My Rant....Timing chain loose at 30,000 miles
From : m foley
Q: hi i have a dodge dakota 1997 with 30000 miles. it seems the timing chain is loose. i took the piece of shit vehicle to a mechanic and he informed me that there was a service bulletin that indicated this fix was 4.6 hours and a chain idler would be retrofitted to the vehicle. i then took the wonderful vehicle to the dealer in my area to ask if this fix was under a recall. my basis for asking this question was if the fuckin engineers would have correctly designed the vehicle with a chain idler i woundnt have to pay for their incompetence. i will never get out of this situation without paying for this problem. id just like to say american made vehicle are a joke. im not a fan of japanese products but their starting to look good. other problems 1 4 year old battery turns to shit 2 ic chip dies and im sitting in the middle of the highway with a dead truck 3 fuel pump dies and costs $350 because they mounted the pump inside the tank. great idea to engineer the vehicle with the pump in the tank. 4 font bumper paint is falling off. 5 the detent for the automatic transmission is not positive. sometimes its in and sometimes its not. 6 timing chain screw-up. im thinking i could solve all these problems by buying a new dodge with a hemi. more power should eliminate all these problems. ps the dodge line of trucks looks great ..........too bad the engineering and durability are second class. .

i have a 94 ram 1500 that had a similar problem. the gauge would quickly move down to half a tank after only 100 miles of driving then would move slowly down to empty over the next 200 miles. after another 6 months it had troubles starting. turned out it had a dying fuel pump. the in tank pump assembly contained the filter pump and fuel level gauge. so once that was replaced everything worked fine including the fuel gauge. john hi i have a 98 2500 5.9l 24 valve 4x4 automatic. i have a problem with the fuel guage not reading correctly below half tank. does anyone know the fix for this problem i was going to order the tsb from dodge but they want to sell the whole year and i could put the 24.00 toward the fix. thanks in advance bill .

might be a good idea to buy a locking gas cap. wonder if someone dump some crap into your tank good luck yonzie maybe get csi to run a test on the substance found in your carb denny wddodge@woh.rr.com wrote sugar does not dissolve in gasoline so this goo could not be sugar. it is really hard to say what it is without getting a sample checked out. you are going to have to clean out the carb again replace the filter drop the tank and clean it out good. before hooking all the lines back up blow them out with compressed air. it probably wouldnt hurt anything to spray a couple of cans of chem-tool thru the lines to be sure theyre cleaned out good. denny as the subject reads i have a 1988 dodge pickup with a 2-barrel carb on a slant six. it ran fine until a short time ago when it started running rough and hesitating. eventually it died and would not restart. i replaced most all the ignition system and still had no luck. gas in the carb started it so i removed carb and rebuilt it. it was then that i found white goo in the float chamber. truck ran fine after reinstalling carb for about 10 minutes. then same problem again. removed the carb and found more white goo. cleaned out the carb replaced the fuel filter and reinstalled everything again. ran fine again for about 10 minutes then stopped. removed carborator and again more white goo. i suspect that someone has put sugar in the tank but have no experience in this. does this sound right no sure what the better solution is. any input would be appreciated. poorgeorge .

since i doubt that they would use separate fuses for each mirror heater i doubt that it is the fuse. the first step would be to check for power at the mirror. you should have done that when you had the door panel off. if you are getting power in the door then the heater element has burned out. if not then check for power in the cab behind the kick panel. sometimes the wires break from flexing back and forth in the door jam. you can also check the heater element by measuring the resistance that it has. it should only be a few ohms at most and look more like a short. infinite resistance indicates a cooked element. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving the problem im having with my truck is the passenger mirror works but the drivers side doesnt. i tried it again the other day and could feel heat on the passenger side mirror whereas the drivers side is still cool. i had the door panel off and looked to see if a connection plug was undone but that wasnt so. i dont know which fuse the mirrors could be hooked into. there is no rear window de-fogger in this truck for it to be hooked with. if its a fuse which one im not sure if its the heating element either anybody familiar with dodges or this problem id appreciate any help. .

1. truck was not driven enough to keep a good charge on the battery all the time. very few batteries sold last more than 48 months in most climates. 2. just one of those random electronic failures. could have been easily caused by a large solar flare or other natural source. 3. another failure due to leaving the truck sit. fuel gummed up on the pump and caused it to fail. especially if you used shell gasoline during the bad formula they were using. btw if you have many shell receipts and send them the information and it was within certain dates they will pay for your repair. almost all manufactures now have the fuel pump in the fuel tank!!!! no matter what brand keeps the pump cooler. 4. rock chips left unattended. or an actual problem with the paint. fyi chrysler has been repainting some 97 black bumpers for free. 5. did you always pull the shift level all the way back to shift or did you wear it out by forcing it to move when not shifting correctly 6. the only one possible failure in the engineering of the engine. other problems 1 4 year old battery turns to shit 2 ic chip dies and im sitting in the middle of the highway with a dead truck 3 fuel pump dies and costs $350 because they mounted the pump inside the tank. great idea to engineer the vehicle with the pump in the tank. 4 font bumper paint is falling off. 5 the detent for the automatic transmission is not positive. sometimes its in and sometimes its not. 6 timing chain screw-up. .
