with a large truck i would go diesel. if you decide on a dodge run away if they try to sell you an automatic. the cummins is a great engine but the dodge automatic transmission is criminally unreliable. charles perry p.e. .

the new 48e transmission is supposed to be a highly beefed up version of their old 4 speed automatic. the old ones have held up well with gas engines but not so well with the cummins especially with cummins that have been tuned for more torque. dodge is offering the new 48e with the ho cummins torque monster so time will tell. i was at the local dodge dealer today getting the cat replaced. while i was standing there waiting for my ride to show up a brand new diesel ram drove up. wow! those trucks are quiet! i didnt even know it was a diesel at first. extra point for cummins for making their so quiet..... how do the transmissions hold up in the diesels i have been told it eats through them like candy. auto trans that is .

the response from cdr appears to be from someone misinformed about the cummins diesel. before you consider any of these three brands read the discussion forums dedicated to the three brands http//www.turbodieselregister.com/ http//www.thedieselstop.com/ http//www.thedieselpage.com/ diesel! if you are going for the bigger truck you will be disappointed in fuel mileage on a regular gasoline engine.even the v-10 on fords it is a fuel leak loaded empty. also the duramax diesel is foreign and has aluminum blocks stay away from the fire! and you wont get burned dodge has the cummins diesel and if you like going slow and not pulling much weight go there. the f-250 or f-350 is a truck! im cross-posting here to try to solicit your opinions on the type of trucks you drive. im in the market to buy a new truck and am just now starting to compare my choices for the pros and cons. im considering the dodge ram 2500 ford f-250 and the silverado 2500 all 4 doors. i would like to hear from those that already own these models as to your likes and dislikes and also what you wish it had or didnt have as far as features and capabilities. also diesel vs. gasoline. im hoping to make a purchase within the next 7 to 10 days. im currently driving a 97 suburban and will be trading it. may also consider buying a new 03 or 04 suburban as well. any drivers out there willing to add your two-cents worth on this one thanks for your help and input. danny .

mike let me add my 2 cents worth. i made the mistake of installing a sunroof on my truck 79 d-150 because of the lack of a/c and i regret it. because the cab has different aerodynamics than a car roof it draws hot air in instead of removing it it leaks because it has poorly made seals and its a pita to keep clean. but ymmv budd mike simmons wrote jason i suspect the reason chryco doesnt offer a sunroof on these vehicles is that they feel that the demand does not warrant the additional cost to engineer one. i would strongly recommend against having an aftermarket sunroof installed on any vehicle! chryco service manager member sae is there anything inherently bad about a sunroof on a a truck that keeps dodge from offering a sunroof on dakota or ram is the result body flex or somehting that keeps the truck from truckin has anyone had a sunroof installed on their dakota or durango i would appreciate any feedback on this topic. thanks jason .

i hav an f350 with the 7.3 diesel and am quite happy with it. i think the dodges have the best looking rig - that front end is great! but i understand the dodge doesnt hold up - brakewise chassis-wise. a friend just bought a new 2500 with the cummins and it is quiet! standing a few feet away when it is idling and you cant tell it is a diesel. the duramax is an isuzu engine - theyve been making diesels for about 100 years. and the allison tranny is well respected. spend the extra bucks for a 350 vs. the 250 if you go ford. much better resale. if i were bying new right now i would llike to buy a dodge that would match the f550 specs. unfortunatley only ford is in that market. should run a google search opinions are posted in the groups everyday everybody has one. blair im cross-posting here to try to solicit your opinions on the type of trucks you drive. im in the market to buy a new truck and am just now starting to compare my choices for the pros and cons. im considering the dodge ram 2500 ford f-250 and the silverado 2500 all 4 doors. i would like to hear from those that already own these models as to your likes and dislikes and also what you wish it had or didnt have as far as features and capabilities. also diesel vs. gasoline. im hoping to make a purchase within the next 7 to 10 days. im currently driving a 97 suburban and will be trading it. may also consider buying a new 03 or 04 suburban as well. any drivers out there willing to add your two-cents worth on this one thanks for your help and input. danny ----== posted via feed.com - unlimited-uncensored-secure usenet ==---- http//www.feed.com the #1 group service in the world! 100000 groups ---= 19 east/west-coast specialized servers - total privacy via encryption =--- .

