i know im replying to my own message but im in a hurry . . . without going into detail on my thought process let me just say that using your advice i advanced the base ignition timing 10 degrees and havent had a backfire in the last couple of hundred miles of driving. more power better acceleration - it actually runs just about the way it is supposed to. i think a valve job is in order. i know this just bought me a little time but this engine is going to have a complete top end rebuild in a few weeks so a little time is what i needed. thanks again. t maki .

laddercapt wrote sorry...forgot to mention i had the 3 year/36000 warranty so that rules out dealer repair at no cost to me. when it quits playing the digital clock still shows the correct time so there is still power going to the radio. if i read your 2 choices for possible problems correctly neither is something i could fix myself. maybe ill swing by an electronics store and price another radio. ill assume that there are enough radio shapes that manufacturers offer some type of face plate to fit my vehicle and radio choice. there are only a few manufactures of radios that are designed to fit the chrysler size. that size is din 1.5 i believe. most stereos in all other cars are din 1. it is very easy to buy a bezel kit that accepts a din 1 radio and mounts to the dodge ram opening. they are inexpensive maybe $15 or so. another thing you will need is a wiring harness. this plugs into the rams wiring harness and allows easy connection to a new stereo without having to splice into your rams wiring. any car stereo store will have the items you need for a nice finished look. .

according to your spelling of the word enviromentalist you dont seem to be educated. please change your e-mail address to uneducatedrepublican@yahoo.com much like the hitler rule when you are down to criticizing spelling youve truly run out of ideas. i love my v-10 sittin way up high. the power is unimagined and i feel heroic singing to lee greenwood. i like to push the guy ahead in the liberal econobox. even more when i have my headlights on blinding his mirrors! god made this country great so we could have power on demand because its all about us. god told rush that only he can change warming so my little output dont matter. if the enviros ban big motors we will be robbed of our power rights so write to your repesentatives or just crush the next subaru you see! steve .

steve why are you going with the centerforce clutch if the factory disc is not slipping denny since a group is by nature an open forum i just wanted to voice my opinion on the topic of the 4.7l sohc engine. i have seen a lot of people bash that engine in the ram 1500 quad cab. one poster even suggesting that it is useless at pulling a load in excess of 2000 pounds. i have to wonder if this is opinion or that said posters have actually driven a ram 1500 qc with the 4.7. either that or the automatic transmission dodge is putting in these trucks is a total piece of shit. for what it is worth i have a 2003 dodge ram 1500 quad cab slt 4x4 with the 4.7l sohc engine the 5-speed manual transmission and 3.92 gears in the rearend with the limited slip option. i have had it for 1 month now and have about 4200 miles on the odometer. over the last month i have averaged 15mpg in daily driving it has actually been improving as the miles passed the 2000 mark and the one trip i took to virginia earned me an 18.7mpg. i have a 3200 pound 20 boat and trailer combination that i tow with it regularly and have no trouble maintaining 70mph or better even on a grade. yes i do have to shift a lot to keep the engine in the meat of its powerband and 5th gear is usually out of the question when towing unless the road is completely flat or downhill. as yet i have only two complaints about the truck 1 i find the way the rear end hops at the slightest bumps unnerving dont give me that its a truck crap either my 2000 chevrolet silverado extended cab didnt do this why should the dodge 2 the goodyear all-season tires that came on it suck they will be replaced shortly. so to all considering a truck like this if you know how to drive a stick get one. i have had no power problems with this motor and tranny combination. in fact it is quite quick provided you are not squeemish about revving it to 5500 rpm before shifting. this motor is quite flat below 2000 rpm. in fact it doesnt really wake up until 3000. just my 2 cents but i am quite happy with 4.7l and the 5-speed manual. it is a good combination. i am considering the jba shorty headers volant cold-air induction and a borla exhaust system. if you believe the power gain claims on www.truckperformance.com for these components my truck should be around 300hp with these additions. well see. also centerforce is working on a replacement clutch for this. a centerforce clutch doesnt make anymore horsepower but allows you to put more of it to the rear wheels. ill let you all know how it works out. -- steve - fuquay varina north carolina .

