Memorial Day

Q: rudyxhiebert@yahoo.com writes owners manuals and car dealer insist on 5000 miles or as in canada 8000 kms. or six months - whichever comes first. i had mine analyzed after using it for 13000 kms and seven months and the report showed that it was still ok. the issue as i understand it is that the oil becomes contaminated with microscopic particles and combustion residue. besides clogging the filter it becomes thicker and so therefore presents more of a burden for the oil pump to circulate. even at the manufacturers recommended 5000 miles it gets pretty gooey and by which time the filter has also become clogged. changing oil at 3000 mile intervals as recommended by all of the various oil change shops and most dealerships only serve to embellish their receivables. funny story an old family aquaintance at one time owned a miller beer distributorship in danville il altman distributing and had 4 beer trucks on which he paid to have the oil changed every 1000 miles! the small independent garage next door kleins garage that did all of altmans mech. service on the trucks used to keep some of the used oil in a big barrel called altman oil which the garage owner would subsequently put into his own cars. if you want to change something early change the filter and then add another quart or 1/2 quart of oil depending on what was lost in the filter change. many years ago i.e. back in the 40s 50s and even into the 60s it was quite common to only change the filter at every other oil change. isnt it interesting how flawed that line of thinking was even today with modern oil and synthetics the filter usually fails long before the recommended mileage interval to change your oil. why anyone would only change their oil and not replace the filter completely baffles me. im also unsure what the 6-months or whatever comes first is all about. the oil only breaks down and/or becomes contaminated from being used. it doesnt wear out or separate or lose its lubrication qualities from just sitting there. anyone know what the line of reasoning is behind this recommendation .

i saw your link about the beartooth. that sucks yeah my old hs buddy doug and i were gonna start out in denver drive up to red lodge do the beartooth then ynp and out the n entrance then spend a few days re-tracing l&cs route across the mountains from near present-day dillon mt across the lemhis to the salmon river then across the lost trail pass then over the lolo pass to the columbia watershed sounds awesome.. shit..........the bt is such a great drive; now well have to go thru f*cking cody little jackson and over the chief joseph might take a dead-end run up to the top of the bt just for grins if they even open the western side this year the museum in cody is awesome. the first time we stopped there i spent 4-5 hours following the family thru the arts side--bored as hell and damned near took a nap on a bench.i didnt notice the other side till we was walking out. the next day i spent the 4-5 hours going thru the good side and who knows where all the women went. what really gets me is when i get talking and find out how many relocated easterners are out there.the first year we went west we stopped for a week in the big horns. the guy that owned the place we stayed at was from cleveland. i run into that alot out there. denny .

leroy this sounds similar to a problem i had with a chevy. turned out to be a bad voltage regulator. be driving along and it would just shut off then after a brief period restart. gm had a recall on their alternators and replacing it fixed my problem. the voltage regulator would skip a beat and shut the entire system down. dont know if this applies to dodges but it may be worth looking into. hth. bill 1992 dakota 318 a/t will intermittently shut down if i am travelling at road speed the engine continues to turn and in approx 8-10 seconds it will start back up own its own. its just same as if you turned the ignition off and back on except.when it happens the tach falls to zero and the maint reqd light goes off it has been on for some time but all of the other guages continue to register normally. it has been doing this for about a year and nobody has been able to find it. the distributer module was replaced .. waste of money. it acts exactly like some circuit breaker is tripping then resetting itsself. it is totally intermittent. it may do it once/month or several times/day. can find no commonality like i just hit a bump or am in a hard turn or whatever except -- maybe -- it seems to be more frequent during hotter weather. if it was the fuel pump then the tach and ck eng lamp should not shutdown. if it was the ign switch then all of the other guages should quit. also or am i wrong about that have checked the batt cables tugged and pulled on all harnesses with it idleing have looked and puzzled and beat on everything in sight under the hood have cursed and jumped up and down. i have a factorty manual have studied the wiring diagrams for circuit breakers etc can find none. the thing has got me stumped. any help/suggestions appreciated. thanks in advance. so many garys and clydes ..so.. leroy .