the tires may be simply out of balance the inflation pressures could be wrong but another thing that no one else has mentioned is this; any allignment shock or front end problem will cause the most severe wear to develop on new tires due to the give that the deeper tread has. this is especially a problem on 4x4 trucks. to top it off once the wear pattern develops the rate of wear will actually accelerate until the tires are rotated. although your owners manual may call for rotation every 7500 miles to gain the optimum wear from a set of tires it is advisable to rotate at 3k to 5k then every 5k. once youve put 20-25k on the set you may not need to rotate them nearly as often. ok i went a little long on rotating my tires. they have 15k on them. before i rotated them there was no problem and a smooth ride but after rotating them it shakes the snot out of you between 60 and 70 mph. was it too late to rotate will it smooth out over time or should i put them back where they were and forget rotating them. p265 75r 15 criss cross rotation. thanks. .

you are obviously confused with carburetion day at indy speedway those cars dont use carburetors either your definition is obselete the subject of your original question is non existent also ie it does not happen carburation is defined as the process of mixing the correct proportions of liquid fuel with air to achieve combustion. this happens on any vehicle that uses liquid fuel. i .

your welcome do me a favor and check your rear end fluid level also.....im just curious. thanks -- moparman----remove clothes to reply hey thanks for the post. i had my hemi in for the 9000 mile service oil/filter change. i had read this the morning before i picked the truck up. i cranked up the engine started reading the work done and there is was....up to 5 quarts of oil was added to your engine....well i just shut it down right in the middle of the service bay and pulled the dip stick...sure enough the dang thing was low below the operating range. if it had not been for this post and others like it..... i was getting ready for a 600 mile run to ky i dont want to think about running the engine two quarts low through the mountains and plains at 65 to 75 mph. anyway just want to thank you and the group for the information that newbees like me get from this group! thanks marshall i had mine done at the dealer when i had the 18k service on my 03 2500hd hemi...they rotated and balanced the tires. on the work order it said the air pressure in each tire was 41 pounds. i had 70 pounds in the rear as i pull a 5th wheeler pretty often. after i left the dealer i went over a rr track and about lost control. the 70 pound tires where now on the front...and still 70 pounds. i adjusted the pressure back to 41 pounds but i still had a rough ride at high speeds. i took the truck to my normal tire dealer and he re-checked the balance and said all 4 tires were so far out of balance that he doubted the dealer even looked at them. he did the job and all is fine... the same dealer has also been doing almost all my oil changes. on the work order it said all fluid levels were okay and they filled my washer. upon my current trip to el paso from dallas it became time to change my oil again. the dealer down here was so crowded i decided to go to a quick oil change place. i told the guy i was gonna watch and if he had a problem with that i would go else where. he said fine with him. he changed the oil and filter had to remind him it hold 7 quarts when he checked the rear end he said he couldnt feel any fluids....i looked too and he was right just a little grease in the very bottom.. the is no indication of leaks and it appears that the access bolt has never been removed...i asked him to put some orange lock-tight on the bolt so i can catch the bastards next time.... moral of my story....take your truck to a reliable place of business these 5-star dealers are a bunch of thieves and liars and since the paperwork says they did the work who do you think dc is gonna believe when your engine transmission or rear end blows up... scott hendryx -- moparman----remove clothes to reply ok i went a little long on rotating my tires. they have 15k on them. before i rotated them there was no problem and a smooth ride but after rotating them it shakes the snot out of you between 60 and 70 mph. was it too late to rotate will it smooth out over time or should i put them back where they were and forget rotating them. p265 75r 15 criss cross rotation. thanks. .