of course they do; they all live in china. i love those cheep cheesy chinese made amerikan flags.... john lasy year my son made it to a state championship wrestling competition here in pa. it was held in the johnstown war memorial. the war memorial stadium was built as a shrine to honor those veterans that served in wwii and korea and old war posters photos and banners abound in the place. as we were going to our seats a stadium employee was handing out little plastic american flags so that everyone could wave them during the national anthem. as i was sitting there i was examining the flag and sure enough it said made in china right on the border! considering where we were and why the grand old place was built i just couldnt believe they would hand out chinese flags. i threw mine in the trash on the way out. randy jesus i was just being sarcastic! you mean its true then again nothing is made here anymore nothing! its sickening! and do you know why a whole lot less is made in america nowadays yea greed and on both sides of the fence. first you have the american business men that believe that high profits are the end to all things. it doesnt matter that the company is already making good money if more can be made by any means it is done and the easier the better. then on the other side you have the typical american citizen who has this compulsive need to live beyond their means and always have bigger and better whether they need it or not. hell the growing number of unneeded suvs and the fact that nobody builds smaller houses anymore attest to that. they also usually buy the lowest cost item and have no regard as to where it was made. now when you put these two things together you get what we have now. people buying things totally on the price and companies that in order to maintain profits stay competitive and satisfy their stockholders are moving production and outsourcing labor to foreign countries easiest way to cut costs and that is not a good thing. what both sides fail to see is that they are killing themselves and each other. the customers are hurting the american companies by buying foreign made stuff for nothing more than a dollar or two less than the american one and by doing so reducing the need for american workers. the companies by outsourcing everything to save money the easy way are eliminating needed jobs and are in effect eliminating their own customer base. the economic boom of a few years ago shows that american companies employing american workers increase the customer base and americans buying american products when they can creates more good paying jobs but then again people may have to give up a few things here and there and we cant have that now can we. i would have put in terms of competitive forces but greed. and i would have added a hug section on the governments and unions role in driving up the costs of making products in america creating the almost insurmountable difference in the cost of home vs. foreign manufacture. but otherwise that was pretty much were i was headed. no speeches for me today i guess competitive forces are at best nothing more than another motivational force. as for the governments and union roles in driving up the costs lets also remember that they are a symptom of a higher problem not the direct cause. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

so want it or not you need to become somewhat knowledgeable on things that might need repair. at least to the point of evaluating truthfulness and logical completeness of what the repairmen suggest. could not have said it better. one needs to know what one should know or youll be defenseless in the midst of a pack of wolves and vultures. they know that car mechanics and the like probably take them for a ride every now and then. ignoring the initial hazing in this group is easy for an old hand like me. i had a similar story with an a/c professional when my house a/c broke. before calling prof. help i spent two hours trying to diagnose why the furnace fan did not work. i settled on the speed controller not working based on voltmeter measurements. i then called one guy to look at it. he says we need to replace the board. he said it very confidently. i asked him what evidence did he have that the board was bad. he started mumbling etc. just like your service manager suggesting to replace the parts with no evidence opf their failure. i then decided that he was just trying to rack up his work hours and hired someone else. who originally installed the furnace the other guy figured it all out and replaced the speed controller now everything works great. i think that he probably understood that bullshitting me is not going to get him very far. or maybe he was a naturally honest upstanding repairman. at any rate he will get my future business. there is an awful lot of crooks who repair things that customers do not understand car mechanics etc etc. not all of them are such but i have yet to meet an honest car mechanic. meaning someone who would not lie to me about condition of components would not suggest unnecessary repairs etc. consequently i do almost all work on my truck myself. if there was an honest car mechanic who had reasonable rates i would prefer a professional to do maintenance etc. so want it or not you need to become somewhat knowledgeable on things that might need repair. at least to the point of evaluating truthfulness and logical completeness of what the repairmen suggest. i ramman@dodgecity.cc wrote seems refrigerant loss on the 97 is a common problem. mine seems to lose not quite a full pound between summers always requiring just under a can to recharge it at the start of the cooling season. ive been adding a little every summer since it was 2 years old. finally last month i took it in to mr. dodgewrench for its 60k mile checkup and asked them to check the a/c. they said it was low on refrigerant doh but were unable to find the leak and suggested replacing the compressor ! i asked if they would guarantee that would fix it and the svc mgr said no. he would guarantee the compressor for 90 days but not that it would solve the leak. i told them unless they can positively find the leak and isolate it as definitely being in the compressor that the only way theyre going to replace it is if/when it finally fails. but then his tune changed and suddenly he was almost certain the compressor was the cause and i should have it replaced before it goes out completely. give me a freakin break! the truck only has 61000 miles on it. anyway because i wouldnt agree to let them replace the compressor he wouldnt recharge the system because he said it had a leak even tho his a/c man couldnt find it. yup its a racket but we kinda knew that didnt we so back to wally world for my annual purchase of a can of r134a. my a/cs been fine since. for the a/c tekkies out there heres the symptoms a/c clutch cycling on/off every 1-2 seconds or so vents blowing warm air. suction line feels a little cooler than ambient temp but barely. added 1 can r134a. within 2-3 secs of opening the valve the clutch locked in solid. within a minute the vents were blowing cold and the suction line was almost ice cold dripping w/condensate water. that was a month ago. still working fine. if its anything like last year and the 2 years before that it wont need gas again until next summer. i know this is not what the tree huggers and gas passers want to hear but its what works. writes tom lawrence wrote my a/c isnt working in my 97 ram pu and i noticed that the a/c clutch does not come on and drive the compressor at all. i checked to see if it spins and it does. is their a way to test the clutch their is a 2 prong electrical plug leading too it and is it just a matter of putting 12 volts on it disconnect the connector on top of the accumulator cylinder-looking thing next to the firewall on the passenger side - has a/c hoses coming out of it and stick the ends of a paper clip into the connector the part on the wire not the part left in the accumulator. with the engine running and the climate controls in the a/c position if the clutch engages youre low on refrigerant and need to get the leak found fixed and the
