Mike Simmons still around? need some help again... emissions!

From : rifter

Q: i just got back from the emissions testing station. i failed of course even after all the hard work sweat and nagging from the wife. shes already upset about the $300 i spent to change out all the brakes 98k miles on the factory originals. shes upset that it didnt pass as she was wanting to go buy a bunch of furniture and building supplies this weekend for that im kind glad it didnt pass ;- . anyway its an 85 ram 100 318 2-bbl etc. the results from the emissions are hc standard 1.6000 reading 4.5307 co standard 40.0000 reading 67.6277 no standard 4.5000 reading 2.3036 co2 no standard but reading was 547.3137 this is all grams per mile. the engine runs fine with a little bit of a lope on occasion. i figure maybe a slight tune up would have done the job. but i was wrong. new cap rotor plugs fresh gas timing set to standard on the hood decal vacuum reading 15 on the manifold new pcv valve. i have been suggested two things so far get a new rebuilt carb or get a new cat converter or both. seeing as i dont want to sink an awful lot more money into this beast im looking for the simplest and most effective way to get it up to pass. i also cant drive it around since the tags are expired. thanks for any help you fellers can give me! -josh .

hc standard 1.6000 reading 4.5307 = too much fuel co standard 40.0000 reading 67.6277 confirms above no standard 4.5000 reading 2.3036 usually higher as engine leans out.... probably means you are running too rich the engine runs fine with a little bit of a lope on occasion. i figure maybe a slight tune up would have done the job. but i was wrong. new cap rotor plugs fresh gas timing set to standard on the hood decal vacuum reading 15 on the manifold new pcv valve. the low vacuum reading concerns me. tune your carb using a vacuum guage. adjust the two idle mixture screws until best vacuum is reached. adjust idle speed using the screw on the throttle shaft. re set timing according to instructions on label. 15 inches of vacuum is too low usually you can achieve 19-25 with a good stock engine. i have been suggested two things so far get a new rebuilt carb or get a new cat converter or both. since your cat may be plugged the low vacuum could be a symptom of this its a possibility. the new carb probably will not help since you say the engine runs fine. thanks for any help you fellers can give me! remember without knowing all of the finite details and data all we can do is give an educated guess. some of this stuff may not help some of it may cure the problem. max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan .

max340 wrote hc standard 1.6000 reading 4.5307 = too much fuel my thoughts exactly. maybe its time to freshly rebuild the carb. it got rebuilt about 15 months ago ran for a day or two then set on the engine for a good while until about 2 weeks ago. co standard 40.0000 reading 67.6277 confirms above thats what the pamphlet the emissions station gave me says. no standard 4.5000 reading 2.3036 usually higher as engine leans out.... probably means you are running too rich the engine runs fine with a little bit of a lope on occasion. i figure maybe a slight tune up would have done the job. but i was wrong. new cap rotor plugs fresh gas timing set to standard on the hood decal vacuum reading 15 on the manifold new pcv valve. the low vacuum reading concerns me. tune your carb using a vacuum guage. adjust the two idle mixture screws until best vacuum is reached. adjust idle speed using the screw on the throttle shaft. re set timing according to instructions on label. 15 inches of vacuum is too low usually you can achieve 19-25 with a good stock engine. i was thinking 15 was good for some reason. looks like ill be tuning the engine a little this week. i also pulled all the plugs and rechecked the gaps. i missed one that was twice what it should have been. i have been suggested two things so far get a new rebuilt carb or get a new cat converter or both. since your cat may be plugged the low vacuum could be a symptom of this its a possibility. the new carb probably will not help since you say the engine runs fine. thanks for any help you fellers can give me! remember without knowing all of the finite details and data all we can do is give an educated guess. some of this stuff may not help some of it may cure the problem. hey and educated guess is better than no guess at all. at least it puts me in the ballpark! max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan hooah! .