bob peterson wrote the cummins in the dodge is a well-proven engine but of an eariler design generation. it isnt nearly as quiet as the powerstroke or duramax and doesnt meet the same pollution requirements as the other two. excuse me if it didnt meet the epa requirements then explain how come you can still get one btw an older design isnt automatically a worse design. the inline configuration provides a smoother running engine with less vibration flatter torque curve and easier maintenance. v configurations tend to produce higher horsepower not what you need to tow with unless you tow at full throttle/ max rpm at the cost of vibration and rougher running. budd .

low battery voltage. that could. you put in a new battery...ok...it could be low or your connections are not great and the pcm is reading lower than normal voltage. now...what *i* would do would be to drive for a few miles..go home shut if down pull the negative and positive cables make sure they are clean and brushed wait 15 minutes reconnect and make sure they are tight and snug and go again. if the light pops back on have it pulled out and you will know what is causing the light now.. bet the thing isnt backfiring now or slugish to start tho.. what would cause the check engine light to come on. i put a new battery in today and the light came on within 100ft of driving. john have a about my 1999 durango 5.9 slt. the other day the check engine light came on stopped by autozone and they read it out to be code 720- output speed sensor failure.. then it got very sluggish starting and then it just cranked but not firing. if you pushed the gas when cracking it would start and run but as soon as you left off the gas it would shut off. then i tried to crank it normally a few minutes later and it started fine. sorry confusing isnt it.... nope...batterys toast...get a new one and be ready for it to stumble for a couple of secs and then clear up... thanks in advance john .

tom brian and friends dont mean to flog a dead horse but it seems i have a related problem. it appears that oil or something is leaking out of the axle shaft housing and is actually dripping onto the knuckle and then the ground. i had noticed this area to be a bit oily a while ago but attributed it to grease dropping off the grease points after i lubricated it. now im thinking that it may have started after the dealer replaced the u-joint on that side. tom you had mentioned go slow and try and hold the axle as parallel inside the tube as you can. try not to let the end scrape the bottom of the tube - itll pick up all kinds of crap. align the end of the axle with the oil seal push it gently through the seal and turn it until the splines re-engage with the differential. is this oil seal what is leaking could i have damaged it further during my bumbling if so could you explain how to replace it if that is what is done in this situation sorry to bug you guys again on this. thanks. steve .

my uncle just traded in his suburban for a new chevy 2500 diesel... his suburban had 250k miles on it and didnt leak a drop. sure he was not towing with it. 250k on the original engine and trans and not leaking a drop thats pretty darn good. with so many reports of chevy being super reliable and so many reports of chevy not being reliable i guess its just hit and miss with them. i have yet to own a chevy. but with my old ford i owned it for two years and it fired right up every morning. same with my dakota. i have had it for three years now and every morning it fires right up. is the new auto trans in the cummins ram as good as the allison trans in the chevy sure that cummins is a great engine but its useless if you cant get that power to the ground. that is where dodge is lacking their transmissions dont last very long at all. do yourself a favor and go to the http//turbodieselregister.com/ you will find honest answers about the dodge with cummins. ive owned fords and now drive a 96 dodge cummins and it has been one of my favorite trucks. i just dont think you can beat the cummins for operating cost. the new 03 design dodge cummins is a much upgraded version with upgraded engine and transmission. actually a much different truck than my 96 and very nice. i really like the ford but would wait until the 6.0 problems are solved for sure! a friend has a 2002 chevy with the vortech gas engine that we just pulled a car trailor with and i personally think the truck is a piece of crap terrible gas milage doors creaked and my back is still hurting 3 days later! you can guess what i think of gm now! another friend who bought a chevy to pull car trailer with traded it in after experincing so much trouble with the vortech motor that he couldnt take it anymore under 40000 miles. he bought a ford and is happy now. if you are doing much towing take a hard look at the cummins. .
