Musty Air Conditioner Odor

Q: won tue 26 jul 2005 182956 -0400 julio nospamhere@home.net wrote hey all ! i replaced my condensor about a month ago and recharged the system w/a freon and oil combo set with the single gauge setup. all was fine and cold enough then 2 days ago i fired up the truck and the unit was not blowing cold air just cool so i grabbed the single gauge and tested the low side and it read the same as after i initially refilled system. the clutch kicks in intermittently for about 4 seconds and shuts off for about 4 seconds quite consistently. seems like the low on freon symptom. i tried to put a little more freon in but noticed that it didnt seem to help the on then off syndrome. i did not overfill at this point the gauge still being in the blue. is there a solenoid or switch to check or replace for this condition it is hot as hell out here. i dont want to get ripped off by some shop as i was hoping to remedy this and sell this great little truck with 200k miles for a new yellow hemi slt while the incentives are on. any suggestions thanks julio well i guess the system needs a pro - hopefully just an inexpensive fix. 200k and a 98 dont add up to a whole new sytstem rebuild by some butcher shop. that is why i inquired here for help to do it youself if it is posssible. ill post results - thanks all with the proper knowledge tools and $$ for the tools you can do anything. you are looking at about $1800.00 for a recovery system guages and scale to weigh what comes out and what goes in. some local colleges provide a cource on auto ac maintenance and repair. -- coasty remove the spooge to reply .

tom lawrence wrote both engines have good reliability records... the 5.9ls potential problem area is the intake manifolds bellypan or plenum gasket - its prone to leaking allowing the engine to suck in and burn oil. its a relatively simple problem to fix if it does occur. wasnt that corrected in 2001s and newer 2000 is when the tsb went out to the dealers regarding that issue and im almost positive it was for 2000s and prior. i cant recall anyone with a 2001 and newer 5.9l having that problem. as for fuel economy the 4.7l will beat out the 5.9l. a co-worker drives a 00 durango 4x4 with the 5.9l and he gets a little better than 13mpg with mixed driving. id expect a couple more mpgs out of the 4.7l. a few ive talked to seem to report only 1 or 2mpg better with the 4.7l. i greatly prefer the 5.9l. is it true the 4.7l uses a timing belt rather than chain heard that somewhere. if so that would suck. someone correct me if im wrong but i belive the 4.7 uses a timing chan system simmular to the 2.7 v6 .

fresh smelling a/c results guaranteed ingredients 1 pint of common ordinary rubbing alcohol 3 long 3/8 copper tubing with a short j bend at 1 end 1 small funnel connect the j end of the copper tubing to the air conditioner condensate drain hose under the vehicle the thing that drips water. stick the long end of the tubing up through the engine compartment so you can reach it from above. the copper tubing must be long enough to extend above the center of the dash. now pour the rubbing alcohol into the upper end of the tubing using the funnel. continue adding more alcohol until it starts to spill over onto the floorboard of the car or truck. dont worry the alcohol will evaporate and wont harm the carpet. this will backflush the system and kill the mold & mildew spores. now disconnect the copper tubing. if desired you can collect the alcohol in a cake or pie tin as it drains back out and reuse it again. a/c now all nice and fresh again guaranteed. now to keep it nice and fresh switch your a/c over to max heat about 1/2 block before stopping for the day every day. this will dry out the system and prevent the mold and mildew from ever forming. ramman uscgretspooge.comcast.net writes the must odor is coming from the cooling coil caused by the buildup of mold mildew dust and dirt embedded into the coil. that spray stuff just temperoralrily masks the problem. a true no rinse coil cleaner is the only true and correct method of correcting the problem. on the average there is about 3/4 of a cup of junk on the coil bad for the health and one of the biggest problems in the industry. .
